The advice given by his father referred to a very common saying (at the time), "you don't know sh*t from Shineola" to indicate someone who was clueless. The cross eyed guy suing Martin was the film's director Carl Reiner, who early in his career was in a comedy duo with Mel Brooks. Then he created one of the biggest early TV shows, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and directed a number of Steve Martin movies. After playing Archie Bunker's son in law in All In The Family, his son Rob Reiner went on to direct many famous movies himself. That was Carl Reiner's wife, and director Rob Reiner's mother who said "I'll have what she's having." in When Harry Met Sally.

Something a lot of people don't realize... The definition of the word "jerk" changed for some reason, between the 1970s and the 1980s. Today, most people think of a jerk as an 'a-hole' or a very mean, rude, or inconsiderate person. But in the 70s and before, the word 'jerk' used to mean an 'idiot' or a buffoon. Once you know this, you'll notice them using it that way in a lot of old shows and movies before the 80s.

Back in the day, there was an old family television show by the name of Lassie. It was about a family who lived on a farm back in the mid 1950's and their adventures. The shows main character was a smart, protective Collie dog named Lassie. As a dog would normally do, Lassie would bark, and they would interpret what Information Lassie was trying to tell them... just like Steve Martin's character did in that scene. I'm sure they were trying to get a laugh off of that Lassie reference.😂😊

Lassie was my favorite show as a child. I watched it on reruns, of course. We always had a dog or two and whenever the dog would get excited and bark I would ask it questions, like, "Did someone fall down the well?" It cracked my siblings up and is still a reference they make today.

We went out to Blockbuster one night to pick some movies to watch at the cabin; my mom saw this one and got really excited, she loved Steve Martin and said we needed to watch it, she swore it was the funniest movie she'd ever seen. I was concerned about the R rating but she said it was rated R in a very different time and a lot has changed since then. It definitely still felt a bit weird to watch with my parents at times, but was still very funny and memorable. I think more than anything I just appreciated how much my parents enjoyed the movie and the specific jokes, which we all quoted for a long time. All in all it's just tied to a very positive memory and happy moment in my life, and I was not expecting it to show up here. Can't wait to watch along with you!!

My parents took me to see this movie in the theater when it came out. I was like 7 years old then, and it's still a movie I love whenever I see it. I still remember the commercial trailer for the movie. Navin (which is a Southern black way of saying "Nathan", so that was supposed to be his actual name) was on those steps where the movie started in his robe with his Thermos. He looks at the camera and states, "I'm not a bum. I'm a JERK!", and the trailer gives a little synopsis of the film. The cat juggling scene, and the scene where he keeps signing checks and drunkenly snarling, "One dollar, and nine CENTS!" followed by taking little knickknacks from the house were my favorite scenes. Fun fact: The cat juggling scene came from his stand-up comedy where he did a bit about cat juggling as a new, disgraceful practice that was emerging. His stand-up was funny as hell, so when you get a chance, check him out! As you might have guessed, his comedy style is also very visual, and he uses a lot of props. He also does funny comedy songs that he wrote, and he plays a mean banjo! *Edit* Oh! I'm also a visual artist (and musician as well), and I won first place in a Disney drawing contest for drawing Steve Martin with an arrow through his head when I was in 5th grade. The arrow-through-the-head was one of his stand-up comedy props.

Steve loves cats, and he'd work them into his standup comedian routines. One bit revolved around the fact that he discovered his cat was stealing money from him, and spending it all on cat toys, and my favorite was when he tell the audience that he gives his cat a bath regularly. Look up the HBO specials he did in the mid '70s.

"Jerk" didn't necessarily mean the same thing when I was a kid as it does now. When we saw this movie, it was understood that "jerk" meant someone who was "less than." It didn't have to have anything to do when them being mean or stupid. This was part of Steve's whole persona. He once did a TV special where he came out singing a song in front of huge letters that spelled out his name. Only they spelled out "STIVE." The joke was that he was such an amateur that he couldn't get his own name right on his own special, or something like that. Steve was a CHARACTER back then.

Some of my favorite movies starring him are "My Blue Heaven," "Roxane," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "Three Amigos," "LA Story," and "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid." Dead Men is unique as they took multiple old Film Noir movies (like those starring Humphrey Bogart) and cut the scenes into a new story, making a larger movie. I guess you'd kinda call it a parody or an omage (sp?) to the film genre.

I have loved Steve Martin ever since I first saw him. I saw him in a big country wide stand-up tour. He is amazing. The crossed-eyed man that launches the lawsuit against him is Carl Reiner, who also directed the film. Reiner had a legendary career. Steve had a successful career in entertainment behind the scenes, but he also was a pretty big name on the comedy circuit that included several appearances on SNL, Johnny Carson Show, and many others. He became well known for his famous comedy skits, "King Tut" and "Wild Crazy Guy" on the comedy circuit", but "The Jerk" is the film that launched his film career. Bernadette Peters was a star in her own right, with a musical background, as well. Steve and Bernadette met in 1976, and in 1977 they began a romantic relationship that would last for four years. The handful of films (including "The Jerk") they did together would follow. Love these two -- both independently and in the films they made together!
