This is the first song my big brother learned on the guitar. He was a hell of a good player, and a good man. He died a few weeks ago; all I have left of him are memories and music. Thank God for Hendrix, because he’s keeping the past alive for me.

The world lost Jimi Hendrix 50 years ago today. He was only 27 years old, his career just beginning with only just 4 years in the spotlight but accomplished tons. "Are You Experienced" (1967) Is one of the albums where heavy metal guitar began, the way he manipulated distortion, feedback & effects in general was pioneering AF. He went on to become one of the highest paid musicians of his time without knowing how to read a signal note of music. R.I.P

There won't ever be anything like Jimi Hendrix. Even if someone comes along with the technical abilities to play guitar like he did, the cat is out of the bag already. When this dude hit the scene, what he was doing probably sounded like something that came from outer space. He made the world feel something it didn't even know existed at the time.
@SuperKONR

He didn't have much technical ability, his playing was sloppy as hell. But nobody dared tell a black guy that he sucked in the late 60s. He came up with a great sound, that's for sure. But he wasn't a very good guitar player.

That drumming is actually insane. Mitch is all over the place, constantly doing erratic, unpredictable fills, yet it never sounds wrong. It's like he isn't drumming (as in keeping a beat) but rather playing the drums as if they were some solist instrument, complementing Hendrix perfectly.

It's a shame Jimi & Chandler couldn't have picked a real bass player for the band instead Noel was always holding his 'guitarist' candle whilst with the Exprience, but the three of them certainly jelled enough to give Jimi his space to 'do his thang' so to speak...!

For my money the greatest drumming performance in the history of recorded pop/rock music. He's barely playing a beat, it's all over the place, the whole way through, yet it's never too fussy or too flashy or too shambolic. It's not in the background, it's not a solid foundation, it's every bit as musical and lyrical as the guitar. Mitch Mitchell is man-of-the-match in this one, and for a Hendrix record that's a big ask. Very underrated

totally. ive been doing this song as part of my classic rock set for 15 years. drummers always play the dumbest straight beat with no fills no fun no nothing. they never memorize the changes they just play a beat off of cues they're just not into it. i really wish i could find serious players with passion. its a rare quality in musicians today. people say they can play but they barely understand what it is to be a "player". mitch was a monster he served jimi and his music like he should have like a real player with passion. that's why jimi chose him.

"Jimi Hendrix blazed through our lives like a fireball-supernova that most likely originated in a black hole in the middle of some uncharted universe. This was not just some Elvis or Beatle-everything about Hendrix was otherworldly. He had an understanding of sonics and how they related to music, which no human had ever conceived before. He was able to express these non-verbal expressions as blasts of feedback and warfare emulations; personal, unique grace notes that were apropos for the times in which he performed. Before his genius reached maturity (he died at age 27), all that was left were some blinking sparks in the tail of a once-in-a-lifetime comet. A true alien in his lifetime-now as an immortal-too much wasted effort is spent by others in trying to compartmentalize him." From Al Kooper

Well, he was that--but many geniuses have been junkies or started out as junkies (and did their best stuff as junkies)--then they come down and try to imitate what they'd done when they were off in some other universe. If they're lucky (and famous), they get some good back-up musicians who can do what they used to do, and they go out on the road and do a "come back." Others go back to being junkies and OD.

Mitch Mitchell came up as a jazz drummer, one of the main reasons that he was able to use the drums as a solo instrument in "conversation" with Noel and Jimi. He's always improvising interesting lines. He tells a story with the drums even as he melds them seemlessly into the mix with Hendrix, something most rock drummers simply don't have the chops or the imagination to do. If you notice, that's why Hendrix gives him so much space to play: Everything he does embellishes what Jimi is doing. He plays all around the beat, on top of the beat, double-time with the beat, etc., but all with subtelty and without being "loud" or seeming to "show off". He was one of the greatest rock drummers of all time.

Mitch Mitchell is one damn good drummer and probably the best. Noel was a good bassist, but Jimi was a guitar God. All 3 together, this is LEGENDARY!

Anthony Chu I always thought. Mitch was one of the greatest drummers but he was in Jimi's shadow, but he knew how to play with jimi, buddy miles was a good drummer but he lacked the free wheeling improvisation that Mitch knew how to do with jimi. Mitch was like a jimi on drums. Many people talk about zeppelins bonham who I think was also a great drummer, he like miles was a drummer. But Mitch had that artist feel like jimi on the guitar, it was more than banging on drums or keeping a beat.. manic Depression, voodoo chile slight return are the best example of his drumming

Absolutely, right up there with Baker, Bonham and Moon. Not many played with such a jazzy energy as he did.

Jimi's a great guitarist, but I love his lyrics and the way he sings too! Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell are great musicians too! 👍

He didn't really play a right handed guitar upside down, he restrung it. So the body was right handed but the strings were correct for left handed playing

When I first started playing drumset at age 13 I fell in love with Jimi and Mitch's playing which still blows me away with his vocabulary. Seemingly simple but so understated in how he creates variation after variation expanding the theme and taking it up a notch each time.
