I have seen comments regarding the length of OT and how it needs to be shortened, but games go to double OT and beyond rarely enough that I feel it would be a mistake to change the format now.

The Lightning/Bluejackets game was significant because Columbus had famously swept the Ning in the previous year. It took an epic battle to get the monkey off their backs. Started them on the 2 cups, 3 finals, and 11 series wins.

Hate to bring it up but it also got massive media attention(including news outlets that never talk sports)as the first set of post season games among the North American Sports Leagues after the COVID hiatus as well. Plus playing at a neutral site as well (watching it on TV starting in the 2nd OT)in Toronto with no fans made it maybe the most unique hockey game I ever saw. And I am no fan of either the Jackets or Bolts.

One of the reasons this OT was better played than most others was because both teams were coming off of long layoffs, so they were pretty rested. Much more so than if they had played a game two nights before. And there better not be any changes to playoff OT format. This is unique to the NHL, and the longer a game goes, the more memorable it becomes.

You speak from the heart when you talk about the 'Nucks. A forever fan you are. Your psychic ability to pull the negative from a PO OT game amazes me. I love the Canucks, like a puppy dog. They can be fun to watch and then they take a widdle on the floor. Could drive one crazy. The '87 game was surprisingly my first double OT+ game despite watching the game since '65. I have particular memory of it in that I went for supper right after the 3rd period ended and had a good meal with good company and when we came back, was quite surprised to watch the final period. Since then I have always watched all OT PO games to a conclusion. OT in the PO is the most exciting part of hockey. Never change it.

Few things. The ones that stand out for me are the Flyers over Pittsburgh and the Islanders over Washington in 1987. On that one, I fell asleep on the couch and when I woke up I thought it was a replay(the game was on USA and they used to replay the game at like 2am) only to find out it was still going on. I remember LaFontaine just putting it on net and beating Mason who just collapsed after the goal. The Flyers/Pens game, I was living in Arizona at the time and my wife and I went to dinner at Damon's where they had the game on. We finished and went home and kept on watching(I'm a huge Flyers fan). It's one of those rare time when I was living there where the game got done after midnight. And the goal that ended that one wasn't cheap. Primeau hit a stop, pop, and bang goal. The only other overtime game(other than the heartbreaking game 6 of the 2010 finals) was game 2 of the 1974 finals when Bobby Clarke scored on a rebound to finally get the winning in Boston monkey off the Flyers backs on our way to our first Cup.

Long OTs are the best part in my opinion. The Islanders/Capitals one was the first one I remember. I was 11 at the time and I was made to go to bed at the end of the 2nd overtime. When I got up the next morning, my mom (who got me into hockey), asked me to guess 3 things, who won, the player that scored, and the # of OT’s. I actually guessed correctly on the Islanders winning and Lafontaine scoring, and I missed on the OTs (I said 5 OTs instead of 4). I was so proud of myself.

The previous 14 games to go to at least 4 OT (so excluding last night), 12 of those 14 teams that won the marathon OT game went on to win that series. For the 54 previous games that went to at least 3 OT, 41 of the 54 winners of the long OT game went on to win the series. Winning an epic OT game gives you a huge mental boost. And Rod Brind'Amour said it best, you would rather lose in a blowout than in a long OT game. It will be interesting to see if Carolina can buck this trend, but the odds definitely are against them.

Mentioning Mt. St. Helen's, I always associate it with the Islander's first Stanley Cup win, because the mountain blew on Sunday and the Islanders won the Cup the following Saturday. In OT. I was a freshman geology student in college at the time, and we had different students volunteer to sit in the office to watch the USGS teletype (yeah, one of the old teletype machines) for news on the volcano, which we knew could blow any minute. Well, the one time nobody was watching was Sunday morning, which was when it blew, which shows what nature thinks about man's plans. Before the Pat Lafontaine game, the longest OT anyone could remember was Rangers vs. Blackhawks which Pete Stemkowski ended in the 3rd OT. I'd guess it was 1971. I listened to that game on the radio. No TV in NY because the game was at MSG. And the Rangers ended up losing the series.

My favorite moment was when Primeau won it for Philadelphia. He was hated in Philly being that he was traded for Brind’Amour and he flat out underperformed . Not to mention that we all knew why Brindy was traded (Cough, Lindros). That goal endeared Primeau to the fanbase. Honorable mention to Pat Lafontaine against the Caps, I still remember Doc Emmirick’s call and watching Mason’s stick slide down his blocker hand.

I was wired for the last two OT periods. It was fun watching Gretzky try and hang on through intermissions and post game as he was fighting off sleep. I'll definitely remember this one. I feel bad for the hockey snobs that said they wouldn't watch the rest of the season because only sunbelt teams are left. Watching Ryan Hartman's 2OT winner earlier this playoffs was a thrill. The season ended as a disappointment but staying up until 2AM to watch the end was a great memory. My personal favorite OT game as a Bolts fan is pretty obvious. I was maybe five when game six against the Flames happened so I don’t have to many memories of that, but when that five OT game happened it felt so different to anything I’ve ever seen. It was the first time in my time being a fan of the Bolts that it felt like we truly clutched. Sure we had OT winners before but whenever the Bolts won it was because they outplayed the other team, if they got down often the Bolts would fail to get back into the game or they would fail to sustain pressure, and in clutch situation 9/10 they failed. That game felt like I was watching a different team, and I was. The team that was born from that game and the team before it are two completely different squads if you catch my drift.

Honourable mention to the most thrilling overtime victory the Team Canada Gold Medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver! Edge of the seat hockey followed by the loudest screams, horns and cheers the city had ever heard!

I thought that was an incredibly weak goal and underwhelming end to a game of that calibre.

As a Kings fan watching the Kings beat the Rangers in double overtime of game 6 in the 2012 Finals was awesome! What a great way to win the Stanley Cup! Especially at home in front of your home crowd! 🎉

My favorite OT Playoff game was Colorado over Florida to secure the Stanley Cup. As a Colorado fan, out first cup will always be special, and that game made it even more special.

The OT game that sticks out to me was Dallas' win over Buffalo in I think it was game 6 cup final (don't remember the year I was young), it was one of the first times my dad let me stay up super late and watched Modano put in the game winner and Dallas lifting the cup.

I know it might not be a good memory for you, but game one of the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals between the Hawks and Bruins is my favorite long overtime game. My family had a viewing party with some friends, but the party was cut short due to a huge thunderstorm that caused a power outage at our house. Our friends only lived 3-4 minutes away, so we thought we could try to move the party to their house where they still had power from their generator. However as we were in the car trying to leave, a tree in our front yard blew down in our driveway and we couldn’t leave. The power at our house eventually came back on, but the tv signal was still bad from the storm. My family ended up watching a good portion of the game huddled around my sister’s laptop where she found a stream of the game. I just remember how crazy of a night that was and on top of that the game just so happened to go into triple overtime. The best part about it was the Hawks finally winning lol.

I was in college for the Islanders game. One of my roommates came in and saw the game and thought it was highlights. Nope. He left Long Island after the third period and drove to Massachusetts and the game was still on when he arrived.

My father stayed up to listen on the radio, to the Montreal Maroons vs Detroit Red Wings, six overtime game. The game ended at 2:30 A.M.! He was real hockey fan. He could tell stories about the rivalry between the Wings and the Canadians in the 1950's. The Canadians got so mad at losing in the finals to the Red Wings, they refused to shake hands with the Wings after the Wings won the Stanley from Montreal.

I'm from Europe and was thinking about watching game one between Florida and Carolina because I have may off days right now. But I was too tired from an exhausting last day at work. After I got up and saw what happened I thought well, I could've started breakfast during the rest of the OT(s). 😎

I seem to recall the Flyers/Pens 5OT game that I didn't have cable at the time, and ESPN stopped updating the website after 3OT. And I was not on the ball and didn't check a Canadian site. So I had to wait for morning to find out what happened.

The Kings obviously don’t know overtime. I’m a Stars fan and we definitely KNOW overtime. I remember 2003, 2007, and definitively Cinco de Morrow (2008, so named because the goal was actually scored on Cinco de Mayo, the 5th of May). Looking forward to our series starting tonight.

I always say “Overtimes and fans are like orgasms - more you bring them, the more likely they come back.” I remember college pals watching the Washington Marathon in 1987, filling the dorm lounge. And, they wanted to know what happened to the Islanders after that.

The thing is the Islanders were amazing in 1987. They came back to win that series in game 7 after being down 3-1 in the series. Then they fell down 3-1 to the stacked Flyers. But game back only to lose in game 7 against the Flyers. If the Islandrrs would have win that series I believe it would have been an Oilers vs Islanders 1984 rematch. Sadly, they lost. The Islanders an amazing franchise with a very storied resilient past. Something about that team.... an aura of positivity and a refusal to give up.
