The price of honor. The power of friendship. THE KARATE KID, Part II. Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita re-create the roles that brought them international acclaim in The Karate Kid. Karate student, Daniel Larusso (Macchio), accompanies his wise and whimsical teacher, Mr. Miyagi (Morita), to his ancestral home in Okinawa. For the boy, it's a journey to an exotic new world offering new clues to his mentor's secret past. For Miyagi, it's an opportunity to see his father one last time and tore kindle a romance with his childhood sweetheart (Nobu McCarthy). But Miyagi's return also re-ignites a bitter feud with long-time enemy, Sato (Danny Kamekona) - a feud that involves young Daniel in a brilliant collision of cultures and combat. Now, far away from the tournaments, the cheering crowds and the safety of home, Daniel will face his greatest challenge ever when teacher becomes student and the price of honor is life itself.

I met Ralph Macchio at a comic-con recently and was able to ask him about this scene, if it was filmed on location or in studio. He told me it was indeed filmed on location in Hawaii, they had massive rain machines and it was freezing cold out. He also said that for some of the intense winds, in the scene, they flew a helicopter just over top of them (something that you probably couldn't get away with today 😅). So awesome.

The problem is the uncle saw the error of his ways and redemption, and the nephew grew up trying to be what his uncle wanted. He did it to gain the approval and respect of a man he respected. When the uncle saw his error and redemption, the nephew saw it as betrayal. How could this man, who had raised him to be this way, that he had looked up to, emulated, and tried to gain that acknowledgement change, and suddenly he was cast aside, seen as lesser, that the actions he had done at the approval of the uncle were no longer approved? While it doesn't excuse the nephews behavior in the grand scheme of humanity, much of the blame is still laid on the uncle, and when the uncle saw his errors and redemption, didn't take blame and sit the nephew down and tell him he had to change, that he had been wrong, and taught him wrong, and that he would help show him the proper way to be a good man and a good human being, but instead cast him aside for him being exactly what he taught him to be.

You have to say this for Sato. When Miyagi raised his hand and Sato thought it was to finally kill him, the old man didn't blink. He was going to look Miyagi right in the eye as he was killed. Not even a flinch. Also - Chozen had a lot to live up to after this movie, and it has been an honor and a personal pleasure to live long enough to see him not only redeem himself, but thrive in spite who he was at this time in his life.

What I love most about this scene is it shows what matters most for being a true martial artist. It is not being the strongest or most skilled. It is about using what you have learned to conquer fear and danger itself. What Daniel lacked in strength and skill he made up for in sheer will, determination and selflessness. He never hesitated despite being skinny and clumsy. He was a true martial artist

After all, it's like what Mr. Miyagi said, when he & Daniel were walking to that old cannery: "It doesn't matter who's stronger. It matters who's SMARTER!!!" If that's the case, then he's wrongfully blaming himself. Sato's anger and hate were sincere, given that he honored the ice-break bet along with giving the villagers ownership of the village in exchange for Mr. Miyagi fighting him, "small price" or not. Chozen was just plain bad news and was just using Sato's emotions as an excuse to throw punches. Otherwise, he would've also honored the ice-break bet, along with not ripping off the villagers with their crops. He even claimed to have been 'dishonored' because of Daniel. All the wrong he's done and he claims to have had honor before.

Both comments are hysterical, but I believe that Mr. Miyagi was able to tap into something that Sato couldn’t simply because of how they lived: after the supposed betrayal when they were younger and still friends, Sato trained to fight Miyagi, where Miyagi spent that same time training NOT to fight. So, when the time came to take his skills to yet another level (in this case to rescue Sato), Mr. Miyagi was able to because he was doing it for the correct reasons. I think that’s why Miyagi initially looked so exhausted when he broke the beam; the place he went to was beyond just the physical realm, even if it was just for a moment, but it drained him just the same.

Id say more like Cowards at the time. Sato was a good man who lost his way and the true meaning of what he was taught. Miyagi's act restored it all for him. If he was truly bitter and inconsolable, then not even saving his life would change him, rather look at it as another opportunity to kill Miyagi. Then it woulda been cowardice the whole way. I would agree that Chozen couldve been considered a coward at the time because of how he was taught and knew little about true good.@@danaabel1049

What these 3 celebrities, Tamlyn Tomita, Traci Toguchi and Yuji Okumoto who reprised their Karate Kid 2 roles in Cobra Kai all have in common is that they're Japanese-Americans but the difference between them is their generations. Tamlyn Tomita who plays Kumiko is issei--first generation. She's from Okinawa, Japan, Traci Toguchi who plays Yuna was born in Hawaii and is nisei--second generation and Yuji Okumoto who plays Chozen was born in Los Angeles and is sansei--third generation.
