A clip from Celeste Headlee's TED Talk "10 ways to have a better conversation" from TEDxCreativeCoast 2015
When your job hinges on how well you talk to people, you learn a lot about how to have conversations -- and that most of us don't converse very well. Celeste Headlee has worked as a radio host for decades, and she knows the ingredients of a great conversation: Honesty, brevity, clarity and a healthy amount of listening. In this insightful talk, she shares useful rules for having better conversations.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more. You're welcome to link to or embed these videos, forward them to others and share these ideas with people you know.

Right?, but the speakers' (TED Speakers, plural possessive) sharing the background, stories is a way of engaging our minds to ensure that the point of the Talk is firmly engraved in the gray matter between our eustachian tubes. Mind you, to attend a TED Talk can run upwards of $3,000 per seat. Pay $6K for a couple, come in, and within 10 minutes and/or 10 bullet points, it's time to find the car in the parking lot? Wouldn't go over so well, right? $3,000 per person Audience of 5,000. $1.5M... for a 10-minute speech? Didn't think so, either.

That was inspiring. Sometimes I'm amazed by ignorance... but I appreciate the true meaning of that word. It is not meant to be a slander against anyone, it's simply an observation that someone is discussing a position that they can not possibly understand, And, you make me realize, that ignorance could be mine. Thank you for that!

Being nearly deaf, I don't have conversations anymore. They don't come with closed captions. I prefer text and at this point my verbal interactions with people are limited to exchanging essential information (masks hinder communication, by the way) and getting out of the situation that requires it as fast as possible to limit the frustration and disappointment that I always seem to feel when I'm going through the process. Thanks for your closed captioning, by the way.

I think that with many introverts there is a component of social-anxiety and shyness. These tips offer some good techniques to deal with this whole mix of issues. Firstly, in trying to be more inquisitive about others, someone with these extra issues can take the pressure off themselves to 'perform'. But adding the component of awareness of the present moment can allow the 'sufferer' to get lost in someone else's experience, rather than worry about how they plan to respond etc. And really, the more engaged one can be in someone else, the more likely the other party are to feel connected to us, perhaps bringing about a more relaxed and conducive experience by the time the attention gets focussed back on us.
