The grandpa was treated so badly bc of NOT CRYING When my grandma died, my mom was silent and frozen, I was screaming, my sister was crying, my other sister was calm, my dad was softly crying. We all had different reactions. Just because you don’t cry, doesn’t mean you are guilty.

i really love how in-depth eleanor goes when talking about jessies personality and relationships with her family. i feel that all too often a victim is almost just a number, but eleanor does an amazing job at humanising the people she talks about and letting their positive traits and the things they loved be the biggest part of the story

Honestly they should just issue Amber Alerts when a kid is missing period. That first 24 hours is the most crucial even if a kid hasn't been abducted. Sure they might not have started out as a kidnapping/murder but they could easily end up that way.

It’s worth noting that a lot of older men have difficulties expressing vulnerability. A lot of men and boys raised decades ago were raised to not cry or show emotion. I’ve known many older men who just straight up do not cry no matter what.

I lived 2 streets away from her. We went to the church across the street from my home a few nights before she disappeared. She was the most beautiful soul I have ever met. I had cancer as a child & she came to my house with the pastors daughter to give me a teddy bear, & I still have it to this day.

Gosh, I'm so in love with how Eleanor tells these cases. She isn't creepily obsessed with the killer or murders/kidnappings/whatever as someone would expect, and she's so kind and respectful. Plus she tells the stories so well, I can almost imagine knowing the victims, which just increases my empathy even more. Then there's the fact that these stories are being told at all. It makes me feel better knowing that people won't be forgotten, even if they're never found.

You’re so right about grief being different for everyone. When my father died I didn’t grieve straight away because my mum had cancer at the same time, was in treatment and I was also pregnant with my first child (I’d previously had 2 miscarriages).... I had to cope at the time so kept it all in. 2 years later when I got pregnant again and didn’t have the same stresses, I spiralled into a depression and grief. Therapist said it was delayed grief and I was only able to process it when I was in a safer/better place 2 years later ... people shouldn’t judge.

Thinking about that little girl’s last moments has always haunted me. Jessie, you deserved so much better, as all kids do.

Gotta love how when someone the police suspects fails a polygraph test, they often treat it like evidence (even tho it's not) but when someone they suspect passes the test they're like "well, anyways" and ignore it. Like...???

As someone was there searching for Jessie. I knew Jessie and this part of my life is the hardest thing I have ever had to endure. This was the first funeral I ever went to and I was there when we put her in the ground. I love Mark and always will ♡♡♡ I was at the house he was at the night his daughter went missing because he was seeing my girlfriends mother. When you live in a small town everybody knows everybody. As soon as I saw this document I started crying. I miss her and wonder what a beautiful person she would have been if John Couey didn't take her life. Keep her alive for days on end sexually abusing her just to bury her Alive. And then flee to Georgia. I love Mark and I will always love Jessie no matter how old I get I will always remember Jessie and our karaoke nights and pool nights I love you beautiful angel ♡♡♡♡♡

That poor father. He will feel guilt for the rest of his life, no doubt about it . But he's human and humans make mistakes - mistakes that to us would be miniscule but in this case it was catastrophic. 🥺

I keep thinking that if the police had immediately begun searching through sex offenders and neighbors they would have found Jessie alive. I am appalled by how the police handled this. I know they need to rule out the family, but there has to be a better way and detaining the grandfather in a physical way has to be illegal. I don't care that they had to look at it at all angles. They failed this family. I suspect it was because of their financial status. They weren't middle class enough. It infuriates me and breaks my heart for this innocent child and her family.

When my aunt passed away my grandpa started cleaning when there was ntn else to clean he went outside and started to tend to his chickens and picking up his yard .. every one mourns differently and it makes me mad on how they treated the grandpa

I didn't cry when my mom died. My sister was sobbing hysterically but I couldn't. We made the arrangements and then went home. The minute my key went into the lock it started. I had a breakdown in the living room. I've always been that way. My husband was in the military for 23 years and I couldn't cry except alone in the shower.. Some people are just like that. I didn't cry when I had my kids until the postpartum hormones hit. It's a personality quirk some people have and it shouldn't be considered a sign of guilt.

I love how Eleanor treats the people she talks about like actual people. Not just another victim, not just another number, a real human being with feelings and hobbies and passions and goals and dreams.

I feel absolutely heartbroken for Mark and his dad. They absolutely loved Jessie, I can only imagine the long term effects of not only losing her but being accused of harming her.

Case suggestion: Pamela Hastie. Unsolved murder of a teenage girl from my town (Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland) from the 80s. There was a man wrongly imprisoned for a long time but he was released so it's back to being unsolved. Peter Tobin's name has even been brought up (he was born here) although that's pretty far fetched.

Mark was the best father I have ever encountered. His relationship with Jessica was incredibly wholesome and I'm sure she had the best childhood before all of that happened.

This case really highlights how crucial it is to ask for a lawyer when being questioned by the cops. They will do whatever it takes to get a conviction. Doesn’t matter if your innocent or not

Also in Archies generation men didn't show emotion very much. Back in his day crying was a form of weakness. Men are the bread winners while women took care of kids. My father is 81yrs old and isnt a cryer. My father isn't very affectionate either. My oldest brother took his own life and my father didn't let one tear fall. My father never showed any type of emotions during our grief. Which I'm sure Archie is the same way.

There is a movie about Jessica's dad Mark becoming a child protection activist called Jessie's Dad. It's a beautiful and inspiring movie and I highly recommend it. He's a really good person. RIP Beautiful angel Jessie.

This is the first case I've ever watched that I physically am not able to finish. I am half way through the video, and just cannot bring myself to keep watching. The relationship Jessie had with her dad is the exact same relationship I had with my dad growing up. As a single father, he raised me (an only child) and took me to his work with him (also on construction sites) and my fondest childhood memories are playing in plaster and writing all over the walls (he would write measurements on the walls of houses they were building, and he would let me draw pictures before patching over them). To hear the treatment Mark and Archie endured genuinely brought me physical pain. I've stopped the video where he has just gone in to question his dad about Jessie, and I just can't watch. Eleanor, I have watched every other video you've ever posted and I'm sorry if I've let you down by not finishing this one. I'm going to go call my dad and tell him I love him.

I cried a lot, especially on the police treatment towards Archie and Mark. And at the purple dolphin. I have a purple bunny that my dad won in a claw machine when I was a baby. I still have it today, 24 years later. His nose is threadbare, his ears have pilling that won't come off, but I still love that bunny. Jessie deserved that. To still have that dolphin somewhere in her bedroom to remind her of her father's love.

I can't remember if I've commented on this video before, I do remember requesting this case specifically because its a case that is very close to home-- quite literally, it happened locally to where I was living. I happened to be around the same age as Jessica when it occurred so I was very young myself but hearing my parents talk about it was honestly traumatizing to me. I remember my grandmother taking me to a memorial for her and leaving gifts there. Its a shame to think that she'd be in her early to mid twenties right about now.

When I was in sixth grade my grandfather died, when I found out it literally felt like I wasn’t on earth. I just went completely numb and I didn’t hear a word my mother said afterwards. Apparently I cried however that was the last time I would cry over his death for that entire year, the year anniversary of his death was when I finally broke. His funeral was on my birthday and even then I didn’t cry. Ironically when I found out my maternal grandmother died I sobbed to the point that my eyes literally hurt because of how swollen they were. Grief is just crazy and impacts all of us differently.

I’ve met Mark a few years ago. He really does seem like a sweet genuine person. I also grew up in FL and hearing about this case while it was happening and watching the interviews on the news was heartbreaking. Looking forward to part 2 and “Jessie’s law”

So often, it seems like when the police don't like to admit that they don't have answers, they try to fit the evidence around their theory instead of fitting their theory around the evidence. Hearing about how much her father loved her is breaking my heart.

I've been listening to you for over a year now and how I missed it when you did this case is beyond me. I was living in FL when this happened not far from where it happened. This was the most heartbreaking case. Mark was a wonderful father. It broke everyone's hearts to watch this family go through hell after she disappeared. I can't begin to explain how much this particular case effected the area. It was so awful.

That's exactly why I really am obsessed w/ true crime and psychology bc it gives you such a broader perspective of situations. What I learnt from being a psychology major and watching over a 1000 true crime cases is that Anger is a given misery. You get it from your parents who get it from their parents and so on. It obviously also depends on people but thats the sad reality of many many cases.

I am so happy that you’re telling Jessica’s story. Her case was one of the first times I realized that the world isn’t such a safe place after all. I lived in Florida at the time and my parents followed this story and I think what happened to her made my parents want to move me out of the state. They wanted me to live in a safer place. I will never forget Jessica. And I will never forget the love her dad had for her.

I hope this man realises how perfect of a dad he was to this beautiful little girl I hope his mind finds peace and he doesn’t feel like it’s his fault

When my grandpa died, my dad was crying, my grandma was sobbing loudly, my mum and brother were sniffling and crying and I wasn't able to cry. Everyone has different reactions when it comes to grief and the fact that police officers couldn't even figure that out is just disappointing.

The "afraid of dark... Her age and people that are 22"- I took it personally. It pains so much more when you explain all those details... Children should never be hurt! Ever! I can't imagine how the father felt, how his heart must've dropped. I'm so sorry for him.

It's really upsetting how the police handled the interrogation and questioning of Mark and Archie. I understand that usually in cases like this, they have to look to the family first. But the police went way too hard trying to coerce them into confessing for nothing. It's like they were so fixated on them that they didn't even want to entertain the idea of someone else being a suspect, which is very irresponsible on their part.

The police interrogations were LITERALLY torture. I am so upset for her dad and his dad. That’s so messed up. My heart is broken over this case. The police need to be heavily disciplined for how they handled this case.

I haven't even heard the full case yet, but you just KILLED ME AND MY EMOTIONS about the "I love you this much nothing can come between us" 😭😭 My dad passed away and, I miss my daddy every single day, and hearing that struck a nerve cause we use to spread out arms and say "I love you this much and all the way around". Always trying to show off to the other how far our arms can go, and arguing saying "nooo I love you so much more". Life is to short, love your loved ones, don't ever be to busy, always make time, and definitely make sure they know they are loved and cared for.

Fun fact, telling a suspect false information to get a confession is legal. It's used only if they 100% believe that there is no one else that could have committed the crime, they can use false information to get a confession. It can't be used in court obviously but all they needed was a confession. They need good evidence to do so of course but still. 100% legal as messed up as that is.

what i appreciate so much about eleanor's coverage is her deep respect for the family members. i know so many individuals that would dramatise the suspicion of the family members to create a 'plot twist' for dramas sake, but eleanor makes it clear from the very beginning the reality of the situation. mad respect in a climate that turns true crime documentaries into crime-dramas for entertainment.

As a daughter who is the closest with her dad, this hurt. I just know that his reaction would be very similar to my dads. This case is so sad. I hope their family finds peace someday.

Note: police can legally lie to You. They can tell you they found unicorn tears and dragon poop. If they arrest you lawyer up immediatelly and don't say another word.
