According to singer Ian McCulloch, who wrote the lyrics: "The Killing Moon' is more than just a song. It's a psalm, almost hymnal. It's about everything, from birth to death to eternity and God - whatever that is - and the eternal battle between fate and the human will." "The Killing Moon was nothing less than a gift from God. One morning, I just sat bolt upright in bed with this line in my head: 'Fate up against your will. Through the thick and thin. He will wait until you give yourself to him.' You don’t dream things like that and remember them, that's why I've always half credited the lyric to God. It's never happened before or since." My feeling is that it may not be quite as dark (in intent) as it seems, although it's completely understandable that a new listener may take it that way given the tone of the music. 😉 Love that you've given these guys (& Killing Joke) a shot recently, may I suggest "Lips Like Sugar" or "Nothing Ever Lasts Forever" next. If you're digging 80s synth then perhaps 'Vienna" by Ultravox would be a good listen?

This is a song about mortality. The "him" that he is referring to is the Grim Reaper.

Love this song, probably my favorite Echo and the Bunnymen's song. That whole album, Ocean Rain, is really very good. This song also featured in the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

Killing Moon may be an Echo goth fan-favorite, but I'd suggest more sensuous cuts to introduce this beautiful band: "Lips Like Sugar", "Bring On the Dancing Horses"...

Goods review! New wave/post punk. You are right on the voice usage on the songs. Popular in the '80s and '90s. The Halloween feeling is because this band was somewhat dark. Darkwave, post punk, Gothic. Goths and punks loved this band. Similar to The Cure. You have good sense. Listen to "The Cutter" from Echo and the Bunnymen.

Your(each person listening) own interpretation of "God", at least.

@@DefinitelyNotBender oh yes, hence why I used "suggest". One person's god is another's . . . .
@DefinitelyNotBender8 ай бұрын
@@KevinPugh-hq8rc also it can be interpreted that he's speaking to himself but in first person(It's always how I viewed the song. Different perspectives). Which, some people believe themselves to be their own God or that God is within them as much as outside of their bodies. "As Above, So Below. As Within, so Without. As the Universe, So the Soul."🙏🏼🤘🏼 Even early Jews and Christians had this belief. Some of it even found it's way into the Bible. I think it's "As in Heaven, so on Earth" when talking about Eden and 2nd Eden at the end of Revelation. Eden was a state of being and a state of mind before it was a place in the book of Genesis. Reached through accession through a blend of Christ Consciousness and Luciferian Consciousness. An inner duality and balance. Like Yin Yang in Eastern cultures. Both were also polytheistic before becoming monotheistic. Rome screwed all that up when they wrote the Bible, created the Devil(called him Lucifer for confusion) and the AntiChrist(Jesus) and took spirituality completely out of both religions and replaced it with politics.

Oh, I recall from a while back, the song was essentially Ian multiplying the feeling of being punished by his dad. Yes, pedestrian events can be elevated into poetry and song :)

I can't tell if this song was was predicated towards being reviewed as amoral judgement towards the video or the song as a whole, because one doesn't have to necessarily coincide with the other. But thanks for reviewing it anyways

Echo and the Bunnymen are absolute Legends🤘🏼 I don't know how I missed this when it dropped 🫠 Also, "Give yourself to him" isn't about another person. It's about giving yourself to yourself. He's speaking in first person to himself. You're throwing postmodern thinking into this and that's why you're confused. Try to not to think of it in some crazy "feminist" bs way.
