I’m always a strong backer of hybrid bikes, specifically rigid fork fitness hybrids, even *more* specifically the trek fx line! In the past I lamented that trek was moving towards gravel with their fx’s, but having ridden my own fx on poorly kept park pathways and small stretches of rooted paths, I applaud trek for bringing the gravel world to the flat barred preferrers. These bikes seem destined for this sort of thing in their ethos to be reliable and versatile! (Apologies for the lengthy declaration of love for hybrids)

I'm new to all this....what is a rigid fork? I just bought a bike with rigid aluminum forks but I'm not sure what that means exactly. Does it mean they're strong forks like steel forks?

@@Joseph-gg8if good question, maybe the Trek store would know. It may mean there is no shock mechanism in the fork like their pre-2023 Dual Sport bikes?

That's the one thing i wishwe could somehow figure out is to lighten up the lower end bikes. The weight of a bike is a big deterrent which is all mostly subconscious. More people would ride and ride longer if they didn't have a 30+ pound bike to pedal

You’re still a youngster…I’m 64, near 65. I test rode a FX Sport 5 at Trek today, and I actually paid for it., but left it at the shop since I had limited time. Later in the day I returned to take closer look at the bike, and I found several deep nicks in the paint, down to the carbon. They said they would comp me or order a new 5, so I headed home to think about it…then I looked at the YT vid’s and Internet at the 6. So now I’m thinking of switching to the 6 since the carbon wheels and tubeless tires are included. I was hoping $1,500 was my top limit…you know how that goes! Do you regret buying the 6?
@jimmansi9046

@@rays9033 I don’t regret buying it but I do find it very hard to climb hills due to the relaxed geometry, that’s my only gripe & on the TREK forums. Dang. I love this redesign of the FX 6. Even nicer than my 2020 model FX 6! The 1x drivetrain makes so much more sense for those of us who ride on a variety of surfaces and are not KOM candidates. It's amazing that they've added carbon wheels without jacking up the price a grand or so. Still one problem with this and so many of the 'gravel' bikes, they just don't have low enough gears for the kind of climbing I have to do in western VA. A 1 to 1 lowest gear ratio just doesn't cut it. I have modified my FX 6 drivetrain by installing a SRAM Rival AXS with a 10-52 cassette and a 40t up front, giving me a .77 to 1 lowest gear ratio, and electronic shifting is just incredible.

@@MrWelfarehater You gotta understand, that I am 71 years old and speed is not my thing. On a flat road without a wind factor I do about 14-15 mph. I went with a hybrid because I really don't feel comfortable in the drop position. I did add aerobars and find that to be an extremely comfortable position for long stretches of riding. The other thing I like about my flat bars is that when I am riding downhill, especially on gravel, I feel I have more control that I would with drops.

I miss the 105 drivetrain. Have a 2022 the carbon wheels are nice but miss the 2x possibilities and this GRX level is not that good, not as good as 105. This is how they kept the price down. It's like Tiagra or even Sora it doesn't shift great. The range also isn't great and coming from 2x gravel and road bikes it shows. You don't have to want to be KOM. You just to want to be able to go faster on descents and be able to carry a load on LONG steep uphills.
@Robert-ce2bj
@Robert-ce2bj Жыл бұрын
Not sure if this was mentioned in other comments below but this model is supposed to come with GRX cranks and Shimano brakes. Due to the parts shortage this bike is coming with lower components but they have not lowered the price. I was really interested in the 5 or 6 but I'm leaning toward the FX Sport 4 now. The 4 has a 1x10 as opposed to the 1x11 of the 5 or 6 but the 4 actually has a better gear ratio for climbing.

Just an FYI, if you use a rack system that touches the frame at all you will rub that matte paint job into a gloss like finish at the rack interface with the frame, learned this the hard way on my Spec Diverge. Best bet is to use a rack system that locks around the wheels.

Am loving my Emonda SLR but the problem with that bike is that it's very stiff and very FAST so longer rides it starts to be uncomfortable and you want to GO GO GO all the time making it a drag in outings with slower riders. Wanted a more comfortable bike but didn't want to spring the money for a Domane carbon while still enjoying that nice ride wow the FX 6 is amazing. It's not super fast, you won't pass anyone in a real deal carbon road bike unless they're way out of shape as the upright position is not aero and as all flat bar bikes are speed limited, you hit a wall around 20mph tops. But for pleasant cruising or VERY long rides, am talking like more than a century, even 200 miles this is a perfect rig. I changed tires to 32mm for both of ours (me and wife) as I already have dedicated gravel bikes. A wonderful city commuter and cruiser that grinds miles away efforlessly and easily. Not for the Tour de Francy fast group rides for sure, but for those enjoyable and epic ones by yourself or with slower riders to feel the miles melt away as you take in the scenery.

What an absolutely gorgeous looking bike. It's taken me a year to finally admit that I've never really felt comfortable on my drop bar Orbea gravel bike so I'm going to be selling and hopefully getting one of these instead - I had a flatbar hybrid before the Orbea and I absolutely loved riding that thing. It's just a shame this bike has skewers instead of a thru axel, quite a baffling decision by Trek considering the price. Me personally I'd swap out those grips and look at changing the stem as well, may even look at getting a wider carbon bar.

I'm still annoyed Trek puts the isogrips on their FX Sports Line. They're cheap and breakdown rapidly compared to other grips that Bontrager makes. I replaced mine with SQLabs a year ago with no sign of deterioration. They're way more comfortable, more ergonomic and have far superior grip/control on rough surfaces (like gravel). That's interesting how much weight difference there is between the FX 5 and 6 (almost 3.5 pounds). I put a set of lightweight climbing wheels on my 2021 FX 6 and saw a weight reduction of 2 pounds. Using that as a baseline, I wonder if the FX 5 has a heavier frame than the 6? I'm concerned with the more upright Geometry on the 2022 models, I wonder how they'll handle technical gravel trails? Uneven weight distribution front to back can get you in trouble real quick on punching climbs paired with sharp, slick turns. For those thinking I'm picky, I average 21 mph on my FX 6.

Got road bike, got (aging and heavy) MTB but looking for a light weight bike to just jump on without having to go full spandex kit so the Specialized Sirrus 5 and this seem to be a good option plus cover the occasional gravel ride. The Specialized offers a 12 speed 11-51 and Praxis 68-0201B threaded bottom bracket which I suppose is less prone to squeaking compared to the Shimano press fit on this Trek. That being said, it appears the Trek offers all Shimano kit and carbon wheels vs alloys on the Sirrus 5. So Trek looks like a better value but I've always gone Specialized for the way they always seem to handle quicker (over steer) whilst the Treks IMO seem to track better (under steer) which I may prefer for this application but have not been able to locate either of these to try so far.

There's no need. The carbon frame and gravel tires are SUPER compliant it's almost like having full suspension. One slight upgrade would be a carbon seatpost, followed by a carbon bar or even one of those bushing stems but this bike doesn't really need it. I got carbon seatposts and bars just because. They make a small but discernible difference. However the ride is fantastic even on bumpy roads. You hit potholes, jarring terrain and can hardly tell. It's almost like having a steel or full suspension MTB. You gotta try this bike to believe it, it's *THAT* comfortable.

I'm not judging purely on weight, but yes that was surprising. The value to performance is just impressive. 1x GRX drivetrain, carbon wheels, and clearance for 42c tires are all real impressive for a $2600 bike. Considering that's $700 less than the SL5 it's impressive. Of course if you were truly doing gravel and bikepacking the Checkpoint is a better option. If you could afford to spring $1200 more on a nice set of wheels it would be loads lighter and nicer than the FX Sport 6. But you would also be nearly 2k more into the bike and for roughly doubling the price it should be way nicer.

The GRX is the correct crank listed in the specs for the 2022 FX Sport 6. Due to supply issues they are trying to get by with no name crank an brake component substitution from the sport 4.

Definitely. If you want drop bar start with the Checkpoint. Adding drop bar & levers is expensive, plus your frame fit/geometry will never be quite as dialed as starting with a purpose built drop bar.

Because of supply shortage Trek is substituting no name cranks and brake components from the sport 4. I ordered the sport 6, and went to pick it up. It had the substituted parts. @@sigmanu1042 my Promax brake line popped off at lever spewing clear reddish oil everywhere. Other brake lever was touching grip. I mention that I knew a person that had his bike brakes, seat, crank brought up to spec. The local Trek shop contacted Trek and sent the Shimano mt201 parts under warranty repair. I think my seat is a bontrager commuter seat. I will try to look at a the saddle the bike was spec with if any better. And will just say the cheaper substituted saddle is unsatisfactory.

Interesting model. Didn't know FX 6 existed. Good choice on cable routing to prevent paint wear from cable rubbing. But the paint, crankset and OMG pedals from Schwinn walmart bikes. These just dont belong on a $2500 bike. Same goes for paint, straight out of Walmart Viathon bike color.

James has got it all wrong. I had a trek 2019/20 Fx 5 model and it was certainly a fantastic bike: fast, aggressive and responsive, a pure pleasure to ride. It got smashed so I got the 2022 model thinking it would be identical to 2019/20. What a huge disappointment to waste all that cash on the pile of junk that has been sitting in my garage now unused for months; I'm able to get far more out of my 10 year old BMC Alpen Challenge AC02; a X 3 drivetrain that cost me around 700 dollars US. The geometry on this FX 2022 is terrible and the X1 drivetrain everyone is raving about is clunky, cumbersome and lacking in range both on climbs and the down hills. I felt I had to write this as a warning to any unsuspecting folk who listen to James' and read all these crank positive reviews and actually believe them and then end up wasting their money by buying one.
@Jamesthebikeguy
@Jamesthebikeguy Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you bought the wrong bike, not that this one is bad. A 2019 FX 5 is a totally different bike than this. As discussed this one goes to a 1x drivetrain and wide tires. If you were wanting a flat bar road bike like the previous model you should have brought that type of bike. For the vast majority of riders looking for a high-end hybrid, this is way better than the previous generation. For people like yourself that clearly prefer a road bike, but wanted a flat handlebar, you're right, this is not an improvement, because it's no longer that type of bike.

I thought the FX designation for Trek was meant to be there fitness oriented models that is 90 percent tarmac and the occasional venture onto light gravel tracks. The tyres on this bike is a deal breaker. 40mm as original manufacter equipment spells out they wanted a flat tracker for gravel. Even their Aluminium range is more faithful to it's FX moniker. Apart from the fact that the FX3 is rather Porky for what it is. But at least it has 32mm tyres as Standard. Anyway trek I will give the FX sport a miss
