*Todd* been watching & liking your work for well over a year, I just never comment.! I'll just say this.... as a former { long time ago }, working musician and a DJ, you really are the gold standard for how music reactions *SHOULD BE DONE* .! Having viewed probably a hundred or more reaction channels over the past 3 years there are 2 I feel so justice to the medium, and your one of them.! You don't need me to tell you that but it's so rare I kind of felt compelled to speak up.! Bravo young Turk.! My opinion, change nothing about how you orchestrate these, your already in the zone my friend.! Shoutout to Bakersfield voice....David .....

The Kinks were a major influencer to UK music in the 60s along with the Who and Small Faces. So many bands leaned their craft from these legends.

Totally agree. 1963-69 Was an amazing time in London. So much talent and creativity concentrated in such a brief time. The Kinks, Yardbirds, Who, Animals, and especially for me - Small Faces. I still listen and love them.

Waterloo sunset, often voted Britain's best pop song of all time. The kinks didn't do well in the USA because they refused to stop singing about British things, but many US singers quote the kinks as huge influences. Waterloo sunset, a picture if London, outside Waterloo train station.

Also, the American Federation of Musicians union had the power to withhold work permits for British musicians if they misbehaved on stage or refused to perform without good reason. The Kinks did some of that and got banned. Google "This is why The Kinks were banned from the United States".

A gorgeous song I'm happy to see reach a new audience.. I miss playing this one too. Next, "A Rock and Roll Fantasy"? Later, a conversation it seems between vocalist Ray Davies(pron. Davis) and lead guitarist, perfect vocal foil brother Dave on the question of perhaps finally hanging it up. It didn't happen right away, anyway, thank heavens, gods, whoever, whatever. ;'>D

I absolutely loved the Kinks and Ray Davies' voice - and this song is beautiful. Thanks for covering it! ❤ As for your comments on not needing to be 'perfect' live, that's absolutely spot on. And applies to all art forms, I think, as we're humans, not machines, and art expresses human experience - which is messy! It's the authenticity that matters. It can still be skilful, but doesn't need to be 'note-perfect' at all.

Never heard this live version -- but it's pretty true to the studio vibe and sound. Studio version's a bit cleaner but l won't say "Dammit Chod you should do the studio version!" coz that's not the case here. Anyway, the Kinks have a pretty versatile catalog of songs. Ray Davies was a master songwriter. When you say, "just get up there and be you" -- that's precisely what you get from the Kinks, on good days and bad ones.

Sir Raymond Davies is a real master and can do literally any style of music. The Kinks were a great live band and were amazing performers. Vastly underrated by the public but universally respected in the industry and a major influence on modern music and many famous musicians. The list of other major artists who have covered their songs is truly astonishing and much too long to catalog here. The prototypical Kinks guitar riff is ubiquitous in modern music. Thank you for your reaction.

This is a fine performance but the studio version is perfection itself. It's #42 on the Rolling Stone list of top 500 greatest songs. From Wikipedia: Pop music journalist Robert Christgau has called the song "the most beautiful song in the English language". Pete Townshend of the Who has called it "divine" and "a masterpiece". AllMusic senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine concurred, citing it as "possibly the most beautiful song of the rock and roll era". I think it's the best song Ray Davies ever wrote, so contemplative, you have to wonder what the singer is thinking as he stares out at the world from his window. Such a beautiful melody too. I've heard it said that it should replace the UK national anthem. Give a listen to the studio version.

This is a lovely song. It's a celebration of what I think was then a less fashionable area of London (South of the river) and an ordinary young couple, Terry and Julie, that he sees outside his window. After moving on from early rockers like _You Really Got Me_ Ray Davies did a lot of songs like this, character vignettes and observations of the world around him. Check out _Dedicated Follower of Fashion,_ about the more fashionable side of Swinging London. Also, _Dead End Street_ and _Sunny Afternoon._

Hi Chod! There's not so much a deep meaning here, it's more a nostalgic song about Waterloo in London. There is the train station and then the Waterloo Bridge that eventually leads you to Covent Garden Market. So this is about someone who likes to watch everyone moving about from his window, he sees a romantic couple but his desire is just to observe what is going on around him and the sunset over Waterloo Bridge. It was one of the songs that was featured in the London Olympics Open Ceremony in 2012.

This is Ray Davies we're talking about; he ain't no McCartney-esque ear candy pablum pushing hack. There IS a deeper meaning here, and it's implicit in the song title. He's using the unreliable narrator device, as he does in other songs, e.g. 'David Watts'.

Go away and write the perfect pop song - The Kinks we give you "Waterloo Sunset" - and the world says thank you. To me it's just amazing. Waterloo Station/Bridge are in London right at the river Thames. It's a story about watching the world go by from your window but not wanting to get involved. He does nothing but the world still carries on just like the dirty old river.

Ray Davies clearly didn’t trust his falsetto in the bridges i.e “”But I don’t need no friends,” “But I don’t feel afraid” and “But they don’t need no friends.” The recorded version has him singing “need” and “feel” as a high note, which he avoids in this live version. Shame really.

Ray Davies has debunked this popular theory in interviews, it's not based on those actors. He actually had his sister and her boyfriend in mind as the characters, and also used his memories of walking by a river with his first wife. Ray always loved playing in Liverpool during the Merseybeat era, and felt an affinity with the city and it's people. The original title for the song was 'Liverpool sunset', which he later changed and made the song fit his own experiences closer to his home in London.
