I got “Kevin” the Kyosho Pegasus rebuilt and it looks pretty good. A new body and one or two new parts and it is all cleaned up and back together! I really enjoyed the whole process of the rebuild and I hope you all like the results!
You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

Always nice to see a well used vintage rc get restored. The Pegasus looks great all cleaned up with that brand new body and decals. Good idea to leave the old tires alone too.. they do tend to break apart if you try to get them off the wheels. Enjoy running this gently on the lawn.👍😊

Thanks you!! I enjoyed getting all cleaned up and back in good working order, it is a very stratifying thing, you know. Those wheels are good at cracking and stripping screws out just putting them together new so I did not want to risk pulling them all apart and tempting fate getting them back together. I just had a bad feeling one of them is going to break and I will have to glue thing together or get a new set.

Yeah, they do get to a point where the parts are just too worn to work well, especially the drive shafts in it. Overall this one was very well taken care of and not beat up at all. Great job there Addam! I love to see a true vintage given a new lease of life. Nice to keep as much of the original car as possible, hence keeping its history intact. I only vaguely remember this car from back in the day, don't see many about these days for sure. I find a rebuild /resto far more rewarding than doing a new build, such a great sense of achievement when you get to see the transformation /final product! Superb. 👌 👍 👍 👍 👍

Thank you!! I really had a good time tearing it all down, cleaning it all up and getting back in good running shape! You are right, it is very rewarding and satisfying to give one another life! It is not the most sought after and cool buggy out there but it is nice a quirky with some very unique features I love. Those "living hinge" parts of the suspension just seem like the worst idea ever but actually work rather well! It is stuff like that I really enjoy about some of these old ones is seeing the cool and sometimes bad ideas they were coming up with back then since everyone was trying to make their own mark and way back in the golden era of RC!
@yodadarksideGreenHawksRC

@@AddamsPlayground Oh for sure mate! The thing I love about those proper vintage cars from the mid eighties is the fact that there was so much variation in the designs. Like you say, the hobby was realistically still in its early stages, manufacturers were trying so many different ideas/engineering concepts. There were some real quirky designs, some good, some bad. It's very interesting since getting back into the hobby 35 years on to see what designs have stood the test of time, and are still visible on the modern releases of today! I loved my porsche 959 back in 1987,and thought it was the best piece of engineering ever.... but since restoring a few in the last few years it's obvious 'now' that much of the design was inherently flawed, with some serious weaknesses. But, after building a more recent TTO2 Chassis it's clear to see much its routes originate from the eighties 959 chassis..... the basic concept of that more modern chassis is an evolution of the 959, except with the weakness's addressed and the concept tweeked as a result of what has been learnt over the years. Hopefully the plastics won't be too brittle on that Kyosho, and you will be able to have a casual drive or two with her..... as I doubt it will be easy getting replacement parts should anything break! Anyway bud, keep up the great content.... your channel is of great interest and never dissapoints us vintage crew! 😉 👍 👍 👍 👍

I was worried about them but the plastic seems to be some sort of miracle plastic! The front were very rigid and stiff but after some hot tap water and flexing them all the up and all the way down about a dozen times they felt great. They will go white when you flex them, that is normal so don't worry about that. Once they cooled off they were still as flexible so I was very happy with that! The new body really makes all the difference! It is very satisfying to bring them back for a second chance!

Thank you Dom! I really enjoy breathing new life back into these old ones and getting them back in good running order. This one was one of their low-end, entry level ones from back in mid to late 80s and I don't think they were a huge hit. Most of them got pretty destroyed over the years and are getting harder and herder to find in decent shape. They had the Pegasus, the Icarus and the Cosmo all based on the same chassis as well as the Cox Bandido was made from the same chassis and I am pretty sure there is another oddball out there on this chassis too but I may be mistaken. I am glad you enjoyed it!

Not much to it! Just strip it all down to a big pile of parts and hardware and then a lot of cleaning and scrubbing the plastics and a good degreasing of all the hardware is the hard part. Then it is just reassembling it all carefully to get the screws back in the original threads cut in the plastic and not overtightening things. Of course a new body shell and stickers make a world of difference to it as well. It sounds tedious and annoying but I find it very satisfying and rewarding to take a dirty old beat up car and bring it back to life again! Even if you can't get a new body you can sand and polish up some scuffs and scrapes in the Lexan shell and make it look newer as well. I have a Duratrax Evader ST I just got a few weeks ago I am going to work on sometime soon(ish) and get that back to 100% so maybe then you will rip into yours! Take care my friend! BTW, I know you were sending something my way, did that get sent because I never got it?

Thank you! I do not like greasing external parts like the hinge pins and drive cups like they recommend in the Tamiya manuals. It just attracts dirt and grit the it and then it turns into a grinding paste and not a lubricant! I use the Muck Off brand dry lube and the one (4oz ?) bottle will last a lifetime for me. It flows into joints and seeps into areas as the liquid but dries to a lubricating film after a day. The cool side affect is it smells like bananas so that always amuses me! The stubborn electronics got ditched as I spent way too much time trying to figure it out and I have no idea why they did not seem to want to work. At least now I know it will be reliable and not do anything crazy while driving it !

I thought of trying to whiten them with peroxide or painting them but either way I really need to take the wheels apart and that is part I am worries about. I know how easily it is the break the wheels at the screw locations and don't want to risk it! They is a good chance everything will go well but there is also the chance I break one and have to find a new set. Safer to leave them alone I think and if I find a set for a good price then I will grab them but otherwise I figure best left alone and just run em!

@@AddamsPlayground An old trick I'm sure you know..... Vaseline the tire (a liberal amount) as close to the wheel (bead) as you can (after cleaning & drying obviously) then prime, then paint. Wait till the paint is dry (give it a week) and wipe off the Vaseline.

The car looks great!! I had this car when I was 12 and loved it. Just started to rebuild one I found on Ebay and can't wait to gently run it around the track again. I don't suppose you have dimensions of the rear wheel spacers?? These were the only thing missing when I got it so I'll need to 3D print a set. Without them the tires just spin on the rims.

Great job Addam, could the wheels be sprayed with white or chrome effect paint?
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I probably could paint them white and they would hold up fine. I was going to try and use the peroxide whitening on them but I do not want to take them apart and risk breaking one. They are not the greatest plastics and are easily cracked. so not matter what I would do there is a chance of breaking them. I will get over the fact they look so yellow but I do check for any popping up on eBay fairly often at a good price! If I find a set I will snag them! If not then it was meant to be a runner and will get dinged up here and there so it is not critical it looks perfect now as it will get some running scars on it soon enough!

Well done, now the rims look a little yellow, why not try to turn white using peroxide.....?

The wheels are 3 piece ones and are very prone to cracking and breaking after they are this old. They were prone to cracking new if you did not tighten them down properly. You have to go around them a little at a time on each screw when doing it. I did not want to run the risk of taking them apart and putting them back together. I just have a very bad feeling it is not going to go well! I thought about it a lot, believe me!!
