The LAG PARADIGM. Better concept for INSTANT RESULTS!

In this video I discuss how to create lag in the golf swing. The ‘Lag Paradigm’ consists for most of trying to forcefully “hold on” to your lag as you transition. This concept is problematic.
It leads to excessive tension in the shoulders, elbows and wrists which ironically is what causes an early release more than anything else!
Creating lag requires a golfer to
increase the speed of their ARMS in transition. Most golfers conflate maintaining angles in the trail elbow with maintaining angles in the trail wrist. The trail arm should naturally extend as the club transitions and the arms drop. This in turn maintains the angle in the trail wrist ‘dynamically’ to create lag!
Remember the best players in the
workd drop their arms twice as fast and twice as far in transition than recreational golfers!
Enjoy the video and start creating LAG in your golf swing today!
Best,
Coach A.

Andrew this is seriously the best explained sequence of a golf swing I've ever used. I've been searching for a very long time how to smoothly sequence my swing correctly for me. Just spinning out too quickly & crazy upper body turn is such a swing killer. Getting my arms down 1st in my sequence has transformed my swing & ball striking. I just concentrate on a feeling that my trail shoulder stays back & pretty stationary in the downswing process. This just has so many good things for my swing speed & rhythm & has completely eliminated my weak fading Driver. Also i must mention that your Short Video 'Simply stamp your foot into the ground' to begin your downswing is an essential part of starting this downswing sequence with the arms. That drill is so easy to do yet so important for me. It has made my swing feel incredibly effortless yet i know i must be swinging correctly due to my ball striking & distances. I can now easily feel the pure clubface strike in my hands in most of my shots again. This video is so good & so clear & so right in explaining the mechanism of the golf swing. Thank you very much for your knowledge & understanding of the golf swing.

Andrew is absolutely spot on… KZfaq university offers a lot of “body swings“ and it is hurting way more golfers than helping. Andrew explains this beautifully. This is what the late great Manuel de la Torre talked about. In 20+ years of teaching, my experience finds that people’s bodies respond to the task of swinging the club with arms. Teachers Ned to create the proper visual for their students to the arc the club needs to swing on on how the CLUBFACE is in relation to that. Great work Andrew!!!

Yes, Manuel de La Torre... almost unknown now , classic simplistic teaching and very much a proponent of allowing the body to respond to forces presented by arms and club unit ( forearms, wrists and club). I used MDLT teaching last year and was astounded how simple his concepts were. I was further impressed that Trackman numbers all improved towards optimal without a single technical or positional thought.

Very good Andrew. In the last few years as I’ve gotten older, just past 70, I seem to do better by keeping my back to the target as long as possible. I go to a public range to practice. I see so many doing exactly what you’re describing. I hit the ball pretty good for my age. I try to help some of the ones struggling with their swing. The problem I developed a few years ago, was spinning out with my lower body. I’ve always swung in to out, and hit a draw. The other problem I see on the range, is many hit behind the ball. This video addresses that as well, by shifting our weight to the front.

OK: Now going to work this to see how it affects my lag. Am close by doing the other videos on arm wrist movement. [seems like my current PGA instructor keeps telling me to hold back on the arms and get the push with no arm movement -- using the other videos have freed up my swing considerably] Ok, work on getting the arms moving faster with the weight shift -- my two swings thoughts, 'back to the target' & 'squish the spider with my left heel.' Off to the range.... Thank You!

Excellent concept for the weekend warrior! I observe one of the things that separate the pro from the amateur is the pro's ability to separate their hip turn from their shoulder turn. A young pro, in their 20's, are flexible enough to do this and get posted up on the left side while their hands are still above their waste in the downswing. (Fred Couples is one exception, he can still do this into his 60's.) As the pro gets older, in his 30's, that flexibility wains and changes have to be made to stay competitive; Butch Harmon had Tiger work on this drill even before he turned 30. I am really in tune with your teaching style. Thanks for breathing some fresh air into the mass of confusion available on KZfaq.

@@AndrewEmeryGolf I used your grip method (left hand on at the side, right hand under) today and unbelievably I picked up 5 yards on my irons. The first few greens I hit to the back or over the green. My biggest fault (in my opinion) is as I get tired toward the end of the round I lose my weight shift to the left and hit the ground behind the ball. I'm 65 and play to a 9 handicap. I had my left knee replaced 4 years ago and have struggled with weigh shift ever since. I'll work on your weigh shift drills and hopefully they will help. Thanks!

Thanks for watching! I believe in meeting you “where you are!” You have to find what works for you! One size will NEVER fit all with golf. Science and evidential data has made teaching easier in many respects but there is also a downside! Communicating that complex knowledge into bite sized salient points for your student requires a lot of creativity - it’s where science meets Art with instruction! In my humble opinion if you want to impress your student make it complicated, but if you want to “help them” keep it simple! And the latter will always be my objective. Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

Thanks. This could very well be why I’m trapped between a block right and a snap hook. I remember when Tiger, back in the early 90s, was asked what his main thought was during the golf swing. His answer was that he was trying to hit the ball with his back to the target. This makes perfect sense to me now.

Excellent Andrew (again!). Ive been on this (DIY) trail for including driver speed improvement aspects for about a year now (amateur), and while there's nothing new for me here (just because ive extensively honed in on almost "everything" possible) I keep re-finding and then sometimes (unknowingly) losing the sequence when I introduce something new, or focus on a new emphasis. Obviously its not fully, subconsciously "grooved". Having your sequencing as another reference, has helped me check/understand where I have gone off track and perhaps confirm when I am back on track. Thanks, Schaun

My last golf season went backwards when i was trying this body rotation thing everyone is pushing. It made me feel like i can't transfer power to the ball. I was all body making pulls, hooks and blocks trying to keep face square at impact. Minimal hand action with no proper release of clubhead. Now it is crystal clear what i neeed to do. More hands early on downswing and letting my body react to what hands are doing. Combining it to proper release and i think i'm going at least 30 yards longer drives or even more. Finally piecing it together.

The golf swing is a marriage between the dynamic movement of the body, the swinging motion of the arms and the articulation of the wrists! The trick is engaging the appropriate swing feel that’s relevant to your swing pattern. For many high speed elite golfers - the body needs to get more open because they glide too much, get the club stuck under the plane and struggle with face control. But, If you’re a transition spinner and you get caught up in ‘Body Centric’ coaching, there’s a very good chance that you will get worse!! It doesn’t make the coaching incorrect, it just isn’t the right fit is all. The vast majority of golfers require a different feel! They turn their body way too aggressively in the transition with excessive tension in the joints. By stalling the spin phase and swinging the club more freely the results can be astonishing. Your body will of course react dynamically to the swinging motion of the arms. If seen it work wonders thousands of times before. Get after it & Welcome aboard! Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

Good points. Actually, for me, when my club gets to the top of the backswing, I feel 90% of my weight moving to my lead leg and I hold that weight there throughout the swing. This eliminates the need to rotate much at all. I'm 70 and in good shape but I can't do all the things required in the golf swing so I KISS. I maintain my lag because that's important. After that I only focus on keeping all my weight on my front foot. With those two thoughts, most of my balls with all my clubs (not the driver) go straight and high. The driver is another beast.

Andrew Do you straighten your elbows like in the downswing in this video when you are distance pitching and fineese pitching or is it a connected torso turn bringing your arms down?
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf Жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, when you pitch your arms remain connected to your torso. There is less arm elevation in the backswing so you simply move your arms at the same speed as your torso. Here’s a recent video I did on pitching which should help explain: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7yqnsSVuM2rZqM.html Thanks for watching! 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

Hi Andrew, thank you so much for an excellent instructional video. I have one question, as you are bringing your hands down toward the trail leg in the downswing, do you want the butt end of the grip pointing toward the ball ( target line) or somewhere between the ball and your feet on the downswing. Thank you. Jay

Hi Andrew, I just saw a video about Harvey Penick's "magic" downswing move. It seems to me to tie in very well with your LAG video. For me it is easy to visualize letting your trail arm/elbow drop. Not drive it down, but move quickly. The move seems to maintain lag a little longer and keep the chest pointed a little away from the target. Do you think this is something worth trying?
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf Жыл бұрын
Mr Penick was a genius Rory. Absolutely! Keep your upper body back as long as you can, and speed up your your arms - Remember they control the verticals in the golf swing! You’ll be dropping the club on plane in no time at all! ⛳️🏌️🙏

Do you feel creating speed with right elbow to get club down or do you feel speed is created with your hands? Great channel.

Your trail arm needs to feel like it’s extending and rotating faster then the body is turning! This is a fantastic feel that creates lag! Important not to conflate the arms dropping with losing angles in your wrist! You shouldn’t feel speed in your ‘hands’ until the club is released through impact! You’re essentially swinging your arms as your body is turning! It’s a marriage! Thanks for watching! Coach A. ⛳️🏌️‍♂️🙏🏻

I’ve been struggling with improper sequencing for a while now and I’ve felt that I was using too much of my wrists to get the club face square. I figured it was because I wasn’t rotating enough or early extending. Before watching your video it never occurred to me that I needed to speed up my hands (at least without also rotating my body). If I understand you correctly, I should be throwing my hands down (with elbow tucked and the wrists still cocked) first before rotating. When I try this (without a club) it feels like the harder I throw, that not only does my body automatically want to rotate due to the force but it feels like the release will also happen automatically. Is that the feel I should have? It feels fairly natural and I hope to try it on the range soon.

Great video!!! Early rotation of my shoulders has caused all of the issues you have mentioned and causing me to have inconsistency with my irons. Swinging the arms twice as fast makes sense since they have further to travel. Do you have any drills to help imbed this movement into a swing? Thanks
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf Жыл бұрын
Too many to put in this thread!! 🤣🤣🤣 Step drills will help tremendously with sequencing!! They take some practice but watch the video and use one of the three versions that works for you. Most golfers enter the spin phase way too early. Step drills encourage the correct dynamic order. You’ll naturally GLIDE before you open up which should give you a good feel for better timing. Hope it helps! Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7xon91znp2rpYk.html

Thanks for the feedback. Yesterday I went to the range and tried doing the technique of keeping the shoulders closed until I got the butt end of the handle back under my trail shoulder. The very first thing that I felt was my shoulder turn powering the swing but my strikes were a bit thin. Then on one of my strikes I had kept my shoulders closed longer during the downswing and WOW a clean compressed strike. So I tried to reproduce that same “feeling” of keeping the shoulders closed longer and it resulted in more clean strikes. So what do I think happened in this practice session? Even though it “felt” like I was keeping my shoulders closed longer during the downswing, it was ok because previously I had been opening them up way too early causing all kinds of issues. So relatively speaking it “felt” like a longer period of time that I was keeping the shoulders closed. Like what we hear so many times is that we have to overdo the remedy to obtain the “feel” on our way to the fix. Andrew many THANKS for encouraging me try this as I now feel like I am getting my money’s worth on my golf swings.

Whenever I’ve tried to “drop” my hands in the downswing to shallow out my path I hit the ball “fat” or not even at all because it goes into the ground. Any tips?
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf Жыл бұрын
It’s critical that you pair the ball position and weight distribution to the type of club you’re hitting first! You may have to play the ball slightly back and move your weight slightly forward before doing anything. Check out this video to help you with an effective “set up” system for your irons!👇👇👇 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNVibJagpt_ZgKc.html Having said that while your arms control the verticals, if you TIP or fall “back” prior to getting your hands down to P6 you’re going to hit it fat! Try making some swings combining the arms dropping with your upper body moving forward through the ball! Brushing the grass opposite your lead foot will ensure you are bringing the bottom of your arc FORWARD!! Start with the set up, then work on moving that flat spot! Hope that helps! Just got back from the range... had a push draw going... I think I am still using too much body. Hard to keep that quiet...but when I did, I got amazing results. ??,,,do you bring the butt end of the club down focusing on your right arm doing most of the work and then unhinging the right elbow into the ball? Seems the right arm would be stronger than the left for righthanders.

The unfortunate but typical problem is that local coaches we have access to dont teach like this yet are PGA certified etc etc... Its quite annoying to waste money on a "certified" coach just to leave a lesson with more questions than answers and no results.

Scott, lots of wonderful PGA Golf Professionals and Instructors out there. As well as Non-PGA for that matter. Many of the top coaches in the country aren’t PGA members. It’s best to do some serious research. Ask the right questions! And, ultimately commit to a program!! So many golfers looking for the quick fix. Having said that you should NEVER finish a lesson with more questions than answers!! If I can shed some light then please reach out via my website. The bulk of my lessons are online! Hang in there! It’s the arms that drop in the transition. I can see how dropping the hands could be misconstrued of course. But it’s the upper arms that are responsible for the verticals. My subscribers I’m sure will comment on any misinformation or misinterpretation of my videos. It’s certainly not up to me to interpret them. I don’t like to get in the weeds! The golf IQ of the majority of people that watch my videos is high. I think most understand the concepts as well as the feel v REAL paradigm. Ultimately you need to find what works best for you! The problem with that Explanation is it doesn’t start the swing but he’s misconstruing that point and that causes issues in the swing. Yes they drop in transition but only after the swings starts with the left side! That needs to be clarified. Imho
