This is based on a true story - the last ever judicial duel in France. I did my mother's family tree a couple of years back and it turns out my direct ancestor Jean de Vauloger played a pivotal role in this story. Jean de Vauloger was Matt Damon's character Jean de Carrouges' neighbour. Jean de Carrouges intended to purchase land from my ancestor, but the sale was forbidden by both men's overlord and Jean de Carrouges subsequently blamed Jacques le Gris (Adam Driver's character), beginning the tensions that led to the events depicted here. Jean de Vauloger would end up being chosen as Jacques le Gris' witness during the duel

Its a really complex story. Jean de Carrouges(Damon Character) anf Jacque Le Gris(Drivers character) where at one point very good friends. They where such good friends that Le Gris was godfather to Carrogues son. Carrouges fell on hard times, his first wife and son died of what was likely a plague outbreak, then their Lord the Duke of Alecon passed and his brother the Count of Perche (Afflecks role in the movie)became Duke and he favored Le Gris greatly including being granted a estate the new Duke purchased at Aunon-le Faucon. Meanwhilr Carrouges was disfavored for some reason( while an excellent knight he was known to be temperamental) Carrouges remarried to Margaret De Thibouville(Jody Comer's to role,) whose Father had sold Aunon-le Faucon to the new Duke to pay off debts. Carrouges felt the town was legally part of his new wifes dowry and sued his own Lord the Duke in Court and Lost. This increased tensions and Carrouges was in further disfavor.

The outcome of the true historical crime case is that the truth of the matter - whether the rape actually did happen - is VERY ambiguous. No one truly knows whether or not who actually lied and is guilty/innocent. I did some research on the real life case and both men made very strong points as to whether or not Le Gris (Adam Driver's character) could have done it; he made good points as to why he couldn't have raped Marguerite (Jodie Comer) whereas her husband also made really good points as to why Le Gris could have done it and is lying. Spoilers as to those who want to wait and see the surprise outcome of the duel... . . . Le Gris lost the duel at the last second when it looked like he won, only for de Carrouges (Marguerite's husband) to suddenly spring up when down and stabbed him in the neck. The reason why Marguerite is alone in the one scene was just her giving her testimony as to what happened (the trial stretched out for months because of how little evidence there was and it was a he said/she said case for the most part). At that point, she was heavily pregnant as well. (Makes me wonder whether the father was her husband or attacker.) Eventually, Le Gris was declared innocent (in part to his high ranking and the lack of evidence) but de Carrouges requested a duel, was granted permission and it was declared the duel would be God himself declaring who was lying and telling the truth. If de Carrouges died, it was supposedly God declaring his wife lied about being raped (and she would be burned at the stake for it) and if he won, it would be decided Le Gris did rape Marguerite. de Carrouges won, even with the odds being highly stacked against him, therefore legally absolving the case (and making it the last sanctioned duel in France). However, even afterwards, many still firmly believed Le Gris was innocent and declared him an honorable man. There were many who believed Marguerite and that she spoke the truth about what happened. Hence, it's been left a crime mystery and more of a "You Decide" kind of thing.

Someone said it best. In 2021 Hollywood isn’t making a movie about a woman lying. So I would only go into this just to watch the actors. But the plot and narrative is known so I’m good. The best case scenario is making it ambiguous

“The lengths of men go for 😺” IS NOT what you get outta this trailer at all actually. They understood nothing of the story and had a very shallow approach.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, poor accents, took me out of it. Should've taken the same story and set it in American Civil war era, with some twists, would've been far more genuine.
