For anecdote a friend of mine was an extra, the trial scene having been shot in France in the Fontfroide abbey. She saw Ben Affleck dressed as Pierre, but not recognizing him and thinking it was another extra, she asked him for water, in French, and you can imagine that he didn't understand and didn't answer. Finally, it was when she left the cinema, more than a year after the shooting, that she realized that it was this actor.

Which it shouldn't have done. This film is based on an historical event that happened seven hundred years ago, there isn't possibly any way the filmmakers could know "the truth". They should have left the last chapter titled as "The truth according to Lady Carrouges" and left it at that.

That scene could have come from a court room today? Are you on crack? Our judicial system is completely different as it has completely shifted form favoring a man's account to a woman's account. Yes, it hinges on the evidentiary, but that is a good thing as we have hoaxes nowadays. Something that could never and would never exist back then as the punishment was a brutal death if not only caught lying, but if some arbitrary pseudo-science and/or religion deems you a liar.

I believe Ridley wanted to show how Jacques interaction with woman prior. “With the whores” some could look at that scene and say that was rape as well. In fact the motions of throwing the woman on the bed then turning her over was exactly mirrored in the rape.
@drzerogi
@drzerogi 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I think the purpose of his scene with the whores was to show that Jacques is accustomed to playing this chasing game with women. So when Margarit ran from Jacques at Jean's castle, Jacques - drunk with lust - rationalized it in his head that she was playing the same chasing game; concluding that the affair was consensual (in his mind). Of course, it was, in actuality, rape.

I found it interesting that Jean allowed the public to know about the rape. Because Jean knew that Jacques was a womanizer and by having the rumor spread, he knew both men and women would find their claims to be somewhat true. Through Jacques already has a bad reputation with women so therefore the rumor would spread faster. It almost kind of resembles the me too movement where women have a better case against a man if more people hear about it and more victims confess via social media etc. It wasn't quite the same but it seems the tactics were the same for its time.

Dear sir, you did not explain the ending of the movie. You retold the storyline roughly. Yet, e.g., what about the development of the relationship between the couple during the time of process? From here I would also question the idea that "all was absolutely based on true events".

Bang on. The movie, while well acted and shot, is a travesty in one regard. The whole point of the book is that while we have a strong hunch about what happened, we can't possibly know "the truth." This movie flies in the face of that central idea. Like as if we could possibly the "the truth" about what happened seven hundred years ago and nothing but some historical records and hearsay.

@@kermitfrog593 Good point, Kermit, concerning the core of the story. The third part, from the view of the wife, portraits her quite triumphant in that she sess through patriarchsim and being clever alla alone (inventing the use of horses for ploughing, in passing). Perhaps we can say, the uncertainty shifted towards the secondary question who is the father, then. - PS. Do you know the novel of Tristan and Isolde where the woman Is smart and cheates in a divine ordeal ?
@kermitfrog593
@kermitfrog593 Жыл бұрын
@@pib2008 The problem with that third part is that it erases nuance and lowers the stakes. If she's in an unhappy marriage, her only benefit of Jean winning the fight is her preserving her life. If she loves her husband (which the filmmakers don't want us to believe she did), the stakes are higher, as she has her own life, husband and child to worry about.
@pib2008
@pib2008 Жыл бұрын
@@kermitfrog593 Oh, I recognized some subteties and a drop height in the third part as made up by the script. At first, Marguerite loves her husband, she's devoted to him and obedient. But irritations occur when Jean is not able to feel any sympathy for her. Be it for her modern clothing, and when he violates her because he wants to be last who had sex with her. Probably, Jean always solely has the preservation of his honour in mind. Left alone, Marguerite tends to oppose him, in words in a passage and with bitter silence during and after the duel. Period circumstances and contemporary individualistic views intermingle in ths portrait. - What a pity, you and me cannot sit and re-watch & review the movie together.

First of all, in your title you promised to 'Explain the Ending' ending was explained in 5 seconds. So for you all readers, I will try to provide the explanation of the ending I interpreted. So who was the father? As I understood it, it does not matter whose child it was. The baby is much more blonde and resembles Her then any of the fathers. Meaning that she was used by two men, who wanted to settle scores and be better then the other for all her married life. In the end, one was killed in the duel the other in war and she came out as the victor with a child that is only hers, since the baby seems to be just as fair and innocent as she was. There.

@@crispylizard4348 you do realize some US politicians are still using that explanation until recently right? @kermitfrog593
@kermitfrog593 Жыл бұрын
But this is the problem that I have with the film. Why do we assume the wife came out "the victor"? For some reason this film goes to great lengths to portray the wife as living in an unhappy marriage - how do the filmmakers know that? Maybe she loved her husband and lamented his death. If this were fiction they could take whatever creative license they wanted, but to claim their version of events is "the truth" is stupid, and also rejects the central idea of the book, the movie's source material.

Well, I see someone wasn’t taught in school about Mendel in science class. Either that or you weren’t paying attention. Dark-haired genes are dominant. So, there’s only about a quarter chance that a child between Le Gris and Marguerite would be blond. So, it’s probably her husband’s child. Again, did you not learn about the genetics squares and the experiments with the pea plants? Good grief. I think she was smiling because 1) she was happy she was alive to see her son grow up despite the horrible position her idiot husband put her in and 2) because she felt completely vindicated by God. Despite her hardship, she felt that her faithfulness was rewarded by God giving her a child with her husband, which is the only thing she wanted.

Just saw it on a plane yesterday. I didn't expect much but I thought it was terrific. A medieval movie for 21st Centurry audiences - plenty of action and violence, but also focusing on the patriarchy at its most unpleasant and centering on sexual violence, which was part of medieval warfare but has rarely been focused on seriously in Hollywood depictions of the era. Also getting various versions of an event is and interesting way to tell a story. The castles are gorgeous and aside from those ridiculous half visored helmets, the armor looks like it represents the gear from at least 50 years later. But that doesn't detract measurably from the overall sense that I am left with after seeing it. The most important medieval movie in a long time.

It’s Rashomon. I don’t say that to take away from the movie. I enjoyed it, especially as a period piece. Still, Rashomon totally came to mind.
@linussage60
@linussage60 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say the biggest difference between this movie and Rashomon is that The Last Duel picks a side. It blatantly states the woman's chapter as "the truth". Rashomon never tells you who's account is correct, if any of them even are.

The TRUTH IS Jean and Margarette were in LOVE!!!! The whole property crap is of the times, but Jean did everything and anything to get his wife justice. The reason she never married wasn't because of anything to do with not liking men, but she lost the love of her life!!! Any man and women who would put their lives in possible death and come out alive in the end. That is TRUE passion and sacrifice. Now a days, nobody wants to make sacrifices for the people we love. So sad!!!

I watch this movie like I am watching Monty Python basically. I see at as a satirical commentary on or perceived objective truth. However I am not sure it is meant to be that. But I did watch it again and I feel like they are obviously in on the joke and I am just a friggin moron. But idk. Watch it in the monty python satirical commentary vein and it will not disappoint. The first thing this movie teaches you is to not take it seriously. I do find it pretty damn funny and a great movie. Sadly women are still going through the exact same thing nearly 1000 years later and the same social pressures are still felt just as acutely by women in the 21st century. That is what the movie is about.
