There were thousands of fire towers. It was a very boring job.

Back in 73 or 74, my Dads ol classmate would take his 2 boys and hunt near Mio mi, their camp was near the base of the tower at Mio. That’s how Dad & I found them as we were all from down state in Lenawee Co. 50 yrs ago seems like such a long time . Thanks for the tour ❤️😃, and some great memories

I ran a fire tower as a seasonal employee of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources back in the 1970’s in the southwest corner of Taylor county. I worked in the spring after the snow melted and before things greened up while the dry grass was a fire hazard and again in fall when the leaves were down and dry. I called my tower my home on high steel and truly enjoyed the job though it didn’t pay much. A few years later I worked one summer for a tower crew taking down fire towers in the Nicolet National Forest around Lakewood and Wabeno. My old tower was eventually taken down also, as were most of the rest in the Chequamegon Forest and fire detection was done with an airplane.Occasionally I would be called upon to help fight fires near my area and found out how out of shape a guy gets when his job is sitting on his butt and looking out a window all day.

I appreciated the subtle “on video” comment. I’ve gone to the top of two MN towers in the distant past. I think only one of them is still standing. They are becoming a rare site. Thanks for taking us along. 👍

In the classic film, How To Marry A Millionaire, Betty Grable's character marries Rory Calhoun's character believing him to own thousands of acres, only to find out he is a civil servant watching over thousands of acres - from a tower.

The fire tower was always a place we would go hang out at when we were kids/young adults. I've climbed it a few times. It was falling apart back then, and didn't have a floor, so I wouldn't recommend climbing it anymore, but the view is absolutely spectacular. We went up on the 4th of July once and watched 3 different fireworks shows. My brothers and I have a cool pic of us at the top. If you're in to 2-tracking, you can get to it from the power lines to the southwest of it. Lots of good memories there!

Been there, myself! Do you know of another tower in the area, made of wood? Not near as tall. Seems I remember timber framing. Could've been somewhere else, though.

Every state in the union but Kansas? We still have prairie fires... This was fascinating! I believe those stations are important and I hope it is restored quickly and put back in service. I love my home state! Thank you for this!!

They used to have one near our family cottage on Black Mountain/Twin Lakes area, over looking Black Lake. We have a couple family photos taken from there though the 60's. We miss the vista views we could have from that site.

Me and my friends found this fire tower on fire tower road off of M55 back in 1981. It's situated on the rim of what appears to be an old meteor crater which makes up Udell hills.

Great video! Although I believe there are a few other lookout towers left standing in the lower peninsula. I've only looked in the Huron National Forest, but I know there is at least one left near Curran that is visible from google earth. I will eventually put together a map and do a more comprehensive search

I know that the Curran fire tower was still standing in 2016. If you are heading east on M72 from Fairview, you can see it on the horizon as you get close to M65. I haven't been that way in a few years though.

Hi RV, I stumbled on this sight looking at trikes. I grew up in Wisconsin, my family came here in the mid 1800s from Norway. I'm building a camper and going to buy a regular e-trike for me and the dog. Plan on traveling and chasing the sun. Maybe we'll see you on the back roads. Norseman
