The Penan are one of the last indigenous hunter-gatherer tribes on earth. They are a semi-nomadic people who live in the rainforests of the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo -- and their way of life is now threatened.
Peng Megut is one of the last forest nomads who still carry a blowgun as they roam the jungle. Peng and a number of men from his tribe are defending their community against a palm-oil plantation that they believe has trespassed on their land. Until just a few years ago, this region was home to one of the oldest primeval forests in the world. It covered an area that was half the size of Germany.
Then timber companies started clear-cutting trees, and destroyed 90-percent of the forest. Forty tribes and ethnic groups, including the Penan, live in what's left. The Penan have resisted adopting a "modern" lifestyle longer than any other indigenous tribe in Borneo. They call their home "Tong Tana" -- which means both "forest" and "world."
The woodland is a central component of the Penan's identity. It is the final resting place of their ancestors, and represents the heart of their spirituality, culture, and history. The tribe's existence is sustainable, and the people live in harmony with nature. They hunt for food -- and the forest supplies all their other needs, as well. But since the mid-20th century, the lives of the Penan have changed radically. They still live in the jungle, but most of them have now moved into villages.

I live in the neighbouring state of Sabah..both our states are on Borneo Island. Sad to see people being displaced, habitats destroyed, cultures sometimes lost due to modernity. I'm all for development, but not to the detriment of people, especially natives. We see it happening everywhere, no exception here. Not all development is good, nor is it all bad. There should be a balance, but I've seem more destruction and hardship in recent times. I will watch this documentary to the end, thank you for bringing this story to the world. My late husband attended a short course at Deutsche Welle in the 90s.

I am a person of white english heritage living on Kabi Kabi land in Australia. My ancestors in Europe and England have been very sick for tens of thousands of years... raping the children and women and men killing each other as part of a sickness which leaves children insecure and people unable to return home to their healthy connection with each other and with whatever were their more sustained and sustainable homelands... with each war, rape, conception out of place without welcome,... with each stab of colonisation more and more insecurity and unwelcome and force upon individuals and groups brought more of this sick addiction and ignorance and loss of life being together happy and knowing and havign and being enough. I am so sorry this sickness is spreading like a cancer across the world and has come to your ancestral land.. the sickness will kill all who are addicted to it's poison.... and the land will return to provide return to better health again. I am so sorry for all the animals and humans, in places like Burma and Australia and Central Americas and Africa who are still trying to just live happy with what they have and have learned. Modern humanity is addicted humanity... without a home. Please lets learn to respect the lands, waters, animals, spirits and learn from those who still know and respect those who still know. I respect the Dayaks, the Kelabits, the Kabi Kabi... all the naked and unashamed to be naked, al those with wisdom most people have lost... all those forced to watch so much horror, madness and destruction of everything that we need to simply live... We do not need all the other crap... all the crap to sicken and pollute and profit. Profit = loss... tragedy beyond bearing.... humanity cannot bear this, other lives cannot bear this... and the humans will break as we break the trees and the life.. Respect to all people still in the forests on boats, on rivers and seas.... don't let anyone take more homes and more lives! respect!

Everywhere journalist do that kind of journalism, as in Salvador and else where, Companies send armed mercenaries to complete the genocide...You tell them how many they are, how desperate they are, where they are and they have no one to protect them. That's how Modern world has stolen the land everywhere in the world with the help of newspapers always ready to sell their news papers made of timber... lots of rain forest lost and their people sacrificed ✨🎡✨🐱‍🐉

As i was growing up in North Borneo, i have witnessed the deforestation right in front of my eyes. Beautiful hills full of big trees and wild animals slowly filled with palm oil trees. During the night, big trucks carried big tree logs will drive through the roads. It was all interconnected with a logging/timber / O&G / palm oil company, corruptions, etc. These companies work all together to profits the natural resources of Borneo states. I cried when i saw there is no longer forest nor big trees in some part of Borneo. As part of indigenous / Kadazan tribes, being in nature is always special and it is running in our blood. There was a long history that can be traced back to our ancestor. How we used to survive by hunting for food. As modernization and education happen, the lifestyle rapidly changes. As much as i love living with current modern lifestyle, we still taught to live humble and remember where we come from; to respect the nature, culture and the way of living. This is a very bittersweet documentary...

I've driven through the plantations before and it's essentially a desert: only one plant lives there, barely anything else can survive. It's desolate and the biggest reason me and my family refuse to buy products that use palm oil if we have alternatives. Furthermore the logging companies will resort to burning wood that they don't consider fit for sale since it's cheaper than moving it away which not only creates large amounts of greenhouse gases but pollutes the air.

Really like these documentaries to see how other’s still live in this world. If they are happy there, let them be, they are not hurting anyone. Seeing all those tree’s cut down for money makes me sad, civilisation doesn’t have to cost other’s happiness and land. I wish them all the best & they are not endangered.

Earth Crisis ! Good doco eh ! I once visited Kuching in Sarawak some years ago where I had the opportunity to visit a near by timber plantation. I did ask as to how the Timber industry in East Malaysia managed itself in a sustainable way. I was told there are designated areas in which are deforested and replanted ect though this seemed Sketchy. I did speak to someone in Singapore in this industry and yeah I was many concessions has been given out to bidders ( Bidding process is just as sketchy) in the State of Sarawak. For the rest of the Island of Sabah and Kalimantan (Indonesia), I think its equally the same. I hope things improve where there is a sense of Harmony with the Environment, the local habitats and the M'sian/S'pore Timber industry. If not call the local "Bomoh!" Meanwhile i will worry about covid and brexit here in the UK. LOL.

Dayak people has been pushed away in Indonesia as well, tribal wars and micro-economic empowerment becomes their means to retain their homeland, however in Indonesia the regime is dynamic and change for better at faster rate, unlike Malaysia. Without recognizable seat on the government, Malaysia's Dayak may face a much tougher times. It is ridiculous to force the native indigenous people of Malaysian Dayak to prove residency and land ownership prior to 1958... Thanks DW! Please to also cover the Indonesian side of similar ethnic...

I hear so much Filipino words in their language…I remember my grandma had nose flutes& blow guns made from bamboo, she had calendar with tribal people from Borneo…my grandma used to tell me that they’re my culture & I always thought that they were Filipinos growing up…maybe they are or maybe Filipino tribes share the same or similar culture’s..they are nomadic so maybe they built a boat and traveled to the Philippines as well. I have so many questions I want to ask my grandma but she’s old and she doesn’t talk much anymore..she’ll answer yes or no questions and say hi to me maybe 1-3x a month and it makes me really sad when I reminisce about how she used to be..I wish I could turn back time so I can 100% enjoy her stories and knowledge she has and would share with me

It does not surprise me that business profit drives national and international companies to grab more land for palm oil. Questions is why governments (Malaysia, Brazil, Bangladesh, India, and in so many countries) remain silent and even take the side of companies when Indigenous Peoples, who are original inhabitants, are forcibly displaced from their ancestral land? More importantly, what can be done or have been effective in protecting Indigenous land, culture, and ways of life?
