FILM DESCRIPTION:
Edward Zwick returned to the director's chair for the first time since 1998's The Siege with this sweeping period drama set in 19th-century Japan. After centuries of relying on hired samurai for national defense, the Japanese monarchy has decided to do away with the warriors in favor of a more contemporary military. Tom Cruise stars as Nathan Algren, a veteran of the U.S. Civil War who is hired by the Emperor Meiji to train an army capable of wiping out the samurai. But when Algren is captured by the samurai and taught about their history and way of life, he finds himself conflicted over who he should be fighting alongside. Billy Connelly, Tony Goldwyn, and Ken Watanabe co-star.

I love Tom Cruise's character in this movie. He is so damaged and broken. Everything he has seen has turned him into a dead, hopeless, and hollow human. But he still fights, he stands back up, even when he has no motivation. He knows he'll get knocked back down.

Because he is hoping to die, he doesn't have any hope in life, and living seems very meaningless to him. Thats why he always drinks alcohol and fighting without any fear. He is a very sad, deep, melancholic character.

I love how this scene shows the difference between the two cultures. The Samurai devote their lives to the perfection of whatever they pursue, and they move with grace and power. However, they accept when they have been bested humbly and with respect. Algren sees defeat as an invitation to try again, coming back harder and faster than before. He blunders and fails constantly, but he doesn’t care about winning. He shows his strength in his willingness to come back for more. It’s a concept unfamiliar and even offensive to his opponent, who lashes out at him in anger. Algren later on encourages Katsumoto to adopt the same mentality when fighting the Japanese army after having lost so much. Katsumoto in turn teaches Algren throughout the film how to find peace in life and regain his lost honor. The film does a brilliant job of showing both culture learning from each other and eventually working towards a common goal. (Or, Nathan could be running headlong into danger because he’s borderline suicidal at this point. Either works).

That's not saying Algren doesn't know how to fight with a sword but his way is much more based on his experience in war, not an art like it was with the Samurai.

Algren may have been a depressed alcoholic with little to no prospects in the USA, but he still had a glimmer of hope in him. That's what Katsumoto saw when he looked on Algren for the first time, he saw Algren as a wounded tiger. This scene represents Algren's fighting spirit, or "Toshi", restarting his soul in new surroundings.

This movie is literally beautiful.... One of my favorite of all time. Cruise's best role IMO. The depth, the intimacy the spirituality, and Hans Zimmer outdid himself. The hell with historical accuracy, this movie is perfect.

The woman who was watching, had her husband killed by Algren, however when she saw how resilient and honourable he was, she at least knew her husband died at the hands of a great warrior. Keeping their family honour intact.

Hiroyuki Sanada at his best, in my opinion. He might've said 20 words the entire movie, yet he was still arguably my favorite character. The evolution from disdain to respect that he shows for Capt. Algren, throughout the film, I thought, was the most valuable piece of character development. I look forward to giving his filmography a deep dive when I get the opportunity.

Hiroyuki Sanada is an amazing and extremely talented man! His presence in EVERYTHING he does is felt. It does not matter if he is in only 5 episodes of a series, in a movie for 85% of the film or only 30 minutes of it! He truly is an outstanding actor! And frankly….. he is absolutely, positively… DELICIOUS!! 😍😘

I suffered a near fatal heart attack in April 2018 in freezing rain and as I lay on the cold ground with nobody to help me, I had to dig deeper into my body, mind and soul to stand up so as to walk to get help. This scene reminds me of that most difficult day of my life. Stand up and fight for whatever you love, want and need.

Although he got his arse kicked, in this moment he earned their respect. A person who does not give up despite facing a superior opponent is a person to be reckoned with. Despite the huge chasm in cultures, they could see he has indomitable spirit and heart. A beautifully moving scene.

Katsumuto already saw Algren’s spirit resembling that of the Tiger in their flag whos very resillient and never gives up regardless of his adversaries... thus Katsumoto respected Algren first more than anyone else in that Samurai clan... Ujio on the other hand had accepted Algren after this altercation... thus Algren earned his respect

God damn Uijo is a beast. I know this scene is meant to paint him as a villain for a time, but it kind of makes me love him. This actor does an incredible job of conveying Uijo's incredible pride yes, but in this moment also his fear. Algren at this point in the movie represents the encroachment of the world into Uijo's village. Every time he gets back up after Uijo beats him down, it seems to scare him more than just annoy him. It's a complex scene with not much said. It really holds up to this day and I just love it.

to me, this scene was always about East meeting West, "you must accept your defeat and submit" vs "try, try again". and the pity for him getting hurt changes into respect as they begin to understand it.

I love how they used the poetry of weather like in many Japanese stories and films.The heavy rain in the back drop relentlessly pouring down,and Hans Zimmer's music is simply beautiful. You cannot kill what is dead as this samurai starts to realize.Tom cruise in his best roll.

I love how in this scene Ujio starts off calm and more so tries to disarm Nathan (stirkes him in the chest with the kashira/pommel of the sword, waits, and then strikes Nathans sword in reaction to his attack rather than striking his wrist or body straight away), he knocks his sword away and walks away. Nathan gets up again and yet Ujio keeps relatively calm and collected, again he knocks Nathan down and knocks away the sword and walks away. Nathan wont give up which angers Ujio and makes him lose his composure, instead of giving up willingly Nathan keeps fighting until he physically cant anymore, and although this frustrates Ujio, i think this ultimately earns his respect and admiration. Despite this film being romanticized and not super historically accurate i think the choreography, the soundtrack, the story and line delivery was all amazing and told a compelling story. Nathan a broken man who is not afraid of death but even wishes for it, yet fights tooth and nail till the end for what he cares for. The film has contrasting ideas as a huge theme, life and death, differing views on the meaning of honour, the new vs the old, tradition vs modernisation. Nathan is the bridge between the rift, "the warrior in whom the old ways have joined the new" and i think the film demonstrated this amazingly. i hope we get a 4k uhd blu-ray of this film in the near future since a lot of movies are being remastered recently.

While I like this movie for its plot and soundtrack, The Last Samurai romanticizes the Satsuna Rebellion the same way Gods and Generals romanticizes the Confederacy. The samurai benefited from the caste system of Japan’s feudal age, and the Modernization was tearing down that caste system. So they were fighting for their prestige as well as their traditions

This is my favorite scene in the movie. It shows that while the samurai see defeat as being shameful, Capt Algren refuses to accept defeat despite how the odds might be stacked against him.

Most often, movies are full of inaccuracies because Hollywood Does Not Care. But this movie, I truly believe, is a deeper story than mere history. It is about personal integrity and honor, and about the passing of ages. The particular historical events are merely backdrop, setting.

One of my favourite movie scenes, a bit corny but damn inspiring. They all treated him like a cowardly dog for not killing himself to save his honor, but the subtle realisations conveyed by Sanada and Koyuki (actors who portrayed Ujio and Taka) that he was showing them a different kind of honor and that if anything, they misjudged him and he earned their respect.

The reason this is a particularly powerful scene is because of the Japanese ideal behind getting back up after being struck down. It was a trait that was taught to children, and was thought to only be present in their culture, seeing other, foreign people outside Japanese influence who often stayed down after being struck. The Japanese proverb behind the teaching goes, "nana korobi ya oki", which roughly means "seven times down, eight times up". Nathan's character does this, which is why everyone around him is mildly shocked to see a foreigner displaying as much resilience. The scene, I imagine, is specifically aimed at the Japanese audiences watching this movie, who know just how important this is to indicate how Nathan is a different kind of man: a man like them.

This is probably my favorite scene in this movie. The new and old ways of hand to hand combat contest each other. Combat/martial arts has its own language in which words dont need to be spoken but you can understand your opponent.

This duel is more of a cultural one. For one, never giving up is important, for other it's difficult to understand why the loser does not accept defeat in a dignified manner. Such a brilliant picturisation.

Whoever wrote this scene is a freaking genius. It's so moving. The uneducated us militar gave everything he could in that encounter. He conquered the best achievement available. Just great.
