I think of the Gunstar as more of a gunship then a starfighter. Where the B5 Starfury is the fighter. And both are the best looking and grounded in physics starfighters out there.

I would think that any small craft intended to engage other small craft in combat is a fighter. The Gunstar could probably be classed as a "Heavy" fighter for sure. I guess it depends on how you define a "Gunship" as in terms of spacecraft. On Earth its an aircraft with an attack role against ground targets. Usually in support of ground operations.

This would be akin to flying a highly manuverable bomber into a fray, but having a single gunner, and no bombs. At the moment, we have a single man flying the ship and firing the guns, and a "back seat" for nav and target acquisition, as well as an extra set of eyes. From a real-world perspectuve, the designer is very sound, save for one thing. The heads-up in the Gunstar should have incorporated VR, where the gunner is literally looking through the ship. As a single fighter, not so important, but a fray with several other Gunstars in range, firing through a mess of target locks would undoubtedly result in some friendly fire.

Dude, check your production notes/commentary, for B5 and you will find, that the Gunstar was the inspiration of the Starfury's layout and maneuvering engines. In essence, starfuries, are the inferior knock-off, of the Gunstar.

The death blossom could just work on “is something there? Fire” so it’s less acquisition and more just response. Cause lasers can’t miss. Which also might be why it fires randomly, either the sensors detect debris or space dust and trigger the “yes” so it fires at something that isn’t an enemy.
@wakirk
@wakirk 2 жыл бұрын
If you listen carefully Grig tells Alex to only use the lasers while charging death blossom, likely to conserve and charge power for DB. He lost power maybe because the lasers were the last to transfer power to DB. As for targeting, there was a minimum range the enemy ships needed to be in, and they all needed to be in that range. After that, it was partly targeting, partly spray and pray. The rockets got the locks, where the lasers shot at anything that wiggled. That, in my head cannon anyway, makes sense, and why the ship was fully drained. Also, it said "slight" weapons modification. This makes me think the doors that open are normally used to load the weapons magazines and not normally used during combat. Grid seems to have programmed the ship to fire directly from the magazines rather then them load into launch tubes. Maybe why the warning it could blow up the ship if something didn't go right because of a misfire. It could blow the mag and destroy the ship. my 0.0002 cents anyway.
@carlmolander8499
@carlmolander8499 2 жыл бұрын
I think of modern cwis cannons they can be set to fire at anything in range moving. Friendly or not. Sort of a death zone. Not something normally used for obvious reasons but worse case scenario a ship with multiple missiles coming all directions you may not care. set weapon system loose and pray you survive.

The Rylan Gunstar is an example of a true Newtonian physics space based fighter one will ever see. It pivots on it's axis to engage targets using thrusters mounted outboard to change the ships line of travel. It doesn't follow the "Planes is Space" trop so many franchises like Star Wars follows, yet the Gunstar was also capable of in atmosphere flight as well. The landing and take-off position as a tail sitter is brilliant and quite correct. The only other proper physics' following fighter I can thing of off hand is the Star-Fury from Babalon-5. It's just that the Gunstar does it so much better, barring the ludicrously fast FTL drive the Gunstar has.

I'm thinking that that Death Blossom may have had a power source independent from the rest of the ship. This may seem feasible as it was an experimental addition and, for it to be executed properly, a determined amount of power may have already been allocated. With regards to the seemingly random firing of it's payload, I think these were already predetermined by the onboard AI as the pilot/navigator HUD had already plotted the targets that were coming in range. What may seem to be a miss may actually be lasers leading, or corralling, incoming targets onto the path of the missiles. -- love the Gunstar. Thanks for this one.

1 fighter class ship takes out an entire space armada. Reminds me of Andromeda with Kevin Sorbo who Captain's a High guard ship that is 500 years old (but because the universe fell into a dark ages, is more advanced than the current ships) and so his 1 ship takes on entire fleets. So very unrealistic without a supply base to reload his missiles and drones and repair the circuits and parts of his ship which always take damage in every battle of every episode. Sheer atrophy alone should have prevented his ship from even surviving a single tv season after all the "battle damage" it repeatedly endures in every fire fight - and always because Captain Diplomacy always waits to be attacked and respond instead of shooting first. In real life naval combat, first strike always wins given how deadly the weapons of today are.
@dtester
@dtester 2 жыл бұрын
@@toddkes5890 I see a few comments like this calling it a gunship/gunboat instead of a fighter. But my question is how are you defining a gunboat/gunship in terms of spacecraft? For aircraft a gunship has a ground attack role. For boats a gunboat has a role for attacking coastal targets. The Gunstar definitely fills the space fighter role. If you are trying to say it's big and well armed I think calling it a Heavy Fighter is accurate.
@toddkes5890
@toddkes5890 2 жыл бұрын
@@dtester Gunstar as gunboat because the facing barely affects arc of fire for the direct-fire weapons. A Gunboat carries smaller weapons for its size, but they point in all directions so there is almost no safe spot. A fighter is where the direct-fire weapons are primarily aimed in a small cone and the platform rotates to bring them to bear. Facing determine danger. This allows a platform to carry heavier weapons for its size, at the penalty of reduced firing arc.
@dtester
@dtester 2 жыл бұрын
@@toddkes5890 So my follow up question to that would be "Where did that distinction come from?" It sounds like something that comes from maybe one particular sci-fi IP but does not seem to be a universal rule. edit: To add, I tend to lean toward role-based classifications. A fighter is a fighter because it performs a fighter role. A gunship would be one when it performs a gunship role. I don't think have turrets or not is a factor :)

About Gunstars auto-target, its obvious that the ship have a som typ of AI or combat-computer, that track and lock enemy ship, and the gunner only have to "target" the enemy ship on his head up display, and the AI or combat computer calcuate angle vector and fire, a cooperation between man and machine. Nobady in there right mind want to have a AI or combat computer that totally independent fire the wepons, especial in a combat situation, full of with decoys and electronic warfare etc Your AI or combat computer might unleash the whole arsenal into a decoy, or fire on a civilian ship becuse it did not have a frendly military transponder, by mistake. The Death Blossom is a tactic of last resort, it allow the AI or combat compute to operate independent, and fire at all threat, the AI or combat compute did not "miss" it beleved the heat trail or space scrap WAS a threat and engage it....

I agree with your analysis of the superior nature of the Gunstar with its 360 degree firing spread. This seemed to lend itself to unique tactics in formations. By linking the Gunstars, each craft could cover a particular quadrant of space, allowing them to concentrate on a smaller area but with greater effect. Placing them in ball formations of maybe 6 would allow them to look out and fire in all directions while covering each others flanks. This ball formation could be scaled up or down as necessary. My biggest problem with the design (from a fans head cannon perspective) was why put the Starfigher in the front? With the HUD he could only look in one direction and could see "through" the ship, why not put him in the back and allow the pilot, who would need to see what is going on around him, in the front?

Been a long time since I saw this old gem. Looking at it now, I realize there are a number of similar design aspects between a Gunstar and a Starfury. I wonder if that was an intentional nod from the people working on Bab 5, or just a testament to the the fundamental design of a realistic space fighter. The Starfury itself had the design purchased by NASA for future potential development. I doubt they plan to use it for space combat of course. But it's the engines and navigational thruster configuration that make it such a good potential real life design. It would be fantastic for a one man short duration mission frame.

Gunstar minus the death blossom was designed as a multi role craft. Heavy enough to take multiple hard hits against craft heavier than itself and still maintain superiority over faster lighter fighters. If not for being the only one left, I can see 10 such craft easily handling the single armada in a open attack without the tactic of hiding in a asteroid. One armada, being what was depicted in the movie of one command ship and its complement of fighters with control hub intact. The Star League was out gunned due to numerical superiority and the hive like attack patterns the fighters used otherwise in a one gunstar to command ship fight, it was an even fight despite size and armament differences.

Honestly, reminds me of a Boulton Paul Defiant turret fighter from the second world war era. It relied on a gun turret to shoot down bombers and fighters. Unfortunately, this concept didn't work beyond well once World War 2 began. They were excellent at shooting down bombers, but their increased wight made them vulnerable to the German single seat BF 109.

the Death Blossom modification was, admitted in the movie, a weapon of last resort, so essentially dumbfiring at every direction to clear the way for evasion and escape.
