The problem is money! The bigger the purse and the more mfg/sponser get involved, the more the "professionalized" the sport will become. Such is the history of sports ever since George Steinbrenner bought the NY Yankees.

After hearing last year about what a great race Unbound was because everyone worked as hard as they could, I knew that people would be upset when tactics began to come into play. Big money will lead to big, organized teams.

The “spirit” of gravel may be long dead for the pros. But for us amateurs it feels alive and well. I had a blast doing Unbound 200 this year. I’ve met so many awesome people mid-race from around the US and the world the last three times I’ve done it. It’s so awesome sharing such a challenging, emotional rollercoaster of experience with random strangers with a similar mindset and goal. And honestly the best part is just seeing people finish regardless of their times. 202 miles with 11,000 of climbing through some of the gnarliest terrain seems like such a daunting task for any amateur. But to see people of all ages, athletic abilities, and different walks of life follow through with such a challenge is truly inspirational.

@@gcn Funny that. I did the 25. The 25 was 26.6. First, I forgot to start my Wahoo, then I got off course (me and Lachlan have something in common). So Strava says I rode 30.3, but I really rode 32. I was 20th at the checkpoint but the detour and time standing around getting un-lost resulted in finishing 209th. I had a blast. Not bad for 340 days out from a total hip replacement, eh? Next year I'll do the 50. Thanks for being GCN, GCN.

The hilarious thing about construction vehicles though, is that on-site they have to drive at minimal speeds, have some sort of hazard warning lights, and with someone in high-vis guiding them to keep the other workers safe within the site. Once out of the site? “Low visibility” (poor excuse for bad design), national speed limit, no marshalling, no hazard warning lights.

I remember when David Zabriskie turned up to a Vuelta a España etape, wearing a skinsuit, planning to go in the break of the day. This was very unusual at the time, and he was roasted by his colleagues at the start line. None the less, he ended up winning after a solo break, lasting the entire stage. To the best of my recollection, a very young Valverde crashed during the stage, and because Valverde was wearing the leader jersey (golden?), the peloton slowed down, thus making Zabriskie's madnees project actually pan out! So I guess you can say, David Zabriskie ruined gravel 20 years ago?

The area Morton was training in (one of the areas I train in), is remote and full of adventure. It's all old ghost towns and old roads used in gold mining, and it is an amazing adventure. You can't really understand what it is, unless you ride it. That he may have done intervals out there, doesn't belie his suggestion that he was primarily riding for fun. That area is made for long, fun (as long as steep elevation is fun for you) rides.

13:32 When I coached high school tennis (bear with me here; this will make sense), our athletic director told the coaches that “bigs take care of the littles” meaning that the coaches look out for the more senior tennis players and the more senior tennis players look out for the younger players, both in sport and socially at school. I do apply that when I’m driving, that the “bigs” (e.g., motor vehicle drivers) look out for the “littles” (e.g., pedestrians, cyclists). A vehicle is a tool that can become a weapon (intentional or not) that can inflict incredible harm, including death, to those literally smaller than them and that when you’re behind the wheel, you have a responsibility and an obligation to look out for anyone that you share the road with. Period. Everyone has someone to go home to, someone who would miss them dearly if something were to happen to them.

Last year, as a 61 year old guy, I rode over 3,000 miles, and on pace for 4,000 this year. I live out in the country, and ride 98% of my rides solo. I also do not like hearing other people's music. I never even carry it if I am riding with somebody else. Also, I would never wear earbuds on the road. I also never turn it on until the back 50% of my ride. I watched a highlight video for Unbound 2024 that featured a bunch of pre- and post-race interviews with top riders. What struck me was how incredibly technical all the interviews were and how focused they were on marginal gains to the ends of WINNING. Gravel events used to be about RIDING -- just having fun. With money, sponsorship, more visibility, it has inevitably become more commercial, and now it is a bifurcated field: those who want to WIN, and those who just want to finish and post their jersey number on their wall.

I'm a cyclist that comes from a family of truck drivers. I do agree drivers are the biggest problem in the debate of safety on the roads. You only need one driver in 50 to be bad for all cyclists to be in danger. That said, I see some cyclists that complain about drivers when they are "not smart". If a cyclist doesn't understand (and act accordingly) that a driver has blind spots, blame can be put on the cyclist sometimes. Funny you followed up that story with the pacific coast highway PCH. I live near the PCH and avoid it as best as I can. If you are a cyclist complaining about drivers AND cycling on the PCH commonly. I question your ability to use your brain. Avoid the PCH unless absolutely needed!

@BoyMeetsMountain
@BoyMeetsMountain 26 күн бұрын
@@gcn We probably will, but 100% agree that "teams" domestiques will "ruin" gravel. Not that it'll really be ruined, it'll just continue to become less accessible. People left road for gravel because, pro or not, its effectively a single-person sport, away from large teams. Then we slowly see pro women drafting the men, domestiques, etc etc. So we just recreated the process all over again, just dirtier (physically). I actually think MOST of us are excited, not disturbed, by the tech. We all want to go faster, but we all want our shot to prove our mettle, and the more teams take over, the more that dream (somehow being the nobody who comes out of the dust victorious against all the sponsored or pro riders) dies for the "average" fast guy. We will never make a world tour team, but with Gravel races, there IS a chance (albeit minscule) that you can pull off a once in a lifetime thing. Thats certainly my dream, and what i work for. The splitting of "pro" vs "joe" starts was the beginning of that, though i think we understand it for safety reasons to a certain extent.

The Spirit of Gravel is alive and well. It's not at the pointy end of the elite groups. It's in the mass of participants who are there to give the best of what they have on that day. The battle is with the course, rather than with our fellow riders. I actually drove 1000 hoping to see Keegen race Matej. It was thrilling, I saw the racers at the start, 3 spots on course, & the finish. It was excellent to see in person & for the first time I caught the spirit. It was so great to be able to see Lachlan out on course winning. I just listened to his post race interview on King of the Ride & he does talk about his coach & other things that helped him, but I think he just draws the line on stuff that makes him unhappy on the bike. He said he had to walk back from a couple rabbit holes that made his world tour racing miserable. As an American fan, not racer, I love Europeans coming over. I love the sport getting bigger. I love better coverage. It’s a rare thing to be proud of something in American cycling right now, but gravel is a beautiful thing here. Also gravel is safer than being on roads with crashes. Keegen does essentially have a domestique in the form of teammate Tobin who did a sprint lead out for him at Leadville last year when he obliterated the record. This year Tobin outright said because he’s not in the lifetime series this year he just rode for Keegen on the front for 100 miles at unbound this year. Keegen apologized to him publicly afterwards, so even with a domestique he couldn’t withstand being the marked man.

The entry fees for the bigger races are getting prohibitive, but there are a plethora of smaller grassroots races available all over the USA. The vibe in Emporia and at almost all of these large races is always a great time. Keep up the great work.

As a truck driver myself and a cyclist. The CPC courses we do . One of them is actually riding a bike through a city and seeing what it's like from a cyclist point of view when a truck comes near . It's a good idea what the construction site is offering . It's worth checking it out . And not ignored. I see it from both point of views Good cyclist bad cyclist Good truck drivers bad truck drivers Works both ways

The part where it is inviting cyclists to see it from a truck drivers point of view isn't victim blaming. It is a great idea, not only for cyclists but car drivers should experience this as well. My reasoning behind this, blind spots for trucks exist and are huge. That is just a fact. Nothing will magically make the blind spot disappear. Just because you might be able to see the mirror does not mean the driver will see you, that's just physics and angles of refraction from the drivers view point. Yes the driver of the vehicle has a responsibility for their driving but you also have a responsibility for your own safety. Don't put yourself in a dangerous position then blame the other person when they can't see you. Also seeing the road from the perspective of a cyclist is part of the HGV continuous driver training courses. CPC. They actually make the drivers cycle in real road conditions. Maybe it would be good if something similar was included in a standard car driving test. Then we would all see road use from other users perspectives.

77 year old here, Sydney & Vietnam cyclist. Confirming previous comment. Back in the 90s, my triathlon club had a traffic policeman come to speak & answer questions one evening. Topics were wide-ranging but in answer to a question about trucks and them drifting over lanes at turns & roundabouts the suggestion was - you've got a responsibility not to place yourself in a dangerous situation. Look into truck's rear-view mirror. If you can't see the driver's eyes then he can't see you. My late father gave me similar advice when I inherited his bike 60+ years ago.

Hi from Germany .... I ordered a jersey and bib shorts from the first edition of the AGU kit. I got an e-mail with a tracking code. After two days I looked it up and to see the paket had reached the Netherlands and thinking that it would be here in a couple of days. After another two days I checked again and it was still in the Netherlands. I contacted the GCN shop with the problem via e-mail, next day a reply came which said that there was a problem and the packet was being sent back to GCN shop. I must prase the correspondence with the GCN shop, they were very helpful with solving the problem and re-sending the package which I recived a couple of days later. (thanks Kate)

Gravel is going the same way Cyclocross went. Cross was originally a bunch of racers with nothing to do in the winter and looking for a way to stay in some shape. Now there are specialists that do cross as their primary, have team support, have all of the pro support and such, etc. I'm expecting gravel to end up with small informal teams of riders that are sherpas to their main rider and we'll end up with more road style tactics. If there are prizes and sponsorships on the line, competition levels go up. Can't really do much about it.

As a truck driver and a cyclist I see both sides of the argument. I drive a 38 ton articulated truck with a 45 ft trailer. My truck is fitted with 6 mirrors, 4 cameras and audible warnings when turning left and I still get cyclist trying to under take me! Also when you go to overtake them on the open road some speed up rather than letting me pass. It takes a lot of time to slow down and speed up when fully loaded so please be aware of this if a lorry try’s to pass you. As a cyclist though I have lost count of how many times I have been cut up by motorist! It’s like you say it’s all about education.

I think we can all agree that gravel is great, isn't it? It's attracting people from all paths of cycling. The best part about it is that its challenging, its rigorous, it is in fact, ruthless. It's inevitable that the more traction it gains, the larger its going to get. However, as an organizer when you can see that your race has gained national attention, teams, large sponsors. It might be time to create categories similar to those of the other orchestrated, professional races.

I think unbound is great live coverage is a challenge without proper distribution, if only there was a global cycling website to host such activity. The next big movement in gravel after more pro teams take a team approach is going to be proper streaming distribution, bringing it to more people and growing the North American version of the sport. It is nice that they get a good race recap with interviews out less than 48hr after the race.
