We celebrate Tolkien Reading Day by looking at the entire life of Faramir - the character which Tolkien once said was most like himself. We cover his life growing up alongside his brother Boromir, rejecting The One Ring, marrying Éowyn, and his later life as Steward of Gondor under King Aragorn. The life of Faramir stands as a testament to the value of wisdom, empathy, and love.

My family has always bugged me about my love for weapons. But I do not love them for the blood and gore that they spill like my family claims. But I did not know for the longest time how to put them into words why I loved them. Part of it is because some of weapons are really cool such as anduril. But once i heard faramir's quote, I knew that he put my feeling into words. Some books or parts of History I do not love what they defend, but this is 100% true with middle earth. " I do not love the bright sword for it's sharpness, nor the arrow for it's swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory, I love only that which they defend"- Faramir, the two towers

As a movie watcher, I think they did justice to the character particularly the extended cuts. Where his brother succumbed to temptation that lead to his doom, the other was willing to come back after realizing his mistake and redeem himself. He was a highly flawed but still a good man deep down which ultimately made for an inspiring character.

Me too. I’ve always admired Aragorn and still do, but I feel like I have more in common with Faramir. I can hold my own in a fight if I have to, but I enjoy the arts and knowledge. There’s that scene that was deleted from the original film but is in the extended version of Faramir and Pippin, where Pippin tells Faramir he has a different kind of strength. It’s a gentle strength, not the swaggering kind that Boromir had and most people interpret as strength. Faramir is often overlooked compared to other male characters in LOTR because he’s not the larger than life figure Aragorn is, and he lacks the etherealness of the elves or the bombastic nature of Gimli, but he’s as rock solid as anybody.

I was more than a little disappointed with the depiction of Faramir in the movies. He didn't treat Gollum harshly. He didn't drag Frodo and Sam towards Minas Tirith. He set them free with food, staves, and sound advice. He was an immense help in the quest to destroy The Ring.
@JorikPar
@JorikPar 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. However, I can absolutely understand that there needed to be a climax in the Frodo story in the second movie and that going for Shelob did not leave enough storyline on Frodo and Sam's journey for the third one. Yet, I love when Sam (or was it Frodo?) says in Osgilith "We should have never come here" (I don't know the exact words in English as I usually watch the German translation). I laugh out loud every single time at that line.

Great video! It's easy to see why Faramir is so beloved of Tolkien fans. I think he is the most relatable character in the books. He is a human character with no predetermined role in life. He wishes only to do good by others and is seemingly incorruptible. Those are high virtues. I imagine we have all, whilst reading the books, imagined how we might avoid the Ring's temptation. Faramir shows that it is possible, but only through his worldview and the vows he has already made.

That’s the one thing I really didn’t like in the films. They didn’t include the scene from the book where Faramir rejects the ring. Ruins the story arc where all the characters that refuse the ring such as Gandalf and Galadriel prosper and those that seek to take it such as Boromir, Denethor and Saruman perish. And if I could be one character in LOTR it would be Faramir. Especially as he finished up marrying Eowyn of Rohan 😍!

Oh man. These character focus videos have been amazing! I’m finally re-reading the trilogy after a decade, having only read it once. It’s great to be feel like I’m not missing anything as I progress through the book. I’ve actually read the Silmarillion three times (plus audiobook once) and am far more familiar with the lore of the 1st age. 2nd gets shaky, but that’s where these videos have also been helpful. Keep up the great work!!!

You did it again! I literally canNOT get enough of your videos. These character complete travels videos are what I live for; highlight of my day, when KZfaq tells me you uploaded a new one. Gollee, man. Well done. Seriously. P.S. Can't wait for that Beleg video ;) Feel free to make that as detailed and a 3-part-er like Morgoth lol

The madness of Denethor chapter is my favourite in LOTR. Tolkein's tradegic/comedic writing is at its best here for me.

Amazing video as always! I would love to see a "what if Faramir went to Rivendell and became part of the fellowship instead of Boromir" video kind of like the "what if Gandalf took the one ring" video. Love your stuff and really appreciate the time and effort you put into your content, keep up the excellent work!

My wife and I love your videos!! We would love to see a video on what would have happened if Faramir had gone to the Council of Elrond instead of Boromir, given that both he and Faramir had the same prophetic dream. And by extension, if anything would have changed if Faramir was a part of the Fellowship instead of Boromir. Thank you!!
