Lilium

5 жыл бұрын

In 2017 we revealed something the world had never seen before, a two-seater, all-electric, jet-powered vertical take-off and landing aircraft.
We're taking it to the next level with the maiden flight of our five-seater prototype. The Lilium Jet takes us another huge step towards making electric regional air mobility a reality.

I believe this aircraft uses grate deal of energy and hence exhausts the battery on take-off and land. So an obvious solution seems to be why not use hard wire electricity to take off and then detach and cruse and as it can hover it can be re-attached to hard wire electricity for landing too. This should allow much longer ranger or increase redundancy factors substantially

When the Lilium was envolving, they maintained high velocity and compact form, which improved from the front of the craft having also wings, but then they tried giving it a luxurious appeal, plus expanding the wing, this made it more of a glider with many small engines, they call it a "jet," it would be impressive if it could reach half a private jets average velocity in horizontal travel.

It doesn’t really need to though. If cost is low enough and it’s minimum twice as fast as driving end to end, I’ll be successful in many markets. The key then will be building convenient inter-city and inner-city infrastructure for these aircraft allowing for passenger ease of travel.

Congrats to the visionary team at Lilium for truly ushering in the next era of travel. Many Vtol concepts out there, from both large companies and small startups all pursue that super sized drone idea, all complete with dangerous high velocity multi exposed rotors, all designs carrying no consideration for safety due to proximity, niether for occupants nor bystanders. The Lilium Jet's simplistic yet brilliantly conceived encased multi turbo fan design eliminates all such concerns even in the event of a major accident. Their design is so safe it allows for close proximity operations even with the aircraft powered up. Its been the one factor that has always stood out for me regarding the Liliums design in contrast to all other concepts out there. With Lilium, upon seeing the design for the first time, it just looks right, correct, and it screams the future. Other Vtol concepts carry with them the look of failure, too complex, half concocted or an accident just waiting to happen. When i first saw Lilium i did think the multiple mini turbo fans to be a bit odd, but when i took the time to consider its functions, how they were being used, the redundancy and obviously the levels of safety, i found myself a bit taken back. How such a simplistic design, almost child-like in concept had not been considered years prior. Its just brilliant. Simple and brilliant. Congrats to Lilium for a job more than well done, groundbreaking. I'll be looking to see the Lilium Jet forfill that Blade Runner dream we've all been waiting for.

@xevious2501
@xevious2501 5 жыл бұрын
@@LosZonga that will all depend on future battery development which is bound to get better and safer. The Lilium has alot going for it, but not to be without criticism, i do think the cabin is rather small, which will not do well for many full size people. Far too many designs even in the exotic car world cater to very small, and excludes larger folks, indeed there is a market their as well. Lilium will fair well in good weather but i wonder how it will hold up in bad conditions. Also, as a business, it will require investors to have patience, because this form of low altitude air travel typical for small light aircraft, is not common for most people. The altitudes lilium will service can be both pleasant and extremely turbulent. Passengers will still have the ability to judge scale and height of their surroundings and it takes some getting use to for those affraid of heights. this is where such automated systems must shine, because as a former cessna trainee, i gota tell ya, you gota have your wits about you when flying in bad turbulence. things can get scary quick. and whatever automated system must be proactive in such situations not reactive. because if its always adjusting itself after an event, it will crash.

@EmperorJuliusCaesar it was stable, the thing went up and down in a controlled manner. Just because it had a little bit of vibration doesn't mean it's not stable. It moved a few cm in total perhaps, super stable. Their control engineers now have data to validate their models and can certainly get it to hover and fly with less small deviations in the future.
@El_Loco
@El_Loco 5 жыл бұрын
imagine that what you are watching is a drone, and it wil match perfectly. it is even more stable than a regular helicopter (note that it takes off in an almost rectilinear fashion, while a regular helicopter kind of wobbles around way more while reaching its flying altitude), due to having several rotors propelling it upwards instead of just one. it shakes during the vertical takeoff (that is a given to keep the cabin stabilized) and then performs like a small jet airplane. that is the innovation, that it does not need a runway, and also can reach high speeds very quickly due to using jet propeller fans to move at higher altitudes instead of just relying on the rotors that propel it upwards . those jet propellers are also used by some helicopters to reach higher speeds, but the point of this machine is to rely completely on the jet propulsion and the fixed wings to keep altitude while flying, like a normal plane would, instead of flying all of the time in the fashion a helicopter (or more precisely, a regular 4 rotor drone) would, which is by propelling solely using the rotors. i guess it can do so, fly like a drone, but why would it do that for long distances if it can save energy and go faster by using its wings? my best guess is that it can be used to fly like a drone with its rotors for long distances in a fairly stable manner, but that such flying fashion would be reserveded for small distances (a block or a street) to save energy, while it can jet propel longer distances (i guess from an entire neigborhood to the entirety of the duration of the batteries, which i imagine can range from the ratio of a large city to the distance between two cities) to travel faster, more stable, and with less energy consumption

It is so frustrating to see that the internet is full of experts rating almost everything and broadcasting their opinion. Between a drone and a taxi is a very big difference. I would say if they can prove to reach 300km distance with 4 persons on board in 1-1.5 hour flight duration then this is science fiction becoming reality. All this only with batteries - quite impressing. I assume this will take again 5-10 years of further testing and r&d and the real challenge will be to develop how all these drones could be managed and guided in the air to prevent crashes. The drone pilots of today are already out of control. However a great start and I am surprised this is already so close, closer than self-driving cars on our streets.

I am amazed at the amount of money obviously being invested at Lilium. Just look at all those employees, and still there is not a product to sell. My question would be, "Are you expecting a revolution in battery development?" Because a 5-seater with VTOL capabilities is going to need a whole lot of power. Today's batteries are not at the point where they could provide that power, for any sustained period of time. The investors must either know what battery technology is coming, or they are just wildly speculating.
