@@MichaelNROH That's good to hear, when China starts on something major they usually get it done which could be a huge boon for Linux overall. I doubt it will be "Enforced" unless the West ban windows or Mac OS from being used in China, although it could be shipped with computers in China as standard. Maybe a partnership with Lenovo. I was pretty bummed to learn that Bungie is downright hostile to the mere idea of supporting Proton. You're absolutely right, there is no other game like it on the market right now It's not getting the support it deserves, though, since Bungie gutted the team in favor of their questionable Marathon revival. Not to mention all the layoffs. So while I do still miss the game, I'm not that broken up about it. On the other hand, I am super stoked to be using Linux for my second straight year. I'm loving all the recent Wayland developments - the only thing I'm still missing is global shortcuts.

Between their hostility to linux, and the hostility to their own user base; removing content, excusing it as a "need to advance the plot" when it was a need due to lack of optimization in console due to long ass loading screens that could take over 15 minutes, i personally dropped the game after the first season pass, when they started announcing the cut's in content, I put 80$ on this game between base game and the first 3 expansions and the first season pass with the forges, worst investment of my life, i ended up switching to Warframe and Path of Exile to satiate my thirst for looters.

unless you are using a very niche distro, you should be able to set global keybinds. I'm no way an expert, but gnome, and I presume, kde both have them, and as I understand it a bunch of the window managers are reliant on them.

I swapped recently to linux mint which I try to daily drive. The games I currently play will be the last ones on Windows. I started playing RDR2 on Linux a few days ago and i am still surprised on how well it went, even with the Rockstar Launcher (well the Captcha were the most pain I had to go through). It was just press install in Steam and then it went fine, the only thing i had to do was stop the DirectX install script per kill command after a few minutes. I hope for a prosperous future for linux.

I still don't understand why Wayland lacks so many essential features at this point. It started more than a decade ago, and it was not the first system (i.e., it had many competitors to learn from). Yet, fractional scaling seems to be added only a year ago, still doesn't have always-on-top or window positioning, which all other desktop OS's have. Security? Then why can't those be per-app user permission (i.e., the user can allow certain apps to use window positioning)?
@typingcat
@typingcat 5 ай бұрын
@@__Watcher___ Even Gnome Wayland has always-on-top, but this doesn't matter, because it is not a Wayland standard, and I guess KDE's one is also not standard. This means that apps cannot have native always-on-top menu, unlike Windows, and the user must invoke the OS's menu like pressing some special shortcut or clicking non-client area of the window. This is NOT what I want.

Hi Michael, I'm new to your channel (this is your first video I've just watched). I'm also excited about Linux, just installed Fedora a few days ago on my desktop to give Windows a break, and I'm liking it so far. I'm trying to enhance my productivity by also staying away from games and VR, since they've been quite addictive for me. So, I'm in no hurry to have games running on Linux, that "bug" is actually a feature haha 😂 In any case, I noticed your speaking cadence is a bit repetitive, a few times being refreshingly broken when you adopt a more melodic or natural entonation. Maybe it's something from your culture or upbringing, but I'm no speech expert. I humbly suggest you try to keep it a bit less predictable, maybe pausing or emphasizing random words, if you watch back this video maybe you'll notice what I'm referring to. I hope you find this feedback helpful and not at all a hateful criticism. Thank you!

I could see ChromeOS be a major push if it actually moves to Wayland and thereby can actually use the various Linux applications (maybe even have flatpack support), hopefully also supports Proton for better gaming compatibility. It is very few who would bother installing their own OS where most people just use what they get with their device. Maybe Valve will also release more Steam OS hardware like TV console that could also be a push towards more Linux adoption. Steam OS 3 being available to other handhelds/PCs could also help. Sadly I do see lots of people who would rather bypass Windows 11 requirements than installing Linux. If you are technically enough to bypass Windows 11 requirements you are also technical enough to install Linux.

I used both Gnome and KDE Plasma, each with months worth of usage. Gnome is like: Understand me and get used to my workflow. KDE Plasma is more like: Customize your workflow. Plus the Windows-like advantage out of the box for KDE Plasma. Both are fantastic desktop environments. Only issue I have with KDE Plasma on Wayland is the randomly freezing taskbar, making the icons to stop functioning properly, a logout-log back in fix the problem temporarily.

I started with the Steam Deck, liked the desktop mode. Put Manjaro on my personal laptop and haven't looked back. It just feels like I own my stuff, not that a decision by a company can break it suddenly. Sure, maybe an update does, but that's why I use Manjaro, it's frequently behind the cutting edge and that feels fine. And since it's Arch I can manually go get the bleeding edge if I feel it's compatible. I'm never going back.

Nice summary. As for SteamOS, it still is immature right now. The most severe issues I know about are: - You can't freely install it on any device. - The only devices that somewhat work are Zen 2 Ryzen + RDNA 2 - Single Profile Setup - We need support for multiple players and multiple desktop users, including an easy reset / clean for them. - Missing ability to install essentially anything for specific profiles, while protecting / hardening the root / initial one. An idea would be chroot-ing into a fusionfs mirror. - Missing foreign OS support without having to remove SteamOS. - There should be no partitioning, especially not one using ZFS. It only reduces available diskspace, increases the risk of bricking the system, and introduces incompatibilities. Additional partitions might make sense for going exFat on game data shared between multiple OS only. - Advanced I/O setup, to configure the OS for different input devices the original deck doesn't have ( or are somewhat different there ). - Currently, only one desktop is supported. - Currently, only deck- and desktop mode do exists, whereas there also should be: Stationary console mode, multi-media center mode, (Game-)Launcher mode, ... . - Many titles hardwire specific "720p Deck" settings, enforcing them if SteamOS is detected. - Finding the right graphics settings for your specific hardware may proof tedious, which is why there should be an assistant type experience based database to help out. - There should be a docking-option to centralize and synchronize both gaming and user(-profile) data against a NAS or online provider. As it stands, using multiple SteamOS devices in a household would only somewhat work if they were all registered to the same user, and even then only for game (related) data. This is why currently, your best bet for a Linux based gaming system would be a fresh install with a current universal desktop distribution like "Linux Mint" while simply relying on Steam, or pick one of the elective gaming centered ones like "Garuda", whilst leaving SteamOS for the Deck and things like HoloISO or ChimerasOS to enthusiasts for now.

I was running Ubuntu many years ago, had started learning Bash shell, but ended up going back to Windows 7, then 10. I have a huge Steam library, and piles of emulators for retro gaming. Also have piles of pro level music software (Cuebase, Live, Native Instruments Kore complete ultimate, Loom, V-Metal, etc etc etc) but missed the tinkering and want to get back into programming (Python/C++). At the time, I didnt want to sink as much time into Linux as I needes to, despite enjoying tinkering. I have downloaded Linux Mint, not tried installing yet, have been putting together all my emulators/roms in Launchbox/Big Box. Proton/Wine seems promising for running my games and my music software. If Linux will do everything I want and need it to do, screw Microsoft. I have a Focusrite Scarlet 18i20 (dont remember generation, might br 2nd), Presonus Faderport 8, Kawai VPC1, M Audio code 61. Seems like Linux has come so far with Proton and new support for hardware, if it does what I need it to do, bye bye Microsoft.

one solution for your Destiny addiction might be using a qemu VM with a windows guest, and PCI passthrough for the GPU. I have a windows 10 VM that I use exclusively for gaming that has been heavily de-bloated and had all updates disabled - it lives behind the linux host as a firewall and only accesses the game servers so security issues are unlikely. PCI passthrough means the game is running in native windows with windows GPU drivers on my second monitor, with 0 latency overhead, and the linux desktop is still accessible on the first monitor, with direct recording of the windows screen and audio in linux OBS through Looking-Glass. The only hardware requirement to be able to do this is either an iGPU in the CPU or a second GPU that linux can use while the main GPU is passed into the windows VM. The way PCI passthrough works now (6.2 kernel) is that the main GPU is fully accessible and usable by the linux OS until PCI passthrough is activated, at which point the linux driver is unloaded, virtio-pci takes over and gives it to windows until the VM shuts down, at which point the linux driver takes over again (amdgpu). I don't know how this is with wayland, but with X11 the driver loads but cannot reintegrate the screen into the desktop until a logout/login, although I believe other features of the GPU (like encode/compute/render accel.) become available again. There are tricks to get around an anti-cheat or GPU driver's insistence that VM's are not allowed as well. (hide hypervisor & change BIOS name in registry worked for me).

Really enjoy your videos. I think Linux has become amazing. I built my parents a new desktop for Xmas and installed Linux Mint Cinnamon over Windows, assuming after a few days I'd get a phone call asking me to switch back to Windows. But no, they seem to really like it. My only issue, which you pointed out, has been some issues with gaming. Drivers and performance, including certain titles that just do not run on the OS, is an issue. Therefore on my gaming rig I still run Windows, but for every other computer I own it's all Linux. I'm hoping you're right about 2024. Windows just has such a huge monopoly that many people don't even know Linux exists, and is free, and doesn't collect your data, and is generally more secure in terms of virus and malware attacks, could go on and on. So many people are just completely unaware that this is an option and I hope that changes. I look forward to the day that you can buy a laptop or desktop and have the option to select Linux at checkout. Happy New Year's Mr. Horn! Cheers.

I build performance desktops for a living, both for commercial business and custom ordering for gamers and graphic designers at university). I remember running some Gnome back in college to play some pranks, but that's it. So I can't really debate anything, nor would I want to. My comment was just meant to show support for Linux and to signal I'm on the bandwagon now and brought my family along. I can't believe how much better Linux has gotten over the past 10-12 years, it's unreal from what I recall. And to thank Mr. Horn for his videos. Cinnamon is a really good DE on its own. Easy navigation, easy settings, and it looks familiar. The issue that I have with Cinnamon personally is, that feels less modern and slow out of the box. I think almost everyone expected Stadia to shut down the second it was announced. PlayStation Plus cloud has Destiny 2. You have to run the Windows app under Proton, but apparently it does work. Though their streaming in general I'm told leaves a lot to be desired performance wise. The irony is Stadia ran off Debian. So it's just the anti-cheat Bungie is being petty about. Doesn't affect me since I don't play any online multiplayer titles. But you do still have to dual boot for fringe cases like these. Some folks use VMs with GPU passthrough, but IDK if the anti-cheat stuff always plays nice with those.

The AI question is really interesting. I agree it's a TBD. A lot of AI stuff is in the cloud (run by Linux?) but will it be more local in the future? Will people want that? If so, presumably Linux being uned for cloud AI will be a good basis for desktop AI too, if there is demand. 7:59

The tricky part of local AI is, that the more it learns, the more storage you need. In a way, AI can only get as good since you are either hardware limited, or it needs to forget things in order to learn new stuff.

I've been linux user on and off since Ubuntu 8.04 came out, so that would mean almost 16 years. To be honest, I'm sick of all of the BS that comes with windows. From updates that render your machine inoperable for hours with a chance to completely break your install and lose all the data to stupid decisions like shutdown that is ACTUALLY a 'clever' hybernation, to it placing it's bootloader on a random drive instead of an SSD it is installed on, to same setting being present in 3 separate places with very unclear override behavior between them. I'm done. The only two reasons I still only have Windows on my home PC are: 1. I'm lazy and the prospect of spending days moving data and reinstalling games and software is very daunting. So I'll wait till I finally build a new PC. 2. I'm a photographer and there are no good alternatives to Capture One on Linux, so I have to have either a Win or a Mac PC. I really don't wanna mess with VMs and PCI-passthrough. On my trusty thinkpad I'm happily using Archcraft with bspwm. It's so nice to have full control over my system with an added bonus of considerably lower memory footprint.

At this point, the only way your game won't run on Linux is if you deliberately break it to not function on it. Proton is near-indistinguishable from Windows unless there's intentional anti-cheat breaking it.
@sbrblz

That's not entirely true, there's many cases of new proton versions breaking games or running worse, making people have to constantly hunt for the best version. Not to mention games that are updated also require constant proton fixes. In my case on the steam deck the newest version 8.x proton increased cpu temps in a game by almost 20 degrees Celsius, had to roll back to a 7.x release as per protondb recommendations to get back to normal.
