Hisuian Decidueye looks like an Anime protagonist that just witnessed its entire family get murdered and is about to set out on a quest to avenge them.

You didn’t mention Typhlosion’s signature move, Infernal Parade! As in the Night Parade of 100 Yokai! I always name my Hisui Typhlosion Nurarihyon because of it.

Hisuian Decidueye having autumn colors, instead of the normal green aesthetic grass-starters usually have, is more badass than it has any right to be.

I might have realized something A ronin comes about when a samurai doesn’t commit suppuku. A ronin is a samurai that’s supposed to be dead, but isn’t. Hisuian decidueye is a Pokémon that’s supposed to be ghost type, but isn’t.

I personally love the Hisuian Typhlosion the most. The face just says to me "I've got a secret that I'll share with you one day."

Few other things, samurai were known for their sword play but primarily relied on archery, hence why we got decidueye. Also since Samurott is a dark type I feel that it is the ronin of the trio and decidueye is the honorable samurai.

Typhlosion might have been picked because of its Volcano inspiration rather than its animal basis (the Cyndaquil lines draws from multiple species and Typhlosion is called the Volcano Pokemon), as a refence to Ushishir, volcanic islands that were considered a sacred area to the Ainu. Hisuian Typhlosion even gets its powers from Mt Coronet's spiritual energy.

I actually didn't realize you didn't do the Hisuian starters final evolutions I could've sworn you did.

So the connection for Typhlosion is that there are badger yokai called Mujina (it's often interchangeably used to describe tanuki in many areas) and animal yokai such as kitsune, Tanuki and Mujina are associated with ghostly fire and these phenomena are called kitsunebi and tanukibi, hence Typlosion is an appropriate being a fire type and given ghost type. You can extend this to Oshowatt as there are otter yokai called Kawauso but their pranks are alot more nefarious than tanuki. And Dicidueye may also draw inspiration from Tengu who are depicted as long nosed hermits or monks but often are given avian features such as a beak

It’s so cool that Samurott was based on Nobunaga, because, coincidentally, I named mine Nobunagua, making a pun with the word “água” (meaning “water” in Portuguese). 😁

Also, H. Samurott being dark-type could be connected to the move Night Slash, since the japanese name of the move, Tsujigiri, references the habit of some samurai of attacking random people in the middle of the night, for no other reason than to test their blade or for fun

Honestly the pokemon conquest section made me think of how cool an idea of explaining why the warlords perfect link pokemon are what they are (that and I'm just hoping for pokemon conquest 2 one day)

I love the Decidueye take.. I named my shiny "Ghillie" thinking it looked like an owl covered in a ghillie suit. Ties in nicely with your take on the ronin outfits.

It's probably also worth noting that being a ronin, Hisuian Decidueye is very specifically NOT a Ghost-type anymore. As in, it REFUSED to commit... er... sudoku. It's gone native, as it were, embracing the land of Hisui as its protector, embodying the ideals of Cikap-Kamuy. Meanwhile, Samurott has fully embraced its role as a conqueror, embodying the ideals of Oda Nobunaga. Decidueye is Hisui's protector, Fighting and Grass, the perfect counter to Hisui's conqueror, the Dark and Water Samurott.

I thought Nobunaga's moniker of "Demon King" was his tongue & cheek rebuttable to Takeda Shingen addressing himself as a "protector god", his way of saying 'anyone can call themselves anything, as example'

There is more to Oda Nobunaga and why he did the things he did, also his title of the demon king of the 6th heaven, is something he named himself. It was to mock one of his enemies who called them self the the friend of Buddhism or something along those lines.

Typhlosion was originally my favorite Starter, and after PLA, Hisuian Typhlosion took its spot! I love the design and typing, and I think it just looks uber cute. Even if you couldn't find much for it, it actually cemented my love for the ghostly badger even more. Great video as always! ^^

Heyyy, fabulous work, whoever did the research here! It's so hard to find decent sources for "Ezo" related material let alone anything Ainu. (Spotted some holes and inaccuracies though, would recommend redoing this one someday. 👌) Having had to trawl over this material myself, let me offer some additional details!: Hisuian Typhlosion's animal species intrigue has more to do with the Japanese term mujina. While it now means the badger as a species, it means "hole bear", which was historically used interchangeably with bears by hunters (traditional, Wajin), especially when bears were hibernating. The Ainu culture has a deep connection with bears. While we do have another bear poke already, hibernating bear dens were an important find for an Ainu hunter to mark for later, because taking young cubs into their (coughcough *hearth* & home, and) village was an integral part of their iomante tradition. The spirituality of which lends ties to Spiritomb again, but its referencing Ainu religion this time. But yeah, the holebear cub, now grown, is (💀) 'sent' back to the spiritual realm, to deliver a message of good tidings, and relevant here: the generous hospitality of the humans. (Which is relevant to the Traveler motif, but I'll expand on that below.) (tl;dr Read more about the spiritual aspects of the Iomante ceremony for details. Though there are many Ainu stories of bears Ursaluna could claim, the role of the Iomante'd Bear works perfectly with our Spiritomby HTyphlosion. lol) Also, its reported that many Ainu shamans were traditionally women. *But it wasn't gender locked traditionally either, according to the interviewee. But yeah the "jovial foreign traveler" / (Historically a slur don't use this for the people or culture.)"Gypsy" motif works with the Yokai Night Parade theme of HTyphlosion's signature attack, as well as well as the (plural as it is a large branching cultural group all over the world now)Roma people's origins in ancient India. With which, Laventon seems to perhaps be a gentleman from (time period accurate)British Colonized India. Also, a minor correction. Your statement about their main owl kamuy is correct, but it has a very specific connotation to be the protector (kamuy) of the kotan. The village. I'd also suggest you look into their stories and yukar that reference the other owl kamuy. There's some looser connections there. Anyway, their owl kamuy (ig / some in particular), are tied to leading hunters to their game, or away from danger. So Hisuian Decidueye isn't just a lone ronin. He found a home to protect, and has been adopted by them. *Sources suggest that aside from the historical tensions against the colonizer groups, Ainu didn't see much of an issue with accepting other people into their culture/community. When an ethnographer asked about this, I remember reading that the Traditional Ainu person simply replied, that they consider all people "humans", and so welcomed them. Lemme bookend this research-spiel with a funny: Otters were considered by the Ainu to have the shortest attention spans of any creature. There is even a myth about it. To the point where, one isn't to eat (I think it might be certain ?) parts of the otter, lest you acquire the same fate! lol

Hisuian Typlosions ghost type might have some more inspiration from the Japanese badger than you think, as the Japanese badger (or Mujina as they're called) is also often depicted as a yōkai

Honestly I like Hisuian Typhlosion. that was my first immediate choice for the starters. i also found it cool that all three of them had something to match the specialist of the type they gained. Typhlosion, Johto, Morty's Scarf has the same colors. Samurott, Unova, Grimsley's outfit. And then Decidueye, Alola, Hala's Hair.

There's quite a lot of characters that have strong connections to Oda Nobunaga, like Ode Iou, Masayoshi Shido, and Ragyo Kiryuin, just off the top of my head - all fixated on domination. So yeah, Dark-type fits like a glove.

While the design isnt drastic I love hisui an Samurott. I always loved the base form and it gaining the dark types was unexpected.

Imagine if we got BDSP after Legends and if you leveled up Dartrix, Quilava, and Dewott in the Grand Underground, you got the Hisuian forms of their evolutions. Hell imagine if many Hisuian forms were exclusive to the Grand Underground. It would’ve been so cool if Ash had been sent to Hisui and his Rowlet, Quilava, and Oshawott came along with him and evolved to these Hisuian forms. I mean Goh got the Galar starters, might as well give Ash the other sets of starters.

Between the starters (ignoring type change), Decidueye really changed the least & Typhlosion the most. Most common conceptions to ronin attire with Decidueye's look is more with sword samurai & less with archers; plus battle style remains same as Decidueye is still an archer & its kicks are still prominent. Typhlosion became a psychopomp spirit guide rather than its wildfire type self. And Samurott still remains basically the same but IT becomes more of a ronin samurai

Ronin are kind of the cowboys of Japan. Thats one reason they are pretty popular. Heck westerns are still liked in this time. Along with various ronin types of stories. So having an owl ronin as your partner is awesome. Also, given the tales of Ranmaru Mori, that is accurate when talking about Nobunaga.

Hisuian Samurott and Typhlosion are amazing in my opinion My favorite is Samurott but I love Typhlosion's mysterious and cunning energy like a scheming vizier specially with how the flames around the neck look like an extravagant collar

An interesting interpretation of the three forms is related to the different ways animals evolve and adapt to environments they are not native to. After being introduced artificially they can either: 1) adapt to survive in the new environment, changing to better suit the environmental pressures of the place. H-Decidueye shows this, adapting to be better protected from the harsh cold climate of hisui. 2) take over the new environment as an invasive species, causing damages to the habitat. H-Samurott represents this by having little to no changes in look and becoming a dark type, which represents it's negative impact on the ecosystem 3) fail to adapt, which leads the indtroduced species to extintion. This explains H-Typhlosion ghost typing: it just couldn't survive in hisui and become a ghost type. It also makes sense given the lack of badgers in Okkaido which may be interpreted as it being harder for them to survive there

I chose Rowlet in PLA man I made a good choice! Just as I did in Pokemon Sun: Hisuin Decidueye is such a good attacker in PLA not to mention Grass/Fighting type getting more love is nice to see! If we get anymore Legends games I want see Totodile get this treatment and Turtwig.

I associated Hisuian Samurott with the Republic of Ezo (A republic founded in Hokkaido by rebels of the Boshin war) whose elected president was a Samurai+Admiral. Imagine an Admiral of the japanese Navy betraying his emperor and establishing his own Country in Hokkaido.

What I always wanted to see from a Legends Arceus anime was ash getting sent back in time after the events of the Pokemon Master anime while he had Quilava, Oshawott, and Rowlett on his team and the shenanigans of Legends arceus goes down but it results in the hisuian final evos. of course our boi ash is retired but the fact he has the 3 starters and ash has a record of being sent back in time means if the Pokemon Company wanted to return to Ash after the Horizons anime that would be an awesome place to go to.

Typhlosion definitely had a lot more going on then that. The March of 100 Yokai and it signature move could have given just a little more substance but regardless it my favorite starter. I like the zen Badger that guides the souls of the dead.

I think I found the inspiration of the whole Ogrepon storyline. Apparently the town was following the popular Japanese myth of Momotaro. Now the whole masks thing kinda feel a little lazy since it was said Momotaro and his friends defeated multiple oni….

missed oppertunity to say that Decidueye didn't commit "Avatar Fire Prince".

Maybe because badgers aren't found in Hokkaido is why they chose Typhlosion to be the ghost type. I don't know if Hokkaido had badgers and they went extinct there or maybe because they didn't know much about badgers so they were spooky and mysterious. Those are my best guesses.

It's really cool to learn that all 3 of the Hisui Starters have potential ties to major aspects of Ainu culture, not just Japanese culture in general. On Nobunaga, as far as I'm aware, his reason for disliking Buddhism wasn't just because they preached pacifism, I mean, in that case, the Christians he bought his guns from should've rubbed him the wrong way just the same with all the missionaries they brought along. It's also because most of his early losses are appearently to legions of buddhist warrior monks that allied with his opponents... and at least the first temple he burned was due to a group of those same warrior monks fortifying in said temple since they're supposed to be neutral ground, it's easy to see how he'd have enough of their shenanigans at this point and just ignore convention. Also, I'm pretty sure the place Nobunaga died at, Honnoji, was also a temple, ironically he wasn't there to burn it... presumably... but it was stll burned down when Nobunaga was betrayed, although I don't believe there's a consensus regarding wether it was put on fire by Nobunaga as a sort of final f you or by the guy who betrayed him, the entire thing in general has a few narratives surrounding it. For Typhlosion, I also always assumed it being based on Japanese Onmyouji, Shinto spellcasters or exorcists, the 108 spirits it employs would specifically resemble the 108 bead prayer necklace that'd probably find use in their rituals, although the connection to the Fire Kamuy seems 100 times stronger, learning about that. Although also in regards to badgers and Ainu, even though they can't be found on Hokkaido natively, as far as I'm aware the Ainu people of Japan used to populate a good bit of the eastern half of the Japanese mainland as well, but as the first Japanese kingdoms expanded, they were eventually conquered, with the Ainu people who used to settle eastern Japan either being integrated into Japanese society, I remember hearing that most modern Japanese people have at least partial Ainu heritage in their DNA, and it's also theorized that Ainu believes at least influenced some aspects of Shintoism, as well as possibly some of the first Samurai families being Ainu-families that were integrated, or they fled and migrated to Hokkaido... which would then mean that those people that used to live in eastern Japan should have legends involving badgers. Of course, due to the nature of Ainu culture, being transferred by word afaik, those legends simply might not've survived those 1000+ years into modern day, SINCE there were no badgers on Hokkaido, but there realistically still should've been Ainu tales about badgers that were told at least for some time on Hokkaido as well.

I just got my copy New years day 2023, and I could not decide between Oshawott and Cyndaquil- not really an owl person, I liked Litten and Popplio more. (But Hisuian Deducieye is growing on me thanks to your video- and I just caught an Alpha in a rift the other night!) I picked Cyndaquil because Quilava is a favorite 2nd stage, Dewott being up there as well! Also, I knew what their Hisuian forms looked like, and Typhlosion caught my eye more. It's just so chill! And the purifying spirits thing is also really cool! I don't really like "evil" characters, but like A LOT of Dark types, but Hisuian Samurott looked neat. I WAS gonna do another play through- if I could get another copy/move my mons- though LA is my first Pokémon Switch game, so that's on hold. -With Oshawott instead of Cyndaquil. (I like a static game to keep progress, and one to reset for the music/story, did that with Explorers of Sky before DS Pokémon games had a price hike because of Covid.) I wanna keep my boy "Mike", my Hisuian Typhlosion, maybe trade over what I don't have so I have all three before completing the main story quest. Also, I took the Harry Potter quiz, and it said I was a Hufflepuff, and I'm an Aries, which is a Fire sign. Sooo Fire badger who helps lost souls, very heroic in its own light- how could I not love Hisuian Typhlosion! Hisuian Samurott is still kind cool looking, but the more dastardly references have me sliding to Deducieye, and sticking with Typhlosion. I like heroes, and grew up with Samurai Jack- to an extent, so for there to be a mon that's like him, so loyaly, and good natured, what's not to love?! Though, who says you have to be " bad"? You could raise your Samurott in a good way like Ash does, and it could be fine, just like any other mon, no thirst for power. I mean there's a rescue/exploration team consisting of a trio of Poochyena. They don't have to be bad, they're actually actively helping take criminals down, especially since they seem to prefer the outlaw board to the other board. And Murkrow/Shuppet's team is just a regular team of explorers, they just like the shiny stuff, so not bad, despite being "Dark." Heck, maybe if someone had gotten to "Ghetsis's" Hydreigon before all the torture, he could've been a happy, "normal", well adjusted mon. Also Prince Zuko from Avatar the last Airbender- came from a bad place, and did some wrong things, but became good in the end. Oh, and Max's Poochyena, timid, and not at all evil. Being himself, and coming from Norman, and having May as his sister, he'll treat his Poochyena right. Raise your Samurott right in Hisui, it'll still be Dark type, but not evil. I dunno if I got my point across successfully, but it's there! (Deduiceye=Samurai Jack) I must admit I did not notice the similarities between Hisuian Typhlosion and Spiritomb! This game hit at the right time, as I'm into Demon Slayer, which has a similar time period, though there are no robots or trollies in Hisui! 😆 (I almost named my Hisuian Typhlosion Tanjiro, for obvious reasons! 😁) The free roaming is a plus! ALSO, I didn't really start my Pokémon journey until 2007, when I was in middle school, which was Diamond and Pearl time, so Hisui being past Sinnoh makes it all the more special to me! Anyways, long story short, I adore Hisuian Typhlosion, and LA in general! 😁 (Also, those trainer figures you had in the back of your older videos, where'd you get em'? Pokémon center? Ebay? Rosa, Dawn, etc... I looked, but I only found a May somewhere...)
