We continue along the line discovering Finsbury and look at what the Ammunition Factories did in WW2. Finsbury Ammunition Factory played a huge role in the process of begging with shell and fuse production . #finsbury , #southaustralia , #ww2 , #ammunitions , #railways , #station , #factories , #history ,#historical , #government , #woodvillenorth , #lostinsouthoz , #war , #secondworldwar , #1941 ,

That building across the road from the mosque when I was growing up in the eighties was the CSIRO. Further down the road was kelvinators. Simpson and Pope were there in Finsbury as well. I think on torrens road not far from the mosque. Nice to know what they did before that. That foundry was ROH. Got my first job there.

Hey Bas, Strangely enough, I got my first job in the 80's too selling newspapers at 14 , at 16 I worked in CSR Chemicals , the it had a name change to ICI Chemical...behind our factory was burgers , and beside us was Union Carbide , where they made defoliant (DDT) fior farms and Vietnam War.. then it all because a shopping Centre and housing,.. you can see where this is going ... People are now having HEALTH complaints. , Strange that ...go figure- I lived , and worked in Rhodes Sydney. History is an important part of who we are regardless of weather we choose to care - just a general statement . I would suspect back in 1941 they were different times and they did what they did because it was war... And back then for the younger people - what work cover ? And I'm sure all the reasons for these factories weren't published in public or on the internet...what net? But we had newspapers and these sorts of things were secrets , BIG SECRETS . I would like to see something done to save some of these buildings . It's people such as yourself Bas who remember what they were in the 80's and that's great. We have made no secret we are from Sydney and now call South OZ our home .. and research ... Our new home - (moved here a bit before covid ) . We are and have always been passionate about history , and yes rail is also a big part of history too. For me personally, I am not as specific as a rail historian .. more general history. I am glad you liked the video ..and its interesting that the CSIRIO occupied some of the factory buildings after WW2 and other heavy industries moved in , why because if they didn't all this would be lost .. when history is demolished and forgotten, that upsets me and it should everyone else .. the next gen only seamingly complains when they want compensation.. some illness or still births . You know health concerns - then seeking financial compensation - and yes I get it . But if history is preserved , not only can some , not all.. we can save the interesting structures , history for the next gens to learn and preserve history . Anyway Bas , thanks for the comment.. TC Bridgette

@@Lost_in_South_OZ Thanks for your reply Bridgette. I sincerely hope the generations after us start to look at preserving history rather than trying to change it. It's where we get a lot of our knowledge from. Regards Bruce

The munitions complex was certainly an important part of the state's history. But later, the site was repurposed with the next stage in history, the many private manufacturers who set up shop there. Kelvinator, Chrysler (truck assembly), ROH to name just a few. Also worth noting, Audley Street didn't exist in the 40s, much of it was the rail corridor. Glenroy Street came from Grand Junction Rd along the rail line, but terminated just after Millicent St at Athol Pk, which didn't matter much in the day, as few people owned cars, and caught the train to work. More of it should be heritage listed. The importance of it is downplayed too much. 32:15 - 35:15 is where Chrysler built trucks into the 60s. Ninth Ave terminated at the rail line.

Just to add, plant 7, as shown at 42:30 used to house the Christmas pageant floats etc when not in use. I used to work in the building opposite, plant 4 in the very early 2000s, assembling the last of the MAN natural gas buses, as a temporary location, until the contract ended. Those buildings had timber floorboards throughout.

Thank you again for your information. This is what Lost In South Oz, I'm Julie from that team, hopes for. We haven't experienced what we film and chat about. Some of our viewers have, such as you, and we really appreciate the additional information. As I said on your comment to the final Finsbury video, when I write something on Finsbury I'll include these notes, with reference to your user name. Thanks again for contributing to the story!

@@JulieMcDonald-yg7bm Thank YOU for posting up these videos. While not too clued up on railway knowledge, I do have some knowledge of the areas. More than happy to share any input that I can, so I guess we're learning from each other.😁
