The closest I have been to a lightning strike was freshman orientation at William and Mary about 2:50 P.M. on Saturday, August 21, 2004. We were walking to an orientation activity and were across the street from the library with lightning hit the library. I could feel the heat and the magnetic field of the bolt. It probably struck within 500 feet. I’m almost certain it was a garden-variety negative bolt. Lightning once hit our house when we weren’t home.

Wow. So where was this storm? I think somewhere in new south wales? I think the Northern Territory get even worse storms than Australia’s East Coast. I am from Ireland but I use to spend a lot of time in Florida. Florida gets thunderstorms nearly everyday during summer. I was in a house that was hit by lightning several years ago, the airconditioning exploded and the house was set on fire. . Since then I have never liked thunderstorms especially the Florida ones. And unfortunately many homes do not have lightning protection systems. I am also blind so thunderstorms are even scarier for me. The storms on this day in Australia were supercells I believe, along a strong cold front.
