A description and overview of Concordia Publishing House's The Lutheran Study Bible English Standard Version (ESV). (I neglected to mention in the video that the binding is sewn, that there is considerable show-through, as you might expect for a Bible with paper this thin - and that the symbol impressed on the cover is the Luther Rose.)

I am Lutheran myself. I have many of Concordia Publishing House's books, videos, and so forth, including this wonderful Lutheran Study Bible and its companion volume for the Apocrypha; the latter is the most detailed commentary on the Apocrypha that I know of and is well worth having. I am pleased that an apparently non-Lutheran like you pays attention to Concordia's solidly orthodox publications.

There is a study Bible (of the same title, alas) from another liberal Lutheran demonimation. That publication is fairly good by such standards, but it (and the companion for the Apocrypha) cannot TOUCH the Concordia publication for depth and reliability.

Thank you for the review. (Although, I am a little late watching it.) I have owned this Bible for about two-and-a-half years. And, despite the translation choice and the horrid red letters, I do love it. It is the best study Bible (content-wise) that I have ever seen. I, especially, like the notes, and I often refer to them when I am reading another translation and need a reference. I have been interested in the differences between Calvinism and Luthernism for the past year or so. A good comparison book is Lutheranism vs. Calvinism: The Classic Debate at the Colloquy of Montbeliard 1586 (CPS is the publisher). What I like about it is that it is a translation of the point-by-point debate between Jakob Andreae and Theodore Beza, without an author's bias. It is also quite amusing to read, in places.

Thanks for commenting, Rachel! This is one of my earlier reviews, so it isn't quite as systematic as the more recent ones. I'm glad you agree with me about those red letters. I've read three books that contrast Lutheranism and Calvinism: Jordan Cooper's "The Great Divide" (using quotes instead of italics or underlining due to the limitations of YouTUbe), Brian Thomas's "Wittenberg vs Geneva," and Kolb and Trueman's "Between Wittenberg and Geneva." I've added the work you recommend to my wish list.

As someone who is reformed(though I don't like the title Calvinists I prefer reformed because in the reformed tradition their is multiple of great teachers and confessions). I want to purchase this to get a fully comprehensive view of Lutheran theological perspective as read the ESV version which is my choice version. I love reading Luther himself and who doesn't love him. John Calvin even said he considered Luther a spiritual father and called him a great apostle. The Reformed cant ignore Luther nor vise versa. I hope it edify me in my growth in Christ. SOLA Deo Gloria!!

I am pleased to learn that you are taking Lutheranism so seriously. Although Anglicanism is some ways is similar to Luterahism, there are important differences. Lutheranism is much the more catholic of the two. Most seriously, Lutheranism takes the sacraments more seriously and rejects any Zwinglian view of Christ's Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist, which is what traditional B.C.P. Anglicanism proposes. I know that many Anglicans take a Receptionist view of the Real Presence, but it is Zwinglianism that the wording of the B.C.P. actually assumes and expresses in the 39 Articles. That invalidates the Agnlican liturgy so far as the Holy Communion implies. Anyway, it will be interesting to follow your path from Anglicanism to Lutheranism.

I just got the duotone edition for my mom for Mother's day (she is in a conservative Lutheran church). Reading through some samples, I really think the book introductions and study notes are well done. A+ on that. There are a few issues with the printing, the paper bunching up in a few places, and the gilding is not the *highest* quality. But in this one, at least, the red letters are pretty dark.

Excellent review. I am a former Lutheran (raised in the ELCA), but I have kept up with several of Concordia's publications. Overall, they make very nice products. (You're certainly right about that red lettering, though...not good.) Concordia's Lutheran Study Bible is FAR superior to a similar attempt by Augsburg Fortress (the ELCA's publishing house). I got a paperback edition of Augsburg's Lutheran Study Bible (NRSV) really cheap at a used bookstore, and it doesn't come close to Concordia's LSB. Barely worth the few bucks I paid for it.

I know I’m four years late to the party, but you should check out the Evangelical Heritage Version study Bible by Northwestern Publishing House. They did not include the red letter format and appeared to synthesize the some of the Septuagint and Hebrew copies of the OT. It is also a Lutheran Bible, and my church has been using it for almost a year. It was a smaller project, so some of the diagrams are wanting, but overall I’ve found myself reading it more than Concordia’s LSB (not to be confused with Lutheran Service Book).

Thanks for the question! Of the ones I've seen and used, I like the ESV Study Bible best. But as a general rule, I dislike study Bibles because they tend to have thin paper and small fonts. In Germany they use original Luther Bible in Protestant Churches, like the KJV in UK. But I have heard that KJV has been replaced by some English Bible mostly. KJV opened up English and Luther Bible opened up German language for the masses. Someone should do comparison of both Bibles and write a book on it.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 жыл бұрын
I can only speak about the U.S., since I have no first-hand knowledge of popular translations in other English-speaking countries. The KJV was dominant here at least into the 1970s. The RSV had been used by many since the '40s, but it was clearly in second place. With the publication of the NASB and, even more significantly, the NIV in the late '70s, the situation began to change. Nowadays, the NIV is the best-selling Bible in America. The ESV (derived from the RSV) is popular among many evangelicals. The NRSV (also derived from the RSV) is popular among mainline Protestants. But the translation most people tell pollsters that they actually read regularly is still the KJV. I think perhaps the Coverdale Bible of 1535 is a better parallel to Luther's Bible, since Coverdale's was the first complete Bible translated into English in the Reformation era. The KJV was a later adaption, and it only gradually became more popular than the Geneva Bible.

@@RGrantJones LB and KJV both opened up their languages and became the highest form of literature for their languages, even bigger than the works of Goethe or Shakespeare. I think NRSV is more preferred by scholars, I read it somewhere. Non-Christians need ecumenical translations to know more about the entire Biblical canon.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 жыл бұрын
@@hassanmirza2392 - regarding the NRSV, I think it depends on the scholars. It's certainly a popular translation among freethinking scholars. I see what you mean about the Luther Bible and the KJV. Good point.

@@RGrantJones Yeah, KJV is the top of the line literature for English language, which is the language of dominance and prestige in Subcontinent. It is very interesting to see that I can master it's highest form just by reading KJV Bible, with all the people inside already known to me, unlike the high end Anglo-American literature which has very alien characters. It was one of Gandhi's favorite books.

At 5.8. the note reads, "home with the Lord. Death divides body from spirit but not from the Lord. See note, v.6." At 5.6, the note reads, "away from the Lord. Christ is always with His people (Mt 18:20; 28:20). Here, Paul means away from the permanent, eternal reality of the new heavens and the new earth with the Lord (2 Pt 3:13; Rv. 21:1-7, 22-23). @@RGrantJones Thank you very much! I'm trying to reconcile "disembodied spirits" and "soul sleep". Most study Bibles (at least the ones I have) seem to advocate the "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" perspective, though that doesn't seem to be what Paul is saying.
