In this ride you will see a great new concept based on the famous Märklin concept: the third rail with studs. Prorail started this unique test just this week on the route between Almelo and Wierden. In this video I explain what it's all about. Along the way we also come across something that the Dutch are known for: a real klomp! In deze rit zie je een geweldig nieuw concept gebaseerd op het beroemde Märklin concept: de middengeleider. Prorail is deze week begonnen met de bijzondere test op het traject tussen Almelo en Wierden. In deze video leg ik uit waar het allemaal om gaat. Heb zonet nog eens gekeken, en ik zie iets geels tussen beide sporen in liggen, dat zal wel de klomp zijn dan, maar is heel moeilijk te zien. Overigens zat ik eerst naast de sporen rechts en links te zoeken. :)

Inderdaad ligt de klomp tussen de sporen. Moest zelf ook heel goed kijken. Zat eerst ook links en rechts te kijken naar misschien wel zo'n (grote) reclame klomp van een klompenmakerij🤣

After rewinding about six times I did manage to see the yellow klomp just to the left of the track. I used to have a pair of Danish klomps with leather tops, years ago. Thank you for showing the video.

I like the passenger fares included. It gives me an added perspective being from the States and not used to ticket prices where I live in the hills of West Virginia. Saw the klomp first time after I "googled" klomp. Also I haven't touched my HO railroad empire since I began working for the railroad here (that was at age 50 of all things)- just changed the scale.

I love the descriptions you give about the railway lines! Only one minor mistake has been made there. The voltage is 1.5 kV DC. The abbreviation for 'kilo' is a lowercase k, not an uppercase K.

Clever trick with the Märklin 'test track', but let's 'skate' over that quickly!! I missed the Klomp, it 'walked away' before I could spot it!!! In the UK they're known as clogs.

After a weekend hike we arrived in Spa, and after a short ride we had a changeover in Pepinster. To our surprise there was a real, full size train marked with Märklin. Since then I've seen these more often, and it always makes me chuckle.

I actually had to look in a dictionary to check what "klomp" was and thus what I should be looking out for. Then it was not too difficult to notice the splash of yellow in the six-foot. Previously I had been looking to either side of the track for unusual scenery! Some railway terminology: the standard track gauge is 4' 8.5", so in railwayman's slang the space between the rails and typically occupied by sleepers is called the "four-foot way". In the UK, the standard spacing between the outer rails of adjacent running lines is six feet something, so this is called the "six-foot way" - this is probably a bit larger on a UIC-standard railway. Goods sidings, where the crew would traditionally need to walk along both sides of the train to deal with handbrakes and so on, are set apart from the running line by a greater distance, known as the "ten-foot way". Often these terms are further abbreviated to omit the "way".

But on the first "Modern" twin track railway (the Liverpool & Manchester in 1830), the two sets of tracks were layed just 4ft 8 1/2 inch apart as it was hoped they would be able to carry wide loads at off-peak times by running the trains in the middle. It however proved impossible to maintain the spacing accurately enough, so the idea was abandoned.

@@jamestappin4741 This is true, although at that time even the L&M were using the inferior method of laying stone blocks to support each individual rail joint, rather than the "modern" method of wooden sleepers. The latter was invented and used solely for crossing Chat Moss, because it spread the weight of the train across the soft ground better. It took a long time for the transverse sleeper invention to spread to railways in general, rather than being restricted to such special cases.

Leuke video. Echt hilarisch hoe je het linkt aan Marklin! You made my day! :D Erg leuk om alle specificaties, alsook het weer en de prijzen in beeld te brengen. Maar met zulke filmpjes als deze begrijp ik wel waarom de NS-prijzen zo hoog zijn, ze moeten jou natuurlijk genoeg kunnen uitbetalen om alle camera en PC apparatuur aan te schaffen om deze geweldige filmpjes te maken! Oh en mijn lieve schatje bij 10:53 !! Helemaal alleen zonder wagons haha. Blijft een droom om daar ooit in mee te mogen rijden (of zelf een stukje rijden). @ 23:28 bijzondere plek voor een ooievaarsnest! Bij 23:36 zit hij zelfs op z'n nest, prachtig!

You may want to check out ALSTOM APS; very much a Märklin style third-center-rail power system but currently predominantly targeted at trams. The third middle tail is flush with the road surface so that other road vehicles can drive over and cross it. It consists of 11m long isolated segments which are actively controlled and only the sections directly underneath the tram are energised. Each tram has two power collection shoes and each shoe has two radio antennas that switch on the power rail segments as the tram passes over them. Only two sections underneath the tram are live at any one time. Currently 92km of APS track is in operation at various tram systems around the world.

I saw the klomp on the 3rd try, but only because someone mentioned it in the comments. My wife and I were in the Netherlands 20 years ago and we visited a factory where they were made. I was going to buy her a pair...until I saw the price. We settled for a tiny (5") pair that we put on a bookshelf and a teeny one as a keychain. 😂

I'm a dutchie currently living in the USA. When I moved here, I made sure to bring a proper pair of 'klompen', and I used them a lot in my allotment - to the amazement of other gardeners. You have to wear them to realize they are actually VERY comfortable - on flat ground. On sloping ground (very un-dutch!!) they are awful, as your foot slides down into the hard top cover as you go downslope....

Hi Vincent. I understand your thoughts on the pressing of the emergency button being always accidental, but I worry about what would happen if a passenger became violent towards the conductor. Does s/he have an alternative way of summoning help during an attack? Even after rewinding a few times, it wasn't until Kromaatikse mentioned it was yellow and in the six-foot that I saw it. I couldn't see what it was and had to look it up!

He doesn’t ignore it literally, when safe, he will accept the SOS request showing a video and audio feed, if nothing is happening and no one says anything, it’s obviously a mistake and pressed away, it’s almost a daily thing. And the conductor has radio communications with the driver. I’ve never seen or heard of a situation where a conductor presses the SOS button.. if said radio communications fail, I’d see the emergency brake being pulled before pressing the button, the emergency brake also initiates the same video and audio communications as the button, but this way the driver immediately knows $h1t has hit the fence

Je had me even te pakken! Goed gedaan. Ze gaan die 3000 v gewoon op de bovenleiding zetten. Ben benieuwd wanneer ze daaraan gaan beginnen, en hoe. (in één nacht om, of in gedeeltes in het land, met tijdelijke meerdere spanningssluizen).

Klinkt een beetje zoals met die nieuwe drie-rail draaistellen van de MOB Panoramic Express tussen Montreux en Interlaken. In Zweisimmen worden de draaistellen automatisch versteld van meterspoor naar normaalspoor en andersom. Na jaren testen is dit eind vorig jaar eindelijk in gebruik genomen, maar inmiddels rijden de treinen met verstelbare draaistellen al weer niet meer omdat ze de normaalspoor-wissels beschadigen. Vreemd dat ze dat bij het testen al niet ontdekt hadden. Ik vind dit ook eigenlijk niets voor Zwitserland. In Nederland zou ik zoiets normaal vinden, daar kan nooit meer iets goed gaan. Ben benieuwd of het goed gaat met die zwaardere locomotief, dus.

Update: sinds 31 juli rijden de treinen weer. Het verstellen van de wielafstand met enke millimeters was voldoende om beschadiging van de wissels te voorkomen.......

Alweer een mooie video, ga vooral zo door......(ook ik ´speel´ nog graag met mijn Märklin set, uiteraard alleen met NS treinen en wagons...😉..). Nog wel een vraagje, bij 6:53 zie je linksonder in beeld een soort geel paddestoeltje met een eveneens geel plankje tegen de rail. Waar is dat voor?

Die paddenstoel noemen wij een potje. Voorheen waren ze wit, nieuwe types zijn geel. Hierin worden kabels met elkaar verbonden en je vindt ze onder andere bij raillassen bij seinen. De gele plaat is een baken en onderdeel van de Atb-vv, het systeem dat zou moeten voorkomen dat een rood sein wordt gepasseerd: nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATB_Verbeterde_versie

De nieuwe locs welke je vermeldt voor dit traject zijn denk ik de Siemens Vectron. Het zou gaan over de het hogere gewicht van deze locs tov de 1700's die nu nog deze treinen trekken. Kan mij voorstellen dat de Vmax op delen van dit traject hierop betrekking heeft want dezelfde 'zware' loc moet eerst door het meer veenachtige traject Weesp-Hilversum rijden.

Nice presentation The 3-rail system not to be confused with the 3rd rail used for the metro and the regional express network. This one is similar to that of the brand at 1. 87th well known. The advantages are undeniable, but so are the disadvantages. Less expensive to install than an overhead line, respect for the landscape, less sensitive to bad weather that can cause serious problems in case of flooding, other disadvantages it takes a low voltage with substations for the transformation of the current, I tell you right away that the 1.5 kV DC is far from the account, with risks of electrocution

Irony of ironies: stud contact systems are not new to railroads! Back in the 1870's and 80's,there were any number of streetcar lines using studs or conduit for power! Also third rail,ala Marklin old system! The Liverpool Overhead Railway used the middle third rail in its original electrification later rebuilt to side third rail(uncovered),the same as the Chicago,New York[Manhattan],Brooklyn,and Boston subway and elevateds! Just a small unknown bit of history! Thank you 😇 😊!

@@CabviewHolland The history is there,but relatively obscure! The experimental lines of both Edison,and Siemens used center third rail,and the use of overhead wire,and/or rail,came into use later,as a way to prevent electrolysis, and electrocuted horse teams and people! Cincinnati had double wire overhead,to cut out interference of telephone circuits! Anyway,the ERA,in New York has quite a few historical pieces,and they are on the web! Thank you for your attention! De brug is in 1990 geplaatst, maar is inderdaad veel ouder omdat hij oorspronkelijk in Amsterdam is gebruikt. Goed gezien! Misschien leuk om dat in het vervolg toe te voegen. Zie verder: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoorbrug_bij_Wiene

Nee dat heb je helemaal mis@@CabviewHolland. De brug bij Wiene is uit 1932 toen de zijtak naar Almelo samen met het Twentekanaal werd gegraven en werd in de oorlog opgeblazen. Toen de brug in 1990 gerenoveerd werd, is een brug uit Amsterdam gebruik. Maar dit is de brug bij Wiene helemaal niet... Wiene ligt helemaal aan het begin van de zijtak naar Almelo. Die zijtak eindigde tot de 1953 voor Almelo, bij de zgn. "buitenhaven". In 1953 werd een connectie met de Overijsselse Kanalen gemaakt en toen was dus een spoorbrug bij Wierden nodig. En dat is de (dubbele) spoorbrug waar je hier over rijdt. Overigens is er nog een derde vakwerkbrug over dit kanaal, maar dan in de spoorlijn Almelo-Mariënberg. Conclusie: Wiene is geen Wierden.

Het is ook erg onhandig dat die noodknop zit op een plek waar je ook een deur-openen knop zou verwachten. Effectief sta je toch zo goed als stil en had eventuele hulp toch niet veel eerder kunnen komen.

Inderdaad een rotplek om een noodknop te installeren, maar ik weet niet of het handig is om dat noodsignaal dan maar gewoon te negeren. Voor hetzelfde geld is er dus wèl wat aan de hand, dan wordt je als machinist dus wèl (mede-)verantwoordelijk gehouden. Dat kan bijzonder nare gevolgen hebben voor je carrière, financiën en zelfs gezondheid. Zou ik erg mee oppassen. Als je als machinist te vaak moet stoppen door toedoen van de noodknop, dan moet NS daar uiteindelijk een oplossing voor gaan zoeken.

@@Tiger313NL Even voor de duidelijkheid. Dat noodknop is geen noodrem he. Het is puur voor als er een dreigende situatie zich voordoet. Vaak hoor je die alarm in hetzelfde treinstel vanaf een afstand. De hc gaat dan vaak een kijkje nemen.

@@CabviewHolland Yes Göppingen! But I can't tell you about the museum, old or new, never been there. That's how it is with things right on your doorstep. Because you could go at any time, you ultimately never go. I never had a Märklin model railway, I was always a N scale (1:160) guy. In my early childhood days it was Piko, later Mini Trix. In 1996 the next move was imminent, and in the new apartment I also had no space to set up the model railway. So I sold it at that time. I prefer the real trains anyway. Unless I would find a barn or workshop at least 50 meters long...

Over je opmerking mbt spelen met treintjes. Misschien zit hij al tussen de 108 comments. maar je weet de overeenkomst tussen de borsten van een vrouw en een trein baan voor kids? Ze zijn bedoeld voor kinderen alleen vaders spelen ermee

I keep hoping somebody would make a third rail power system that really would work reliably for both trains and low IQ idiots who walk across the tracks. Everything I can think of has reliability problems, particularly fail safe problems. {^_-}

So what happens when there is a real emergency and you ignore the call...? Is here someone else on the train the look into it...?

Once the button is pushed, I can hear what is going on. And a video feed should start. There is always an emergency brake system present and people can call the emergency number. This always worked for trains without these buttons.
