The most populous city in Warhammer’s Old World was the great port of Marienburg. An independent state that facilitated trade with the peoples of every civilised nation the city has been home to some great adventures and stories in the history of Warhammer.
This video charts the development history of the great city, from its first appearance in a single line of flavour text inspired by our real world to the ground breaking White Dwarf series to dedicated RPG sourcebooks, novels, and short stories.

Another great romp through the history of the creation of Old World - I didn't know there was so much! Always look forward to your Making of Warhammer series. Now, detail I know, it wasn't me who came up with the name. Marienburg in the Wasteland was the name for the role-play/skirmish setting that Richard Halliwell adopted following a trip out to Amsterdam in the late 70s with his then girlfriend Marrion. Marienburg is named after Marrion. When Hal started to write stuff for Warhammer he brought the setting with him. I don't recall there being much to it other than the broad theme and the fact it was surrounded by wastes of possibly post-nuclear devastation - during the process of building the Warhammer World Marienburg kinda came along.

You've highlighted what is my favourite thing about this Warhammer hobby of ours, too: That everything that has ever been written about or invented for the Old World or the 40k galaxy can be canon if it provides inspiration for your own model projects, rpg adventures, or stories. It makes all the stuff created over last 40 years a veritable treasure trove of ideas, visuals, and colour schemes you can lose yourself in.

One significant early inspiration that you didn't mention was The City League from Imagine magazine, continued briefly in Paul Cockburn's GM Publications. Jim and Phil had contributed to it as TSR UK staff writers, and so had Tom Kirby. That's where the idea of creating a city one location at a time really came from.

I believe Marienburg doubles as a bit of pun, if you speak Dutch. Read in Dutch it would sound as Marineburg. Literally a walled town or fortress asociated with the sea. And Marienburg is basically the Old world equivalent of Holland. Hence some of the names in the city.
@minementalx

I think it's a mix of dutch and german. Some things are more dutch, but the history of the city reminds of cities like Hamburg a free Reichs-city. Hamburg "bought" his freedom with a fake trade treaty.

When this book came out I worked at Viking hobby in Sacramento. One day a older couple come in, 50s maybe older. They ask if we have a Warhammer book called Marienburg. We had one copy which I had order for myself, WFRP was not a popular game but I loved it. So I tell them we have one copy. They excitedly explained they wanted to buy it as their son was the author. Needless to say they left holding the book their son wrote and got to hear me praise his work.

@@jordansorcery True, you are right. The name Marienburg suggests german, but the creators didn't give much attention to consistent naming patterns. @@Telrunya598 1. That chapel was build in the 15th century. Marienburg, the famous castle of the knight teutonic was build in the 13th 2. Name recognition is way stronger with the famous castle in Poland. And yes, you could equally say german is a dialect of dutch, of course. Until the 30 year war the Netherlands were seen as a part of the HRE anyways, and the inhabitants as teutsch (dutch). So while the Netherlands are, of course, a free independent state (like Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, Switzerland and Belgium), it's also part of the "west germanic sphere" as for it's history, language and ethnic make up as well as more specific the Benelux and more general the germanic lands (together with Scandinavia).
