Remember Makita had a track saw years before Milwaukee. Like they were the only alternative to Festool for a very long time.

I have had the pleasure of working at Makita and one of my lines was the making of the SP 600 and 601 among other lines. Our quality checks were great and the offline testing was three tools every hour, as our build rate was 54 tools per hour not to mention the team leader checks and my supervisor checks so you would be looking at around 1 in 10 checked for accuracy, alignment and build quality plus testing. Despite everyone being checked and set on the line before final testing and packing. I’m not biased at all and look for a quality product at a reasonable price but I can’t discount the Makita products.

I have this Makita 36v track saw and love it because it is precise. I found it on sale for a price that seriously undercut the others. For a home woodworker, it’s practically perfect.

I've been using this saw for the last couple years with both makita and festool tracks. It's one of my favorite tools. It's never given me a reason to second guess getting it over the festool.

Indeed, I have noticed that the Festool track is a sort of a industry standard and many manufacturers consider their plunge saws to be used on Festool tracks (e.g. Bosch, Metabo, Mafell and etc.)

I didn’t see the point of going cordless with the track saw when I’m already connecting a vacuum to it. I’ve got the corded Makita and LOVE it. I never run large plywood over a table saw anymore, and it serves on small pieces as a jointer too getting me a reference edge even up to 8/4 hardwood. (Done in passes)

Same for me, great saw. Use it all the time for plywood and hardwood. Honestly I dislike the Makita toolboxes, the open/close clips suck - the Milwakee is by far better in that regard but I mostly work in my garage so I have no need for the boxes at all, I store the tools on shelfs.

If you work on site in the customer's house and you have to change your vacuum out to do hoovering it's a absolute non-starter and you don't want this electric power cord you can actually cut this dangling wave everywhere., absolutely not sorry

Seems like if you’re just using it in your shop, corded is fine. If you’re onsite at customer locations, guess cordless makes a lot of sense.

Great job. Most thorough and accurate review on the internet so far. I’ve had this same model for a couple of years now and have been very happy. The one thing that disappoints me is the tracks. I purchased three 55” and a 39” rail and each one is slightly different. Not a problem until you join two together. When you adjust the saw to slide nice on one track it’s either to tight or to sloppy on the next. I’ve had to grind down one of the tighter tracks with sandpaper in order to have a matching set to make 8’ cuts. It was a pain to do but worth it. Also, don’t but the Makita track connectors. They are real flimsy. Use the TSO or Festool. I have the Festool expandable ones and they seem to work well.

🎉🎉🎉 Happy to see the Makita got a good review! But, did we ever doubt it? I’m glad you did the comparison between it, Milwaukee and the Festool. I think it’s always good to know not only how does it perform independently, but how does a tool stack up against other comparable tools.

I bought this saw based on Jonathan Katz-Moses’ review from a while back and was getting a little nervous when I saw this video in my subscription feed 😂. Glad you thought highly of it as well, it is somewhat of an “older” saw compared to many of the newer options on the market but I’ve been very happy with it. That stock blade has been very impressive for me as well. I would say the only downside to it is the weight of the dual batteries, but in some ways I also consider that a benefit as I feel the extra weight keeps the saw a bit more steady on the track. Also the Makita platform is pretty verbose, but as you’ve mentioned in previous videos, the Milwaukee platforms seem to have more tools directly aimed at woodworkers. I’m currently juggling 3 different battery platforms in my shop (Makita 18v / Ryobi 18v / Dewalt 20v), but I could get all the tools I regularly use on Milwaukee M18/M12 and being on 1 (technically 2 with M12) battery for everything would be nice.

Glad to see you review this. I got this same saw a few months ago and I didnt realize what I’ve been missing this whole time. It feels so controllable, especially compared to the instant torque my Dewalt cordless circular saw. Because of injuries, I have troubles ripping 3/4 plywood sheets on my table saw. So this track saw was a Godsend. Btw, I bought the Makita miter saw after watching your review for that and I love it. I love the soft start on both my Makitas. Easier on my aged wrists 😂. EDIT: Oh, and the dust collection on both my Makitas was also a determining factor. The track saw is night and day between with and without dust collection. I’ve forgotten to put the hose on and quickly remembered how much it’s pushing out 🤣.

I have the Makita track saw and track..even for a hack like myself..it has performed very well..has come in handy when cutting large panels and thicker woods that my jobsite table saw would struggle with. Great addition to my shop!

I have that Makita and love it. I’ve been abusing it for almost 5 years now with zero issues. The case insert seems cheap, but I haven’t had any issues there either. I’ve never missed the riving knife, but I would like to have the depth adjustment and waste-side splinter guard that the Milwaukee has. The Milwaukee didn’t exist when I bought mine. If I were starting from scratch today, I’d probably go with the Milwaukee just because of the other tools in the battery platform. I think the choice comes down to whether you want to run red or teal tools.

I use nothing but Makita Track Saws! My 2nd one! I am a professional Finish carpenter and currently within 2 yrs I am on my 3 rd blade going on 4! Recently I broke down 30 3/4” melamine sheets and it performed flawlessly ! For the cash a tough tool!

If there's a brand that doesn't get enough attention here in the KZfaq woodworking world, it has to be Mafell. They're similar to Hilti in that they are generally more geared towards the construction world, so it kinda makes sense. Their woodworking related offerings are top notch though, rivalling or even beating Festool in areas. I'd love to see you review their track saw, jigsaw and LO 55 router if you ever get the chance 👍😃

Nice review, and g'day from Australia! I just got the Makita 40v track saw and that is a single battery saw and it's definitely lighter than when I used my friend's 36v Makita. My main deciding factor was the same, the battery platform and already having some Makita 40v tools and my existing trust in the quality of the tools for the brand.

I have the Makita. It has worked great for me. The rips are much smoother than my DeWalt table saw. I use it for sheet goods and straightening edges on lumber I have milled from logs. When I cut a slightly warped board, I shim it so it won't wobble or pinch the saw. Haven't had any kickback so far.

I'm in the Makita club because of their circular saw that I bought over a decade ago and still cuts like it was brand new! Absolutely the best I've ever purchased! but then again... I haven't bought many!

Thanks for doing this review. I was hoping it was going to be of the 40v but I believe the features are the same and I can't believe it suffered any performance issues going to 40 volts. I agree about the insert in the box for the saw. They could have definitely done better but not a deal breaker. Very happy it was set up right out of the box.

40V is marketing BS. As well as 20V and 12V. A regular 18650 battery has a nominal voltage of 3.6 or 3.7 volts and a maximum charge voltage of 4.2 volts. On average it is 4 volts. If you join few batteries together, you get higher voltage. 3 times 3.6 volt is 10.8 volt. Or 3*4.2=12,6 volts at maximum. On average 3*4V=12V. The old 10.8V tool is the same as brand new 12V tool. Marketing magic.😂 5*3.6V=18 volts. 5*4V=20V. Marketing magic.😂 10*3,6V=36V. 10*4V=40V. Again marketing magic.😂 They want you to believe it is a new tool and buy 'a new generation'. 😂 What a BS! Long live the SP6000 corded version! ❤

Great review! I love mine, which I also reviewed. The stock blade was thing, which was great for thin panels, but I definitely needed a thicker black for cutting thicker wood.

If you deal if a lot of laminated plywood / melamine sheets then the scoring cut feature on the makita is a lifesaver. one thing that I noticed when using the makita is that you need to have adequate support underneath your cut to prevent any kickback. it does happen to me once or twice if the off piece that Im cutting overhangs the support surface.

I honestly love this saw. I bought it 4+ years ago, and it's performed flawlessly. I also have the makita cordless beam saw that's track compatible. All in all they're impeccable. It's more than capable of going through any timber as ive put it full depth into english oak without hesitation. If i was to upgrade it I would only buy the cordless Mafell as let's be honest it's hands down the best of the best. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Great review Matt! I'm Team Teal... the one and only thing I dislike about my saw is that cheesy depth gauge. Your saw should have come with track clamps although I've never used them. Blessings!!!

XGT with single battery. The LXT is still very good (used one for years), but it's the old saw. The biggest problem with Makita is the depth stop. Takes more time to adjust and set, plus the measurement doesn't take into account the thickness of the track. Doh!

Doesn’t make sense to me that the depth adjustment on a track saw is not calibrated for sitting on a which is how most people use it. I wish Makita would fix that. Other saws have a marks both for off and on the track.

I have the 36v circular saw the thing is amazing by far the best circular saw Ive ever used and it came with 4 batteries out the box. Matter of fact I liked it so much I have since switched to makita drills even though my whole platform " was" Milwaukee

Had a corded version for several years and then just this year bought the battery powered one. Cordless has been a significant improvement in my garage shop. It’s just one less step and one less obstacle on long rips. And if you don’t own a truck, cordless track-saw makes bringing home sheet goods from the box store much easier.

I went with the corded Makita track saw a couple of months ago. It is a fantastic saw, cuts smoothly, easy to set the depth of cut and not too noisy. The case/box is very useful as well, stores the saw with plenty of spare space. It also good as a small stool to sit on when working on low projects.

Nice Review. FYI - the Makita XGT 40v has electronic kickback protection, and it has AWS. The 36V has two models, one with AWS and one without. AWS is a great feature, I just wish the AWS chip came with the tool.

Nice saw and a good review. Is a battery operated track saw necessary or advantageous if you use it with a dust extractor? I am thinking of upgrading my sanding equipment to get rid of my dust problem and am interested in getting a track saw which could use the same dust extractor. Would the 120v tools be lighter? Less expensive? Thanks

thanks for reviewing the Makita. When I bought mine the only other saw in its class was the festool. It’s served me well and I continue to really love the saw. And like you said Festool never goes on sell. I just couldn’t pay the extra money for the equivalent set of equipment I purchased ( tracks, clamps, extra batteries,…).

A few weeks ago I was fortunate to find one of these used for a little over half the price of a new one. It was very lightly used, and the thing cuts plywood like a hot knife through butter. The track and saw just work great.

I have the Makita and like it, you're right about the depth adjustment being kind of a bother. Given that all my other tools are Makita, it didn't make sense to buy one of the other ones and I haven't regretted it. I don't recall that mine came with a "systainer" but I put mine in cabinet when I'm not using it, so that's not a thing for me.

What you are talking about in regards to "stickyness" is friction coefficent. The higher the Friction value the lower the slipage. It's what makes 'traction/ashphalt tape' work.

I've had the Makita for a little over 2 years and have loved it. To be fair though, I'd probably have been just as happy with the Milwaukee or the Festool - they all have their fans. My only knocks have been the same as in the reviews - the case insert is cheap, and the depth stop is meh. Honestly, though, I typically set the depth by eyeballing with the wood to be cut, so I can't say it distracts me too much. Power is great. Having this saw has expanded my woodworking - I have done a couple of projects with large miters through thick lumber that I just wouldn't have attempted before. The anti-tip is a huge help with this. Thanks for the review - spot on!

I bought the corded version of the Makita track saw. I love it. I only use it in my shop so I don't need battery version. Festool cost too much for me.

I have that exact same saw and enjoy it much. Sustainer do hold it but aren't great for durability. I use the smaller one to store my cordless brad nailer. The 40V version is more streamlined and has improvements over this older version.

I bought this same saw, and it's one of my favorite woodworking tools. It just works. All my other cordless stuff is Dewalt. But their track saw missed the mark (IMO). So I had to look into another platform. Watched and caught a sale with the saw, batteries and track for what just the bare Festool saw usually runs for. Added some more track and the TSO square attachment for the track. I used to hate breaking down sheet goods. Not anymore.

Love my corded Makita version. I have the 55in Makita track and the long 100in+ Milwaukee for it. They both work great but I do find it's a little loose going from the Makita track to Milwaukee. No biggie just tighten it a little bit.

Thank you for doing a review on that saw. The milwaukee I found to be very expensive and when you compare it to the festool..the festool to me is the better option. I have considered getting the makita saw because alot of people said it was the best bang for the buck. You might need to do a review of the bosch track saw..it received alot of positive reviews

FYI i have this unit and sometimes use the M18 batt+adapter at the top and makita 18v batt at the bottom position. (does somehow give some ummph to the full depth solid wood cuts)

Why reviewing the 36v 18*2 when the 40vmaxx is newer and has someone more torque. Especially when you don't address it for people who are already at the 18g system.

Great review, Matt! I liked that you compare it, Milwaukee, and Festool to each other, so guys like me who are on the fence of which one to buy can get an expert opinion. I'm on the Dewalt platform, but I'm leaning hard towards the Festool. If I remember right, the Dewalt has a proprietary track which is a deal breaker for me.

Nice review. I think for the major brands the "buy" decision is in part determined by whether you're already invested in a given battery platform. I'd love to see somebody introduce an adaptive battery system that would work in any 18-20v tool, so we consumers would be able to buy the best tool for a job regardless of the brand.

for anyone thinking about getting this saw, don't, instead get the 40v one, there's a major flaw with this saw - the batteries and the motor stick out of the track and if you have a stopper or a clamp or just say you are cutting in a tight place, the batteries and motor will stop you from doing that. The 40v one doesn't have this problem, the opposite side to the blade is flush and the battery is hidden behind the motor under the handle. The 40v is also more powerful and lighter. I've been using the 40v for more than a year now and it never missed a bit, plus it has a safety switch when it kicks back it stops right away. The difference in price is also negligible.

When doing the scribe cut, the blade must cut down into the plywood so you have to go backwards when doing the first cut and forward when doing the standard cut. That's why it dosen't have the riveing knife behind the blade. You need to go backwards.

I have the corded FS75 Festool Track Saw, it's been my "Table Saw Replacement" for years. (Because of the depth of cut and safer to use than a Table Saw) I've never been interested in their cordless offerings. For that I chose Makita. Obviously, I had to get the Track Saw as part of my growing Makita collection. I use the Makita more because it's easy, powerful enough, I rarely use it long enough on any one particular project that I have to swap batteries during use however. Break down sheet goods, it gets put away. A must have for an Track Saw user is to get all the track accessories. From squares, to angle fixtures and thin cut and parallel guides. Those are what makes the Track Saw experience the best.

Thanks Matt. I have the Makita corded. Love the saw, I only work at home, so it works for me. I feel anyone who has not used a track saw, should at least try one out. You have shown different saw price points. Go with what you can afford. I love my Makita. Hello's to AMY!

Hey, thanks for reviewing the Makita. I almost bought that Makita but ended up with the Milwaukee because of the anti-kickback feature. I know it's not in the scope of this video but I'm curious if the Milwaukee saw works on the Makita track and if so does the anti-tip feature work?

I recently switched from the Makita corded track saw to the Festool TS55. Festool has a lot of accessories and their systainer is a lot nicer. For the price of the Makita it’s a shame they don’t have a riving knife. I recommend not mix and matching tracks or else you will constantly be adjusting the saw so there isn’t slop. At one time I had Festool, Makita and POWERTEC tracks and they all had slightly different spine widths on the track.

Maybe your connection who prints inserts for the Milwaukee, can print a proper plastic insert for the Makita. I have this Makita and it is an amazing tool! Thanks for a great review again!!!!

When you said Makita thought about the battery indicator, it's defintely an after thought, and why most brands have the indicator under the release button these days. One thing that has always annoyed me on the 2x18V tools with the extra indicator as we get a lot in for testing when we design our tools, mitre saws, disc cutters ect. The battery's on board indicator has 4 bars, the one on the tool only have 3. Why makita whhhhyyyyyyy? It is a great saw however, never had a issue with it, and it being an old model now still holds it's own to the newer competitors. The XGT version I have been using recently is awesome too. Don't, especially if you are cutting longer things that require joining multiple rails. Makita/Festool rail connectors and tracks are rubbish and you have to manually align the tracks before tightening the connectors. Mafell/Bosch tracks are far far superior

@@731Woodworks The XGT is much lighter due to using a single battery. The charger is much smaller and MUCH quieter. Cut quality should be about the same - the Makita blades are excellent in this regard.

I have both .40v is lighter and has a lot more power although it has slightly lower no load RPM ima roughly the same under load.xgt also has electric anti kickback

What's very impressive to me is that the Makita is a much older design of track saw than the Festool or Milwaukee. It is just a battery adaptation of their older, corded tracksaw and it is still competing with the newer models from other brands. When Makita does release the new design of tracksaw I expect it to be as far ahead of the current generation and their first, corded saw was ahead of it's competition.
