The Mall That Time Forgot: Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Virginia

I recently had a chance to visit Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Virginia, a mall that I frequented as a youth. But back then Landmark mall was a vibrant upscale mall, a far cry from what is it today, a lonely, quiet mall with very few low end stores. It really saddens me to see how this mall ended up. This mall was recently used as a filming location for the movie "Wonder Woman 1984" starring Gal Gadot!

When I was a kid (Early to mid 2000s) this was the main mall my parents took me to all the time, since it was close to where I lived. It was really popular and a great mall at the time. I remember going to the food court and going to that great gaming place by the food court. So much happiness and memories spent there. Glad that place existed.

@@falseshepherd5156 same here. I take comfort knowing that it will be immortalized in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. The best years, for me, where between 1996 and the summer of 2001. That’s when I feel that the mall was at its peak.

It absolutely saddens me what's become of malls. I always loved walking through them, and checking out all the stores I liked. It was even better when I had money (of course). I don't recall ever visiting this mall, but I have fond memories of other malls in Virginia. It's sad to think that one day, thanks to online shopping, they could be history, and the joy many families, like mine, had of getting out of the house to go walk through, and even shop at the mall, will be no more. 😔

I was born and raised in Alexandria and visited Landmark when it first opened. My Mom took me to look for a Christmas present I had seen in a catalog...a telescope. We rode the bus all the way from downtown Alexandria because she could not drive. I was just thinking a couple days ago that I would like to ride down there, from Shenandoah County, and visit the mall for old times sake. I had no idea this had happened!

I loved Landmark mall. I used to leave my car for maintenance at the nearby GoodYear and then I walked into the mall. It was sunshiny and inspirational to me. I used to go to the food court, then I ate "LIVING LARGE COMBO" and read a sci-fi magazine. And I could see through the window how the American flag was wavering. And the skylights were so bright and beautiful. I can't even believe that now it is demolished. Its heart will go on in my memory and I still imagine that I am walking around in the mall.

I used to go there a lot with my grandfather throughout the 90's. It was an awesome mall at the time. Chesapeake Knife and Tool, Babbages's, EB games, a massive arcade upstairs, several nice book stores, and lots of interesting hobby stores (game keeper, radio shack). Year after year it lost the interesting stores and just went under like Ballston, Skyline, and Springfield Mall did. Thanks for the video, lots of fond memories of that place.

This was an absoluteluly wonderful open center when originally built in the mid 1960s. The idioits who owned it RUINED it when they enclosed it in the early '90s. What a shame. I have so many wonderful memories of the place when it was what it was intended to be. Pretty much every store there was good. Woodward & Lothrop. The Hech't Company. Raliegh's Haberdashery . Charlie Hale and Werner Kapfer. Sears & Roebuck "Satisfactioin Guaranteed or your money back." Peoples Drug (with a pretty good lunch counter as well). Hahn Shoes. Bond Clothiers. A really good barber shop. Charlie, who worked there is second only to my current barber. What a mess. How far we have fallen.

I believe Landmark Mall, and especially Woodies, was where my mother took me at Xmas to sit on Santa's lap. This would have been around 65 or so. I seem to also recall an absolutely marvelous cafeteria there with mural and frescos, I wish I could remember the name, but dining there was ALWAYS a real treat. Its so sad to see how owner mismanagement, changing economic times/social demographics and incompetent, bureaucracy-bound, anti-capitalism, left-wing, pro-socialist hacks killed a once economically vibrant and financially successful center of economic activity.

Great video! I live near this mall. I used to shop at it back in the 1970s/80s when it was outdoor mall too! Do you remember Woodward and Lothrop? What happened is that many of the people with good incomes moved out of this area and relocated out in Reston, Leesburg, etc. The population that replaced those who left did not really have the kind in jobs and income as those who left and this mall could not be supported. ;( It makes me sad. The mall looks more alive than when I last visited it a few years ago -- too bad they cannot convert it over for a different use -- like maybe apartments, condos, grocery markets, etc -- plenty of people in the area to shop there maybe even live there.......... Many malls in the my area look very similar to this. Is this the case across America? Due to online commerce perhaps? Seems like people want to go to malls but not to buy anything, otherwise the shops would be in business. Non-retail business ideas could be the way to go. Maybe not, that's just me though.

Welcome to the precursor of the cashless society... All these malls shutting down is a DIRECT result of "online shopping", folks either don't realise or don't care that because of them being able to "save a little money" by shopping on Amazon, eBay, etc. using their credit/debit cards, malls like this are dying, putting people out of work and it's not just the store employees, there are maintenance crews, cleaning crews, security, etc. that work at that mall, FOR that mall. Soon, don't know when, shopping malls/shopping centers/strip malls will be a thing of the past, you'll HAVE to shop online, using your credit/debit card; gone will be the days of paying for something with cash of being able to tip your waitress in cash, tip the paperboy in cash, leave $5.00 in your child's birthday card, etc.
