The Wrecking Crew played the instruments on this. John Phillips did play some acoustic guitar though the intro on this was performed by P.F. Sloan who was the composer of the number one hit "Eve Of Destruction."

This song was produced by Lou Adler, who had an extensive and colorful history in music and film. He produced Carole King's album "Tapestry".

They are easily one of the best vocal groups of all time. It's always worth mentioning that they weren't using overdubs to get that sound. Part of their magic is that their harmonies were so perfect that they frequently created an overtone effect that they band called "Harvey" because it was like having a fifth voice.

This is another great example of Carol Kaye's brilliant bass lines underpinning the melody of the song. Lyrically, it's wonderful and evocative of both sunny Los Angeles and the freezing cold New England winters.

There were three major backing groups of studio musicians back in the day, responsible for literally more than a thousand major artists’ records. (There were of course several others, with all labels having a stable of signed “mercenaries” for hire or loan) LA based “The Wrecking Crew” did this album. The other two, The group at “Motown,” and “The Swampers” in Muscle Shoals, AL. Google the list of recordings they made, it’s truly remarkable. Must watch Wrecking Crew and Funk Brothers documentaries if you have seen, to understand how American music was shaped during the 60’s and 70’s. These musicians do not get the recognition deserved for their contributions even in today’s music. Great reaction guys.

Such an iconic and beautiful sounding song that indeed epitomizes the sound of the 60s; the opening guitar notes are so recognizable. This was a huge hit when it came out and still stands the test of time as one of the best songs ever.

They were a group that was formed in 1965 by husband & wife band members John and Michelle Phillips. Other two members were vocalists Denny Doherty and 'Mama' Cass Elliot They had a folk/pop sound that generated a new 60's genre labeled 'sunshine pop'. I believe that John 'Pop' Phillips was the only one to play a instrument .. the guitar. The group disbanded in 1968. #California Dreamin' was released in 1965, peaking at no. 4 in the U.S. and no. 23 in the U.K. Their single #Monday Monday was the only song to reach no. 1 in 1966. The Mamas and The Papas were inducted into the RRHofF 1998 .. The VGHofF (Vocal Group Hall of Fame) in 2000 and the single #California Dreamnin' after being re-released in 1997 in the U.K. .. peaked at no. 9 and earned the group a GHofF (Grammy Hall of Fame Award) in 2001. ** 'Mama' Cass Elliot died of heart failure at age 32 after performing in London on July 29, 1974. ** Founder John Phillips died of heart failure at age 65 in 2001. ** Denny Doherty died of kidney failure in 2007 at age 66. ** Founder Michelle Phillips is the sole survivor today.

Bud Shank, west coast jazz great, plays the flute solo. Primarily sax player but did a lot of LA session work in the ‘60s.

This was a legendary group and as others have said they have loads of tunes to check out. I'd suggest the song "The Mamas & Papas -Creeque Alley (on the Ed Sullivan Show)" this song is an autobiographical hit single written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips; narrating how the group was formed and its early years. And the lyric that say's "And No one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass" is quite remarkable if you think about it. I think it took a lot of "moxie" to include a line about your weight (especially when you are a large person). It spoke to Cass Elliot's confidence and resilience. She was known as the queen of L.A. pop society in the 1960's. and I've read articles that spoke to the fact that she carried herself with such class and poise that everyone looked pass her size. Mama Cass (Elliot) was AWESOME ... so much so that you can immediately tell when they are ACTUALLY singing as opposed to lip-syncing in any video. She had such a powerful voice, that when they were singing LIVE, she had to stand back 4-5 feet from the same mics as the rest. So, if you see a video of them, and she is standing beside everyone ... it's lip-synced. BTW, in case no one else mentions it, this song was written for Michelle Phillips (who was a California native) by her husband, John. They were in New York, working with the group New Journeymen, which eventually evolved into The Mama's and The Papas. They were there to do recordings and she was feeling homesick for the coast. He stayed up late nights writing, and wrote the 1st verse for her, and brought it to her in the morning ... so that longing is what the song reflects. Incidentally, she always had a dream of singing before the Queen of England, and she finally got the chance after the band split up. She was still very close friends with Michelle Phillips, and after her performance, she was so excited about it that she called Michelle to tell her. She died in her sleep that night, having fulfilled her dream. I have always been so happy for her !!! At least she got that ...

There is a documentary called "The Wrecking Crew". Its about the studio musicians of LA up through the 60s. They were on every record of that era. Its an eye opening movie about the studios and all who worked there. Its a must see.

I REALLY do recommend their (perhaps underrated) song "Twelve Thirty", where Mama Cass is on the top of her genius, please do a reaction to that song next 🙏

Crazy little story about Mama Cass.. she passed away in an apartment in London, the same apartment Keith Moon from The Who would later die in four years later - both at the age of 32.

You guys do a great job picking music from my era. This song blew up the airwaves. Try “I Saw Her again”. Another great song by this group with fantastic harmonies. In a latter verse the singer comes in too soon and they left it in the song.

They were 4 singers . The band was the ' Wrecking Crew ". Everyone used the Wrecking Crew at that time. Look them up.

Legend Lou Adler produced and developed this group (among other 60's and 70's major acts). He always sat court side next to Jack at Lakers games for years. You guys would recognize him.

Lou Adler produced and engineered Claifornia Dreamin'. He also produced Jan and Dean, the Grass Roots, Carole King, Barry McGuire, Spirit, and Johnny Rivers. He also wrote Wonderful World with Sam Cooke. Lou Adler also founded Dunhill Records. .

One of the greatest songs ever. You guys need to check out the documentary on The Wrecking Crew, the studio musicians who played on so many hits of the 60s & early 70s. As well there is a documentary/ concert about the Funk Brothers who played on so many Motown hits. You guys Rock!

This and 12:30 are two of my favorite Mamas and Papas songs. Both are transportive and both are awash in the 60s sound.

I think you guys will appreciate a song from another vocal group who also recorded with The Wrecking Crew. “Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes” by the Fifth Dimension. They had many hits more on the pop side but this particular tune has really beautiful and interesting arrangement and instrumentation. A real who’s who of musicians listed on this recording. And along with gorgeous vocals of Marilyn McCoo.

There's an awesome cover of this song by Lee Moses on his Time and Place album that you and some of your viewers would enjoy. That whole album is one of my favorites. The title track is great, as is the song Adorable One. He does a cool cover of Hey Joe also. A very soulful vocalist/musician from the late 60s early 70s that was unfortunately overlooked Imo.

Was written in response to being in NYC in winter recording missing California. Got down on his knees to pretend to pray. The preacher liked the weather because it brought people into the church, even if only to get warm.

Beautiful song. It always made me feel both peaceful and a tad sad at the same time. We can't turn back the hands of time. But we do have to get back to nice music. It can be blues, hard rock, jazz, classical or pop. No cult stuff that divides by race or gender. There was a lot of music pulling people together in this era.
