It's funny when on home theater forums people have asked about the atmos for Mandalorian and people will leave comments like the atmos is awesome on Mandalorian and I'm like barely any sound is coming from the atmos channels. Glad i wasn't the only one that noticed the lack of atmos usage. Good review Shane as always!

I’m not a fan of Disney’s implementation of HDR at all. I’m watching on a C9 OLED but it is less than stellar to say the least. Great video as usual though!

I watched it in regular HD 1080p, and gosh, the image (contrast, color, brightness, depth, blacks... and almost no difference in term of sharpness) is so much better than the the 4K HDR ! It is just incredible !!

Rogue One and the Last Jedi are two of the most colorful films in cinema history. I don't know what's wrong with your EQ levels lol but if you think ANY of the new Star Wars content has a "muted" color palette, there's either something wrong with your television or there's something wrong with your EYES. Batman V Superman's color palette is "muted." The King's Speech's color palette is "muted." Star Wars may be going through a bit of a rough patch lately, but one thing the content is NOT lacking in is extremely vibrant, beautiful color schemes. And, yes. That includes the Mandalorian. It looks "green screeny" because Jon Favreau is using brand new wrap-around backing and blocking technology he helped to develop while making the live-action Jungle Book and Lion King movies. It's far from perfect because it's in the process of being perfected in the production of the Mandalorian series. And it's FAR better than anything anybody else is doing, so I'd suggest that people try not to let the "perfect" become the enemy of the "good." The Mandalorian isn't just the best new Star Wars, in any format, it also happens to be extremely visually stunning. Watch something with an actual muted color palette lol so you'll be able to start with a baseline for future comparisons, pal. 👍😂

Incinerator trooper Shane 4 the win 💯💯💯 had a feeling you was gonna put that on when I saw it in the background. Yes, on rocky music 2. Did u upgrade camera gear? Things look better. Not that things looked bad before. I always like how you shoot your vids and audio is always clear but this one seems a tad bit sharper and details in background clearer maybe. Is a pj upgrade still coming or you holding off and not selling the sony pj? I'm leaning towards rs3000 soon, undecided on anamorphic dcr lens or lumagen radiance pro processor? I absolutely loved The Mandalorian. In my opinion, it’s the best Star Wars to be released since Rogue One (and Star Wars: The Clone Wars before that). I’m definitely looking forward to a physical release with an improved video bitrate over streaming and hopefully some better Atmos effects as well.

I feel bad for anyone that would only sub to a service for one or two shows. Yes, I get dropping this for those of you that already own the extent of what you are interested in because it isn't a massive library (your interests here). I don't think many of the old Disney shows and DCOMs are easy to find physically, if ever released, I know old proper Disney movies can be tough to find for cheap. There are enough old Marvel TV shows to last me a couple of years at least. Nevermind classics like old DuckTales, Talespin, Darkwing, Chip and Dale, Recess, Bonkers, Gargoyles, etc. etc. A vocal number of 80s/90s kids have been clamouring for our old shows/movies to be put on a service. If Viacom ever gets older Nickelodeon shows, it would also be must have and possibly for even older generations with Nick at Night. Old Nick gameshows were fantastic, too! In the meantime, it is awesome my almost 5 year old asks to watch Recess with me.

When the files are ~5GB each for 4k but there’s no noticeable Atmos :( I feel like Disney should release a physical copy of this

Great show. Awesome to see them spread their feet away from the tired Skywalker Saga. The first and last episodes where my favorite. It really improves when the episode is filmed/directed by someone who knows what they're doing i.e. John Favreau / Taika Waititi, respectively. I too wish the HDR was implemented better and more. Even though it can be blinding at times I've come to appreciate the realism that it offers and disappointed when watching stuff and don't get that moment where I have to fight the instinct to close my eyes for a second. Sick right? Ha ha... But that's what home theater hobbiest do, right? Push the boundaries for that perfect experience. Cheers!

Hi! Thanks for this review and sharing of your experience. This helped me to confirm the situation on the "toned down" experience for HDR and audio that I also had. I got myself this year a proper home theater room setup (video tour posted on my channel if you want to check it out) and started season 2 and was somewhat underwhelmed of the audio mix. I could accept the rather dark HDR being in a total light controlled room, but the "flat" audio mix was just not on par with the actual quality of the show. It seems as if the audio runs on low bandwith and can't properly fire my speakers. There not many exciting moments, bass and subwoofer is weak in most of the scenes. Season 2 has many movie like moments, but the sound mix does not support the epic scenes. I compared it to other Disney+ content and for example Avatar rocked a great Atmos track. So it's really an issue with the source material or how it got mixed for Disney+. I wonder if they will release a UHD that properly supports a home theater setup.

What did you use to stream it?

I guess I'm the only one who was really disappointed with this show. It looked really bland and the story telling and pacing made each 1/2 hr ep feel like 2hrs. I bailed after Ep3. I'll have to try to binge it today now that it's complete. What video editor do you use? Keep up the great work.

I got Disney +, but I tryed to watch the Mandalorian, but havnt got past the first episode, I'm more of a Netflix guy really, but at some point , I'll eventually watch all the Mandalorian, I'm wondering if you could do a few of Netflix shows. Like Lost In Space, The Witcher,not to mention Stranger Things Season 3, tell us about thier 4k quality, crazy how people jump on that Disney train, but I'll keep them around , 7 bucks a month is not bad, but I got Disney +, for their old classics, but Mandalorian is just not grabbing me , or pulling me in, but I'm sure its good, and will be better, season two, plus I'm sure they have a whole lot coming in the following years to come, but look for that price increase, it wont stay at 7 bucks,,,,, trust me

Extremely disappointing HDR, no punch to the high lights (2~300 nits peaks at best) and the raised black levels are very questionable, is it to cater to OLEDs that have near black problems perhaps? LOL!!!

I think the transfer looks a lot like "Solo" as well, where the colors are slightly muted. Obviously it was an artistic decision, I kind of like that worn look of the "Mandalorian". Can't wait for next season.

Yeah im watching on Q90R and want that HDR to pop. But most stuff on Disney+ seems to be not much HDR at all.

How do you get the Atmos audio on The Mandalorian? I’m using Apple TV 4k & can’t seem to find the Atmos audio on this show. I do get Atmos on all Stars Wars Trilogy & prequels.

Thanks for the advice on fixing black levels on my oled, too bad I’m on episode 8 already but it looks way better. Still not getting atmos through my Apple TV 4K even though it says atmos on menu.

Love love the show. The HDR implementation to me wasn't great. I watch on a big screen HDR monitor, so i don't have the controls I do with a TV. But I do have basic calibration equipment and created color profile that got me what I wanted. An image that's fairly balanced like the SDR version, but with the HDR pop for the brightest parts. Also It felt like to me that in some shots, you can tell they pushed up the brightness from their source footage because those shots felt grainier than others. And from episode to episode, the luminance grading didn't seem consistent. I second some commenters and would like to get your opinion on The Witcher. Compared to The Mandalorian, a much more consistent implementation over the whole season, but it didn't really get that bright at the top end.

There is no HDR......see HDTV. Its fake. It triggers HDR notice on TV but its not there. FAKED PS. Series is over. Is it worth Sub now? Strange saying its worth a sub when the season is over?

I got the bundle Disney +espn+ and Hulu love the show but that’s all thats on Disney plus really worth watching so far

Watched it and loved it, but the not even close to 4K due to I had to use a third party streaming service because Disney+ haven't launched in Sweden yet.

All of the HDR on Disney + leaves a lot of room for improvement. I am sure it will get better. Slow developing plot . It got better as the show went along.

Ok so I have an Apple TV 4K and get all Star Wars in Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos. Mandalorian shows both but I only get Dolby Vision and not Atmos. Any thoughts?

what's the point ? i don't see this taking off , star wars is full of action and good dialogue this how ever is ALL DULL dialogue and 5 seconds of action all people see is that green little monster that doesn't even look that good and moves like someone's playing with a doll

I cannot get into the show, everyone is saying how good it is but it doesn’t do anything for me.

So much potential for disney to come out and blow everyone away on picture qaulity & sound with this show. Yet they failed miserably. It may have been intentional for it to be a soft color but man i had high expectations. Disney movies are good for the most part but man there lacking. Even the last star wars movie i watched at the theater was very disappointing.

So the funniest part of the review was when youtube auto-subbed "added crispiness" as "added Chris penis".

Sound design not at all Skywalker Sound quality, like you would expect from Star Wars. Bass was weak, really weak. Dare I say, non existent. Nothing like Game of Thrones for example which had excellent sound design.

Seriously Shane... if you're going to show the dark saber, you're not worried about spoilers. That said, how can you go through the whole review with ZERO mention of "the child"? Have you no heart man!?

No not worth it cancelled my perception after watching madalorion, everything else on Disney + I already own and I have rip with 4k passthrough mkv , Blu-ray mkv , and DVD. Now Netflix I love , The Witcher was a better show than the madalorion, I love r rated gritty stuff like , Ozark, mind hunters, peaky blinders, you want be getting that type of material on Disney , it's family oriented , popcorn and bubble gum.

After watching The Witcher on Netflix, it shows me Disney has a long way to go!

Its not really good, the story is a pretext to show different locations and plain dialogues, cause theres not much of a story to be honest. The mandalorian move to one place to another with baby yoda.it ended when something was finally happening. They should have done more.
