FWIW, Return of the Jedi was shot with a diffusion filter which adds to the softness of the movie compared to the previous films.

4K83 was from a very well preserved film print compared to the print(s) scanned for 4K77.

Are the HDR grades on the discs the same SDR to HDR grades on the Disney+ versions?

Nice. I did notice they cleaned up the ATATs animation if not made them look less cheesy as well as the speeder scenes. Especially the behind the pilot's shoulders. Also the very first initial shot of the walkers when before the Cmdr with Binos id's them. I dunno I felt like they stretched the widescreen a bit more because im seeing more things than I've ever seen of every edition lol.

How do the lightsabers look on the 4K discs? Earlier this year, I purchased the Disney regular Blu-ray copy of The Empire Strikes Back, and it was no different than the pre-Disney Blu-rays from 2011. Vader's lightsaber still looked pink, instead of red.

Aren't all the clips of footage used in this video actually from the 2011 1080p Blurays? They have a noticeable magenta tint in the highlights and oversaturated reds, which the new releases do not suffer from as badly. This is especially apparent on the stupid SE droid slapstick shot, which is cropped more aggressively at the top on the new releases.

Good spot - some of the footage of the films used in this video seem not to actually be from the recent 4K UHD release (neither the physical disc, or from Disney+) - which is somewhat confusing... Can you confirm this please, SpareChange? Many thanks.

I would give the video for A New Hope at least an 8.9, probably 9.0. In general, this trilogy looks really great on my setup. I think Shane's video scoring is way low vs. what I'm seeing. By far the best presentation on a consumer format.

Yo, Shane! Your reviews are pretty cool. Hey, I just have some doubts about 3D Blu-Ray compatibility stuff. I do have a 3D and 4K Blu-Ray compatible player and a 4K TV, but is a 3D TV required to play 3D Blu-Rays? Or is there a way to watch them without a 3D TV? I’ll wait for your response. Thanks!

I think a lot of 4K TVs are also 3D compatible - you'd have to check the manual or online to see if yours supports 3D. You'd need 3D glasses too of course.

My TV is HadR10 and not Dolby Vision. Maybe that might be why it doesn't look right on my TV on Disney+. I don't have the film's on 4K Blu Ray but on Disney+ the image on everything HDR looks dark and a bit washed out on my TV. I bought my TV on Black Friday a year and a half ago for half price @ €400

If you got the right 4K setup, it looks just like 3D wo the glasses and ghosting. Better dephs and color spectrum too not to mention better framerate during action sequences

@@chrislawson3134 It really doesn't. I have an LG C8 and a friend of mine has the E6, which was one of the last (and best) 3D TVs you could get. I actually prefer just getting 4K discs because of the added HDR and WCG, and also because the "3D effect" is simply lost on me after about twenty minutes and I may as well be watching a better looking image that doesn't have it. Having said that, the effect is absolutely NOT the same at all. The 3D on the E6 is crazy good and clear thanks to being a 4K screen that can actually get full 1080p 3D, which wasn't possible before. Now if you want to compare contrast between various panel types, going all the way back to 2006, Plasmas looked waaaaaay better than your typical LCD screen, and many said the image "popped" and was almost 3D like (it really wasn't though). It simply looked more natural and the contrast blew away a non plasma, especially if you went up in tiers to get the Kuro. Fast-forward to now and you have a similar scenario where OLED has even better contrast than what plasmas had, which were already better than LCD. Even though local dimming (FALD) screens can look really good nowadays, they still have many issues with blooming or haloing that still make them overall look worse than an OLED, and even plasmas in some cases.

Hey, I’m not entirely sure I understand the recommendation. I’m clear that if you have an Atmos setup then the audio from the discs are well worth the purchase. But I heard nothing in the review of the picture to suggest that it was worth the upgrade alone? In the end you say that the picture and audio are better than the stream. Is there a reason you didn’t highlight specifically what was better about the picture Over the Disney plus? Thank you

Could you elaborate on Disney plus dd+ atmos mix compared to uhd atmos mix. How much more immersive overhead effects etc was uhd vs disney?

The UHD is by Disney, it's the same mix, except lossy Atmos on Disney+ vs lossless Atmos on the UHD. Dolby Vision image on streaming vs HDR10 on UHD, but the former will be around 16mbps bitrate, whereas to the latter is more like 60-70mbps bitrates.

Bluray.com weren't particularly kind to the video quality on these. I'm still going to stick with my pre order for the atmos mix. I'm glad the 35mm 4k scans are out there online. The work on the scans are outstanding.

They Have a more natural colours compared to the 2004/2011 Blu-rays transfers. But not perfect.

Hi. I just recently bought 4k blu ray player with 4k "waterworld" and I noticed that the picture is darker and colorless than related blu ray. I noticed it also on you tube movies 4k vs. blu ray comparison. (" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMiEitmayNWlZ4k.html ") Do you know what am I doing wrong in my settings on tv or 4k blu ray player? Or it supposed to be like this like "v-log" on 4k cameras (gh5/s5)?

not sure what size and quality tv you were watching because even on the bluray version I could see the cracked plating/scuffs around c3p0 neck area ect.... though not as clear as on 4K

The Phantom Menace has been watched twice. No playback issues on first viewing, but the second viewing it wanted to freeze on Chapter 3: Short Negotiations, then skip to Chapter 4: Queen Amidala. The Empire Strikes Back has been watched twice. No playback issues on first viewing, but the second viewing it wanted to freeze on Chapter 47: Falcon to the Rescue, then skip to Chapter 48: The Empire Closes In. Rogue One also played fine upon first viewing, but on second viewing it wanted to freeze on Chapter 26: Attack on Eadu, then skip to Chapter 27: Eadu Aftermath. Now I'm very meticulous about my movies so I can assure you I did not scratch the disc. It might be a factory defect or possibly my Ultra HD Player. Anyone else have problems?

I decided to pass on the complete Skywalker set as I had already purchased Ep 8 on 4KBD and just purchased Ep 9 separate. I might get Ep 7 on 4K eventually or just keep the Blu-Ray. I probably will purchase Eps 4-6 on 4K BD more for the Atmos as mentioned. I still say that since Eps 1-3 are forever 1080P I’ll probably just keep the Blu-Ray for those

Thanks. I'm trying to justify whether I should by the Skywalker Collection. I own every steelbook in the saga, apart from episode 9. The only titles that I own the 4k are Solo and The Last Jedi. I own an 65 inch LG OLED and a 5.1 Yamaha HT, so I can take advantage of Dolby Vision but not Dolby Atmos. I prefer my Blu rays to the compressed uhd versions on Disney+. It's a letdown that they aren't visually stunning but in the end I'll get them anyway. This is the best version we'll get. Are you going to do a review of 4k blu Ray for The Force Awakens?

Watched it. The sound is bit soft. The intro alone is like on the star wars 7, 8 and 9. The dynamic range is somewhat compressed. Thankfully i have the 1080p of the complete saga which has the thx certified full dynamic range score. But the picture quality is stunning. Looks like it was from yesterday.

If the HDR is the same as the Disney plus that’s no bueno. Many videos were done that showed the HDR in those movies was poorly done. With nits never even reaching expected HDR levels.

Lazarrez Velazquez ti seems that disney+ did not have any hdr enhancements in episodes 4 to 6... and that is bad... some videstremer did compare blu ray and disney+ and find out that hdr was only Name in these films, not execution.

4K Blu Rays are the only way to go! "Disney-" ( what I call them) don't add Dolby Vision to the Star Wars Discs and only give 66 GB's per Disc, but they still look BETTER than the Streaming service! Shame on Disney- for not adding the extra GB's plus DV on all the Star Wars 4k Blu Rays!

Really disappointed that the original but cleaned up cuts of ep4-6. are not included, with different branching and chapters it could have easily been done even with the new atmos soundtrack without to much editing as I really hate the cuts over time and mixing with the story

I love Rogue One as much as the original trilogy, great prequel to Ep 4. Those four movies are the only ones I care about/will watch in future.

Seripmac Dolby Vision is almost always going to look at least a little better than HDR 10 and in some cases, more than slightly better. Seeing as how the Dolby Vision is on streaming and the HDR10 is on disc, we don’t know how they compare with these movies because of possible streaming compression and such, since Shane didn’t cover that. I’m not sure if that would make a difference or not.

There was an analysis done on the Disney+ and the Blu ray version which confirms that while the footage SAYS that it's HDR10+ and/or Dolby Vision, the reality is that the footage is still just an SDR transfer wrapped in an HDR container. Therefore, the Blu Ray will 100% look better due to the higher bit rate on the discs. The Disney+ version has no additional information. The only advantage that the Disney+ version MAY have is that Dolby Vision has dynamic HDR, which means that the brightness levels can change on a scene by scene basis rather than be static. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the Disney+ version actually does this, as I'm not aware that anyone's checked. Also, apparently due to the DNR, the 2011 Blu rays actually have more detail in some scenes. Hope this helps! (Also, If you're into that sort of thing, the 4K77, 4K83 and soon to be 4K80 fan transfers are very detailed, as long as you don't mind a bit of grain).

The shortest one is over two hours long? I thought Laserdiscs only held 2 hours, and only ROTJ had two discs... Were ep 4 and 5 edited!?

There were different LaserDisc releases where Star Wars and Empire came on more than one disc. The releases you’re probably referring to were sped up slightly to decrease the run time.

Due to the special editions... Just stick with the 4k77, 4k80, and 4k83 fan releases of the 35mm of the Star wars trilogy. Prequels are fine on Disney plus or Blu-ray though due to them being 2k or 1080p upscaled.

Disney does not own the distribution rights to episodes 4,5,6 Fox still owns that for now, fox owns the distribution rights to episode 4 for all time that was the deal lucas made with with fox when he wanted to make the film and fox loses the distribution rights to episodes 5,6 this year sometime but i'm shure disney will try to make a deal with fox for all 3 and part of the deal disney made with lucas is that they are to never release the theatrical versions ever

I don't have a 4k bluray player so I'd pass for now. The Disney Plus Version is perfectly fine and I'm pretty sure it's even better than the 2011 bluray versions. Not sure I'd really be that wowed anymore by the 4k discs. Sure side by side they will likely be marginally better buts that not worth me going out and spending over £100 on a 4k disc player that I'd use very occasionally.

The original version of Star Wars (1977) and Return of the Jedi are available online. Search for 4k77 and 4k83. Fans have restored old 35mm prints in 4k. They're available with DNR and without DNR. They look fantastic, but are pretty huge in terms of file size at about 80gb. These are the actual original versions of the film, unlike the Harmy Despecialized Editions, which are a mishmash between different releases to best restore the films to how they originally were. Unfortunately, The Empire Strikes Back 35mm print restoration is still being worked on because that print was in the worst quality. I still have my trilogy laserdisc box set that has the original versions of these movies. Except for the opening crawl change to Star Wars as Episode IV: A New Hope, they're the original edits that you saw in theaters when they were new.

I maybe watched a random movie or 2 on Disney+ a few Xmen animated episodes and the Simpsons and all of the Mandalorian. I Maybe watched 10 or 20 mins of the Star Wars films on Disney+ just trying them out. Saying oh yeah I'm going to watch these. But I never did? So much at my fingertips. It stopped me watching. I had Disney+ since it launched. So I canceled my subscription and bought all the Star wars 4ks except Last Jedi awful film and solo. because it's boring. I've already watch the 1st 3 Star Wars films 4k blurays. Dolby Atmos is fantastic!

Why do they keep screwing us over on the Dolby Vision on UHD discs? They give us Dolby Atmos but not Dolby Vision, it seems so silly especially when Dolby Vision can actually help with most sets not being anywhere near a thousand nits.
