I agree. She created this monster. Lianfang and her mother used her because they knew she was easy to manipulate. Her bias against Shiyi was evident from the beginning...all they needed to do was play the legitimate daughter card...and all is forgiven. You're right the GM should've taken responsibility for enabling her reign of terror. She should've stepped down as matriarch because it's evident she doesn't have what it takes to manage her family. Unfortunately they couldn't kill Lianfang because she was a legitimate daughter of a prominent family. If her sins came to light Lingyi would've been severely punished by the Emperor for not being able to manage his household. The greatest punishment for Lianfang is knowing that Lingyi never once loved her...she destroyed her life for a man that never wanted to be with her in the first place. This was a fate worse than death for her.

Right...she was determined to hold on to her biases against Shiyi's birth status. She didn't care how much Shiyi helped the Xu family...she didn't care how happy she made her son....it took Shiyi's willingness to die to protect the Xu family that she finally came around.I have no respect for her last minute change of heart

I always hate when the "elders" get away with almost destroying their families in these dramas. I get familial piety, but it just goes WAY too far sometimes.

Him lining up witness and testimonies, shows he NEVER trusted her for second. When I think back to his warnings to her, he was trying to give her the chance to change. First the first moment Shiyi raised her suspicion on the ride home from the Luo family when she was kidnapped, he started scrutinizing her every instance of harming people in the family. He was waiting for Shiyi to pull the trigger...

I agree...she's a wonderful actress...but that's not love it's an obsession. She never knew the real Lingyi...she was in love with the idea of him...with the idea of the little boy that helped her. If she took out the time to get to know the man instead of the boy version she probably would've changed her mind about him....or she might've fell in love with the real man....but she did even consider his feelings or what he wanted....just like his mother. She ruined her life for a man that never once had eyes for her.

I agree. The GM destroyed her family from the inside out. Concubine Qin was destroyed when she lost her baby because of the GM. She killed her own grandchild...and tried to justify her actions. Concubine Wen family blackmailed the Xu family by using army provisions as an excuse to force Lingyi into marrying her. Once she entered the household...the GM treated her indifferently as well as her own grandson. Lianfang was crazy as hell...and that has nothing to do with the GM..but her actions to continue to cover for her wrongdoings is precisely the reason the entire Xu family was nearly destroyed. They were lucky that Shiyi didn't hold a grudge and work to preserve the family after Lianfang repeated attempts to grab power by replacing Shiyi as the legal wife. She was horrible example for her family.

I agree...she did more damage to her family than anybody could ever do. They should've removed her from power because she's incapable of making a wise decision. She's not a very good judge of character...and she's too biased to see what's right in front of her face. Shiyi was lucky to have Lingyi fighting for her.

Well the GM and Lianfang are two peas in a very dark pod. It didn't take much for Lianfang to fool her. The GM was blinded by Lianfang's status as a legitimate daughter so of course she saw nothing wrong with what she was doing. Honestly the entire family should've made her step down from being the matriarch...because she's incapable of leading the family.

I agree...she deserved more than what she got....but the reality if Lingyi would've punished her more then the entire Xu family would've suffered because he would've been accused of failing to control his household...that would've looked bad because he's a general...in charge of commanding hundreds of men. The biggest blow to her happened after he handed down her punishment...the realization that he never once loved her destroyed the last bit of sanity she had left. It was the final blow....but honestly is should've been a life for a life.

@@catinabox3048 yes, after watching it a few more times and doing some research, I've learnt that a nun with hair means that she was untouched, therefore even more humiliating for her since she was a concubine. I could be wrong though.

I was also interested in this method of punishment. I don’t know how true this description is, but I read from one of the commentators that on his part it was a rather humiliating sign for her and her family. By not allowing she to cut her hair, he effectively informed the world that he never touched her. And given that everyone in the estate (and not only) knew that he lived with a young wife, it is very problematic to suspect him of incapacity as a man. And given the traditions and worldview, no one will suspect a man, only a woman will be to blame for such a failure. On his part, the slap in the face was incredible: the eldest daughter of the main wife of a noble family, who voluntarily became a concubine, imposed herself on a man who did not even want her. Perhaps, if she had repented, she would have regretted it and would not publicly humiliate her. I think this is also an additional blow for the GM. The expression on her face after he announced the punishment is very eloquent, but she has no right to object / ignore, as she did before. If the question concerned only Shiyi, then I think I would have tried, but here it is already too much (grandchildren and the honor of the family are sacred).
