This is one of my favourite songs. Little known fact: Chief's Mate Bob Cusick attributes this song to his survival of the wreck of the Marine Electric: when he wanted to just succumb to the cold waters he would shout out the chorus to this song until he was rescued the next day.

The theme of this song is how it's always worth the effort to preserve and maintain something beautiful. How important it is to prevent great things from slipping into the waters of history. The beautiful irony is that in keeping Stan Rogers' work alive, they're embodying that exact theme. May his name not be lost to the knowledge of men.

Its another kind of music than The longest Johns, but I've always felt not enough people knows his music. After a few months of awkwardly living at her parents COVID restrictions lifted to the point of me being able to travel back to my home country, albeit in homeless shelter; "No matter what you lost, be it a home, a love, a friend." I've finally got my life stable again with a good job and a roof over my head. So, like the Mary Ellen Carter I've risen again. Thank you for making a cover of what now is my theme song for 2021.

Lyrics (for anyone who wants them) : Oh she went down last october in a pouring driving rain The skipper, he'd been drinking and the mate, he felt no pain Up close to Three Mile Rock, and she was dealt her mortal blow Then the Mary Ellen Carter settled low There was just us four aboard her when she finally was awash We worked like hell to save her, all heedless of the cost But the groan she made as she went down, it caused us to proclaim That the Mary Ellen Carter'd rise again Rise again, rise again! May her name not be lost to the knowledge of men All those who loved her best and who were with her 'til the end Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again! Well, the company wrote her off, not a nickel would they spend She gave twenty years of service, boys, then met her sorry end But insurance paid the loss to us and let her rest below Then they laughed at us and said we had to go But we talked of her all winter, sometimes days around the clock She's worth a quarter million, afloat and at the dock And with every jar that hit the bar, we swore we would remain And make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again Rise again, rise again! May her name not be lost to the knowledge of men All those who loved her best and who were with her 'til the end Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again! All spring, now, we've been with her on a barge lent by a friend Three dives a day in a hard hat suit and twice I've had the bends Thank God it's only sixty feet and the currents here are slow Or I'd never have the strength to go below So we patched her rents, stopped her vents, dogged hatch and porthole down Put cables to her, 'fore and aft and girded her around Tomorrow, noon, we’ll hit the air and then take up the strain And make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again Rise again, rise again! May her name not be lost to the knowledge of men All those who loved her best and who were with her 'til the end Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again! Well we couldn't leave her there, you see, to crumble into scale She'd saved our lives so many times, fighting through the gale And the laughing, drunken rats who lead her to a sorry grave Well hey won't be laughing in another day And to you, for whom adversity has dealt its mortal blow With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again Rise again, rise again! Though your heart, it be broken, your life about to end No matter what you lost, be it a home, a love, a friend Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again! Rise again, rise again! Though your heart, it be broken, your life about to end No matter what you lost, be it a home, a love, a friend Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!

It won't shock anyone to hear that this song kept me going through hard times and pain when I was younger. It was always amazing to me how Stan could weave a narrative in so few words, but especially here. I've heard it covered time and again by bands who grew up listening to Stan Rogers, whose first experience with shanties and folk music was his voice hammering out the rhythm and defining how some of our cherished old songs would be sung for new generations even as he crafted new ones. But no matter how it's covered, it's always hard to compare the final verse and chorus to him and not come up lacking in some way. You've all proven to me for the first time that while difficult, measuring up to that standard isn't impossible. I knew as soon as I felt my hair rising that it was going to bring back all those emotions I felt the very first time I really understood the meaning and power in this song. Through the power of your voices this song rises again, may its tune always carry in the hearts of women and men. It's not the same path as the original took through us, but in your own way you've found your way to the heart of it.

It ain't just you. I Googled the song to see if it was based off a true story and the Wiki article mentioned how one of the only survivors of a shipwreck in the 80s was about to give up fighting the waves when the song came back to him and he survived until the coast guard got to him by intermittently singing "rise again" and holding his breath as the waves pushed him under.

This is an amazing cover of I think my favorite Stan Roger's song. this song starts off as a story song like The Wreck of the Athens Queen but ends on such a great message. that message being you can literally hit rock bottom, have nothing but the ocean depths around to see, and you can bring yourself up(with some help from friends and family) to being above water again. now you may be worse for wear but your afloat and THAT'S what matters in the end.

I like that interpretation. Stan Rogers makes a point that the ship's crew pulled up The Mary Ellen Carter together. When you feel like you're drowning, you don't have to keep your head above water on your own. You can reach out to others to help you from sinking.

I grew up listening to Stan from age 4, and the Mary Ellen Carter was the first song I had heard in my dad’s car on the way to school, my dad having been given a burned disc of his hits by someone from the local folk club who had said my dads guitar playing sounded very similar. We have been listening to him ever since! On road trips to the Victorian Islands we would blast his songs, and proudly sing The Northwest Passage on the ferry boats. As I grew up, my passion for music grew as well, turning into a folkie much in the way that my dad had done. I started singing Stan Rogers, Jim Croce, Tom Paxton, Eric Bogle, etc. and proudly leading shanties at concerts for years. I moved to Ireland, and then I discovered you guys, in a neat video from 8 years ago now with you guys enjoying shanties and folk songs the way we did at our house for years and years 😃But through all those years, all the concerts and little coffee houses, we always had to explain who Stan Rogers was, and how important he was. I went from a casual observer of your stuff to an avid fan, and decided I wanted to come and see you live! So I came to your show, and one of your first songs in your set was The Mary Ellen Carter, and you really knew what he did and how important his work was! I stood near the front, and proudly cried when you guys nailed it the way you did. My faith and respect in you guys tripled that night. Keep up the wonderful work, fellas 💕

Coming back to this a year on.. A: Still Love It B: The baseline will always remind me of '39 by Queen. A song which, being about travel over vast distances and the challenges thereof, seems very much in the Longest John's wheelhouse, even if starfaring rather than seafaring!

I first heard this song on one of your streams. It quickly became one of my favorite Stan Rogers songs (second only to NW Passage) and one of my all-time favorite covers you guys do. So happy to see it and hear it in all its glory. Very adequate indeed!

Hey there, I first heard this cover as part of yall's Desert Bus for Hope live show, and had been using DB21 to help keep my head together following one of my closest friends and I parting ways, and when yall hit that last verse, it did a lot to kinda jar me into remembering that all will be alright. I appreciate the heck outta yall.

I love this version. It's seemingly just a copy of the Stan Rogers original, but it isn't at all. I've kept them both: Rogers emphasizes the lyric, and these guys emphasize the driving music. They're both terrific!

A stranger shared this song with me. This year has been devastating and promises to get worse before the next. I needed this today.

It's not easy to cover a Stan song, and particularly hard to please a Canadian from the Maritimes with one, but you manage to do it. Well done lads, love it.

What a phenomenal cover, it's hard to match the kind of passion Stan put into his vocals and music, but I would say this version matches his, beat for beat. Hope you guys cover more of his catalogue, would love to hear White Squall and Barrett's Privateers :D
