In Star Wars you don't get much bigger than the Death Star when it comes to the Empire's toys, except for the Second Death Star. So, how did the Empire manage to hide such a massive construction from the Rebels? The answer was a giant, man-made hyperspace route.

Sort of surprised that the massive amount of resources diverted to the Pipeline and DS2 didn't draw the attention of more people out there in the rim. The fact that the rebels found out in a manner controlled by the Empire rather than the rumours of some space truckers is pretty amazing.

With the mention of Sullust, I'd love a video on if any source ever explained Jerec having a massive tower on Sulon, the moon of Sullust. During the early new republic. I mean in Jedi Knight 1 the stoprmtroopers did stay to the interior, and used mostly hired thugs like Grave Tuskens and gran for harassing the civilians, but did nobody wonder what was going on in the old imperial tower?

It's hard enough to fathom something on the scale of the Death Stars being kept secret, but talking about making entire hyperlanes?! The amount of time and resources that would take is almost unimaginable. I think we almost have to assume that Palpatine used the Dark Side to keep such a thing secret. Otherwise I just don't think such an enormous operation could be hidden.

I mean, once the initial part was done, the areas they'd be working it would be off the beaten path- and presumably, the Empire expending a ton of resources was commonly known as "Tuesday", so that wouldn't draw any attention.

@@papapalps2415 Not when you're talk galactic scale construction that would have taken millions of workers and trillions on credits. There is functionaly no way to keep that secret - save the dark side.

I found a plot hole: canon says that General Grievous was given the coordinates to Coruscant by Darth Sidious - but if the route was already known, wouldn't he already have known about it?

Everyone and they're mom knows what hyperlanes lead to Coruscant meaning the republic would have fleets guarding major lanes and checkpoints to make sure the planet isn't attacked. Sidious gave Greivous secret coordinates so he can launch a surprise attack.

Wouldn't the hyperspace lanes close up or atleast change, since objects orbit the galaxy at different rates depending on their distance to the core?

Indeed you are correct. Hence the use of navigational computers and droids like astromechs to calculate the jumps and pilots would have to get their nav computers updated often (or perhaps it could have been done in real time). I imagine for an artificial lane like this one, it probably would have been an even bigger headache. Corey even mentions that after the DS2 destruction and the fall of the empire, the lane was closed up because no one maintaining it and keeping the data fresh

Likely one of the unsung things all governments do is keeping navigation charts up to date to account not just for stellar drift but other random objects floating around. Most stuff they could just track with telescopes aboard a ship that patrols the hyperspace lane, periodically dropping to in normal space to take sightings which sounds like long, tedious, and boring work but essential to keeping interstellar civilization running.

This scale of mega engineering is some of my favorite lore in Star Wars. Seeing what the Empire was truly capable of when they utilized the resources of the entire galaxy towards one common goal shows its true potential. If Palpatines evil hadn’t corrupted the Empire from the start there would have been no limit on what it could have achieved. Creating new hyperspace routes not for secret and insane super weapons but to revolutionize travel and trade, terraforming new worlds and ending piracy to usher in a golden age never before seen… this is starting to sound like ISB propaganda lol.
