Hi Dawn! Morpheus' glasses are called pince-nez, french for "pinch the nose" which is how they stay on. They've been around since the 19th century so oddly they just seem futuristic.

Thats Hugo Weaving playing the lead Agent. He's Australian and I have worked with him on a few different Australian features and miniseries. Back in my younger days I was in the industry. Dont know if you know it but the Matrix was filmed in Sydney Australia. There a several recognisable iconic Sydney streets used.

The Oracle (who is a computer program) gives Neo a "cookie" (just like every webpage) and like nearly everyone Neo simply accepts it😂 Also, the Oracle says "maybe your waiting for a next life" Sure enough, Neo only sees the Agents / Matrix in its coded form after he's been killed😉

Agent Smith looked familiar because he was the Red Skull in, "Captain America", and he was the Elvish King, Elron in, "Lord Of The Rings." What make this movie so cool is that it could actually be happening right now and you don't know it. Another movie that could be happening around you is the plot for John Carpenter's, "They Live." I had never heard of this hidden le gem of a movie but I'm glad to watch this reaction! Seems like an interesting story that could easily span a trilogy and maybe even a movie based on short stories centered in this universe.

Before The Matrix, Keanu Reeves came out in his first cyberpunk film back in 1994 called Johnny Mnemonic. It's not as great as the Matrix, but it's not a bad film.

If you continue on with the franchise, I recommend "NOT" skipping over the Animatrix, even if you just watch it on your own before jumping into the sequel. The movie is a collection of animated shorts, that really flushes out the world of the Matrix, providing tons of backstory and history, setting up the events of the sequel, explores numerous philosophical themes and tell a wide variety of stories. It's like a smorgasbord of animation, since they used different studios to create each chapter, each has it's on unique look, feel, animation style and technique, not to mention exploring a range of narrative styles and perspectives.

As cheesy as the "loves first kiss" gimmick may seem, I always looked at it as him feeling that in the real world made him fully realize just how unreal the world in the Matrix was.

Agent Smith is the head elf from The Lord of the Rings. The sequels aren't on the same level as this movie but you'll see Zion and learn more of the story so they're worth it overall.

The original concept was Humans were integrated into the Matrix in order to use their neurons for decision making & different maths abilities. As an example, they're like a graphics board. In practice, Humans are terrible with energy. We need the most energy intensive fuel for very little result.

"Why do my eyes hurt?" "You've never used them before." This gave me such bigger chills than "Welcome to the real world".

Based on what perceive your age to be, you probably embrace the idea that we're in a simulation *because* of this movie. It put those ideas into the broad public conscious, and you grew up on them.

I'm not convinced we're living in a simulation, but... If you zoom in far enough on reality, you do find that at the most basic level everything is essentially quantized packets of information, which is kind of what you'd expect if this was a simulation.

I believe that style of glasses that Morpheus wears is called pince-nez. The little bits that go up against the bridge of the nose work as a clamp and keep the glasses on, although I bet in practice they would come off easily.

There are so many tiny, subtle clues throughout all of the Matrix movies. I catch something new each time I watch. Looking forward to the next one. This has been a great way to start my day, think I'll get up and try to deal with some of the "agents" in my matrix.

Another mind-blowing simulation-world movie that really is under most people's radar is "the 13th Floor" 1999 (Craig Bierko, Gretchen Mol, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Vincent D'Onofrio, Dennis Haysbert) There are no reactions on youtube, just reviews. Your opening bit about knowing all about this little-known movie, really set the tone for turning our heads around. To know how to do that, you must have some inside information from behind the scenes... Now that you're watching LotR, you'll recognize Hugo Weaving (Also in "V for Vendetta, though we don't see his face")

Other "simulation world...thing" movies (from a similar time period) are: 'Dark City': came out the year before 'The Matrix'. Is very different in tone, and doesn't have nearly the same budget, but it's a really good movie. Kind of a mystery/detective story almost. 'The 13th Floor': came out just after 'The Matrix'. Not as good as the other two options, but it's not a bad flick.

It was one of the main reasons simulation theory was popularized in the first place. People had mixed reactions to the second and third movies. I love it when a movie has a perfect end sequence with perfect song...open to suggestions, but others include Se7en and another Fincher masterpiece Fight Club! My best has to be The Empire Strikes Back...the same closing credit piece as them all I think...but it is my fav SW film, and the orchestral transition at the end is ridiculous.

This was all considered "revolutionary" YET, the "Matrix" as a computer system was first introduced in the 1976 Doctor Who serial, The Deadly Assassin, 23 years before the release of this film. The difference is that the Matrix was not the real world but you could make it what you wanted. This movie is the other way around. NOBODY ever mentions Doctor Who as the true origin of the "Matrix". Now, you know.

The idea goes back ancient Greece - In "The Allegory of The Cave" Plato suggested that if people were born in a cave and lived their entire life in it, they would think that's all of reality. If they were ever to see the world outside the cave, they would retreat back to the familar in confusion and terror. In science fiction, there was an original Star Trek episode where they are trapped in Westworld sim, ("Spectre of The Gun" 1968) which they are able to defeat in a similar manner, by convincing themselves none of the danger was real. Tom Baker entered a computer-generated simulation, actually called a "matrix" in a Dr Who episode. ("The Deadly Assassin" 1976). There's an 80's anime about people unaware that they are living in a fake Tokyo inside of a giant space station, 500 years in the future. They also have the scary "squiddie" robots. ("Megazone 23" pts 1&2 1985-86) The year before the Matrix was realeased, were TWO movies about fake realities: "The Truman Show" with Jim Carrey, and "Dark City." Dark City is remarkably similar to The Matrix, down to the look and production design. The Matrix actually recycled some sets and props from Dark City. Dark City is also *really good.* Some people like it as much or more than The Matrix.

I can tell you the theater I watched this in on opening weekend is no longer there, on Sepulveda Blvd in Van Nuys just north of the 101 in Southern California while I was on vacation. It's one of those movies that not only changed theater, it changes who you are.

Reality being a simulation is actually one of the theories in quantum mechanics. It would explain some of the wierd things like quantum tunneling and one guy has been trying to build an experiment to prove or disprove the theory for years now.

The homeless guy in the subway wasn't an Agent. Agents are security programs written to keep the Matrix running smoothly. As programs they can jump into any human body inside the Matrix (because those bodies are just simulations). This was why Neo was so scared when he ran into a crowd of people. It is also why no one could ever kill an agent. Only the body they were inhabiting gets killed (sucks to be that person) while the Agent program just jumps to another person. At the end Neo attacks Smith's program, not just the body he was in, and destroys it from the inside. He finally truly grasped that it was all just code and Neo as a hacker could do literally anything inside the Matrix.

I saw the Matrix when it came out, in the theater. I used to be an artificial intelligence computer programmer and used matrices. A matrix is a mathematical structure which can be used in artificial intelligence and computer graphics programming. Neat movie. Cute Scottish reactor. Thumbs up!

As the story goes...we went to see this in High School. However my bass player failed to mention to any of us that he had taken 3 hits of acid before hand. He never even made it through the opening credits before running out of the theater and spending the rest of the movie in the car doing God knows what. He took the Purple pill, for sure. P.S. Yes you have seen Agent Smith before, if you have seen The Lord of the Rings, he is Lord Elrond. This is my first time with you and you have a new subscriber 👍🏼

You can look up the _pince-nez_ sunglasses that Morpheus wore, to see how they stay on. Basically, they pinch the bridge of the nose, and the name comes from a French phrase (pronounced 'pahnss nay') that literally means 'pinch nose' (also 'nose pincers' or even 'nose pliers'). The style that Morpheus wore had spring-loaded nose cushions, with little wire handles projecting toward the front, which you can see him using at 22:04. When they first came into style around the late 19th and early 20th century, the spring action was achieved by making the connecting piece curved and springy. I've always thought skin oils or sweat would make them fall off. But perhaps Morpheus is too cool to sweat (when he's not being tortured, that is).

There are some pimped out badass scenes coming up in the following Matrix movies, all worth seeing. Now I didn't think that we could be in a simulation until I saw previews for Unreal Engine 5. That made simulation a possibility in my thinking. Anyways, I'm now in the 50/50 group in the "are we in a simulation" theory. I just don't know anymore.

All the computer language references in these movies are cool and hard to keep up with. Mr. Anderson's apartment is room 101. 101 is a course or manual for beginners. Like the beginning of Mr. Anderson's hacking career. Trinity's room is 303. The 303 HTTP status code means that the redirects don’t connect to the recently transferred resource, but to another page. Like, leading Mr. Anderson to other resources. The definition of "Neo" is new, recent, revived or modified. It can also mean first or the one. One of my favorites and way more subtle than the rest is at the Oracle's apartment. Neo had to accept her "cookies" before he could use her knowledge. lol

While there are 3 main movies, there is a underrated Animated Feature called The Animatrix (2003) which was also written by the same writers as The Matrix (1999).In the timeline of the movies, the Animatrix (2003) is second as the first short of the film is directly connected to the storyline of the sequel, The Matrix Reloaded (2003). The Animatrix (2003) is definitely worth the time if you want all the maximum Matrix👍

This movie is one of the most complex movies ever made, most people that say they know what the Matrix about, don’t know the half of it’s true meaning.

When hes given the training programs for fighting styles, he says "i know kung fu". In chinese culture, kung fu translates to "hard work". So essentially what he was saying was he knows a lifetime of dedication, practice and hard work which was spread out through multiple disciplines. Alot of people are misinformed on what kung fu is. You could be a bricklayer and you would be practicing kung fu.

You should absolutely see the sequels. But you should ALSO be sure to check out Dark City, which came out before The Matrix and featured a not altogether dissimilar idea and feel.

squid thing is robot model called Sentinel, they were originally used as work force for mounting things together in factories by Machine City/country before war with humans, in war they were used as effective soldiers and saboteurs since they also fly. So after the war they are machine's military main fighting force

The theory that we all live in a simulation pops up now and then. The idea is often compared to the allegory of Plato's Cave. Also, some spiritual traditions claim that the world we believe we're in is but an illusion, basically expressing the same idea using different terms. Thanks for another enjoyable reaction!

The glasses Morpheus wears are called pince-nez ... in French, literally, pinch-nose. That's how they stay on. The interesting trivia about the sunglasses is that each main character wears different sunglasses, designed specifically for that character, the same with their clothes in the Matrix ... except for the Agents, who all wear the same type of clothes and glasses. lt represent the individuality of the people, but not the Agents.

One helluva movie. I would only nitpick ONE thing in the entire movie, and that is the "love's true kiss" that Trinity uses to bring Neo back to life. Aside from that, this movie fires on all cylinders at all times.

I don't know if you ever watch the sitcom _The Big Bang Theory,_ but there's one episode in which Sheldon (a theoretical physicist and former child prodigy) is dealing with Dennis Kim (a _current_ child prodigy) and manifests his insecurities with him by saying, "You can see the Matrix, can't you?" If you ever see this episode, now you understand the significance of this line.

The Oracle told Neo "not in this lifetime". Neo had to die to become 'the one'. While Trinity was told by the Oracle that she would fall in love with 'the one'. Her kiss was symbolic of her love of Neo. So Trinity's prophecy brought Neo back from the dead to awaken Neo into becoming 'the one', fulfilling Neos' and Morpheus' prophecy.

You only ever see 3 Agents in the movie. They don't really have a body, they "possess" people that are a part of the system. If the person isn't a part of their system, like Morpheus' group that hacked into it instead of being a part of it, then they can't "possess" them or see what they see. Before they rescued Neo, an Agent could potentially take over his body, that's why they had a gun on him at first. If an Agent dies, it's just the person they're "possessing" that dies, and they simply switch to another person. When Neo's running away at the end, the Agents are picking people that are further ahead in the direction he's going to "possess", and always be in his face. It's easier and more effective than just running him down on foot.

23:55 "I forget: what makes the agents more powerful?" It's because they're computer programs, not people. Not only were they designed specifically for this purpose, but they were designed without the limits placed on humans in the simulation (which are there to make it seem real).

"There is no spoon." is one of the best movie lines of all time. Haha, I lost count of how many times you said, "I want to do that." Like you, I have believed for many years that this could all be true. How would we know? I was living in Italy when this came out and in the town I was living the video store had one shelf of English language movies. The Matrix blew my mind so much I watched it 5 times in a day and then hired it again the following week. It is rare that sequels are as good as the original but Matrix 2 and 3 come very close. The film 'Dark City' with Jennifer Connelly is along similar lines, but not quite.... As I'm sure you know by now where you knew Agent Smith from, Hugo Weaving (apart from his role in the Lord Of The Rings) is in many fantastic films.

I can always depend on you; Dawn Marie, if I ever want to watch an interesting video. Your reaction to first Morpheus leaving the matrix by telephone, down in the subway. Then being impatient with Trinity letting the phone ring. "What are you waiting for!?!" "Answer the flippin' phone!!!". That's the way I felt the first time I watched "The Matrix". And 24 years later I still feel that way, Dawn Marie.

I really enjoy your reactions! I saw this movie in the theater in my late teens and one of my friends wasn't able to keep up with the storyline and fell asleep. At the end we nudged him awake and he asked "Who won?"
