I've been going to movies since the early 1970's and when this came out the impact and utter astonishment at what we were seeing was unlike anything before it, it was so far beyond next level we couldn't process all of it. I've never seen a crowd so awestruck and blown away by a film, it was a surreal experience I'll always cherish.

Hugo starred in V For Vendetta. He was a last minute replacement for the original actor who wanted V to take his mask off once filming began. Hugo understood the character and gave a good performance. It's up to the viewer to decide if he was a good or bad guy. Check it out around November 5th.

Neo survives because he realises that, because the Matrix is fake, his "death" in the Matrix is something that he can change. Trinity speaking to Neo, and kissing him, in the real world is how he reaches that realisation. And, just as the Oracle foretold, either Morpheus would die or Neo would, and Neo becomes The One in his "next life" (after he dies).

Another fantastic role for Hugo Weaving is as Desmond Doss' father, Tom Doss, in the movie "Hacksaw Ridge." It's a supporting role, but it's really a great role, and the movie is really spectacular. It's about Desmond Doss, who enlisted with the army after Pearl Harbor during WWII, under the impression that he would be a medic, and not required to carry any firearm as a conscientious objector. He became the first American soldier to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. It's based on a true story, and the reason I say "based on" is that the producers of the movie left out or reduced some of the more heroic actions taken by Doss, because they simply wouldn't have been believable by an audience. For instance, they left out the fact that he was suffering from Tuberculosis when he performed many of his heroic deeds, and he eventually lost a lung.

My favorite thing is that everyone gets sucked into the big question, "How is Neo still alive after getting killed?" Thing is, a combination of his being the One and Trinity kissing him, it's been called "The Power of Love meets The Power of Logic". Basically one of the gifts of the One is, clearly, to transcend the Matrix being able to tell him that he's dead. He feels her in the real world, and realizes that he's still alive, and that just completely unlocks all his power.
@One.Zero.One101

This is not your typical "Power of Love" trope that you see in so many movies. The trope is usually used as a Deus ex Machina, but in this one there is a clear setup and payoff and it is woven into the plot. The Oracle says to Trinity that "The one that you love will be The One". That's why Neo can't die, he MUST be The One because Trinity loves him. It's not the kiss that brought him back to life, it's the creative use of the Chosen One trope.

My only complain about the scenario is that people who get plugged on the ship should NOT cough blood while they are getting killed or beat. Only their mind is being affected by the damages. Their physical body in the real world should remain intact. Until they die where your life signal (don't know the name in eng) go flatline. But i guess it is more spectacular for the viewers.

But nobody cared, because it was a well-written story, with compelling characters, and perhaps most importantly, it didn't beat you over the head with virtue signaling. I got to see a The Matrix at a press screening the week before it opened & it absolutely blew my mind. It was so different to anything that had been seen in such a long time & visually; even now, is stunning to watch. Originally, the scene between Neo & Cypher was much longer & also alluded to why Cypher hates Morpheus & why he wants to be reinserted to The Matrix. The script for the scene went as follows Cypher: I’m going to let you into a little secret here. Now don’t tell him I told you this, but ain’t the first time Morpheus thought he found The One. Neo: Really? Cypher: You bet your ass. It keeps him going. Maybe it keeps all of us going. Neo: How many were there? Cypher: Five. Since I’ve been here. Neo: What happened to them? Cypher: Dead. All dead. Neo: How? Cypher: Honestly. Morpheus. He got them all amped up believing in bullshit. I watched each of them take on an Agent & I watched each of them die. Little piece of advice: you see an Agent, you do what we do; run. Run your ass off. A later scene also had Neo confront Morpheus about him being the sixth & final person who could be The One; this is also hinted at by the child with the spoons…..if you take note of how many spoons he has. Also, if you want a little insight into how the war against the machines began, I highly recommend the two animated shorts The Second Renaissance Pt 1&2. In many ways, those two shorts would make an incredible, live action prequel to The Matrix films…..something I’d happily have sat down to watch, over the terrible fourth film.

Think of the agents like system administrators who pretty much have access and control over your office computer systems. They can jump into user files (people who are "plugged in" to the Matrix) and pretty much do what they want. I likened the "unplugged" users like hackers--they can infiltrate a computer system and wreak havoc (or possibly move around carefully to remain undetected) but may not be able to access key files (the "answers") but they can also be deleted from the system (killed) if they don't get out before the administrators locate and delete them.

I think one of my favorite details that hardly anyone seems to notice in particular, is how right after Neo explodes Agent Smith he flexes and just straight up bends the physical space around him. That's what I think the later movies really got wrong, they act like Neo has this one power that lets him stop bullets, and another that makes him the most OP at kung fu, etc etc... But no, those are just things he can do as a result of being able to bend the entire structure of the Matrix on a whim. Like I get that it's hard to write a story with stakes when you have a character like that, it's the old "superman" problem, but then they either shouldn't have built up Neo this much in the first place or shouldn't have continued to use him as the central focus of the other movies.

By kissing him, I think trinity was forcing his real body to breath. It's the body's natural survival mode. His mind was making him believe he was dead. When she cut off his air by kissing him, the body sent a survival mode signal to the brain to take a breath, which also sent the message that he's not really dead. Once he took that breath, his matrix mind figured it out and his special coding kicked in. He got up and took control. The Oracle knew that Trinity would be hesitant to act on her feelings until the appropriate time. So to most people it just seemed like a corny fairytale moment where he wakes from a kiss, but it was actually logical science. Btw...Neo is an anagram for One, as in The One.

This movie was and still is one of the most ground breaking movies that has influenced pop culture. It hit on some of the most profound questions of reality and really made everyone question what the world is that they live in. You've probably already been exposed to a lot of the ideas this movie presented from other pieces of media which is why you caught on pretty quickly but those were likely influenced by this movie. I remember some people at the time who just couldn't grasp what the movie's full meaning was because at the time it had a lot of people confused. Also considering everyone saw Hugo in The Matrix first before seeing him in LotR but not as a bad guy was quite a throw off. Another thing is he was supposed to be the Wolverine in the X-Men movies that were made around 2000 as well.

My favorite detail that I think most people miss is the fact that the Oracle never told Neo he wasn't the one. She looks at him, he says "ahh" and she says "Hmmm that's interesting, and then you say," and then NEO says "I'm not the one." She responds, "I'm sorry kid, you got the gift, but you're waiting for something." The Oracle never told Neo he wasn't the one.

Hugo Weaving should have given oscars for being in the most increadible trilogies in human histories! The Oracle gave the Neo a substance program as cookie. Trinity's kiss triggered the process and he became the One. Hope you gonna watch second and third movies lady.

Something I find interesting is that originally the concept of the Matrix was not that it used the humans bioelectricity as a powersource, that was a change that came because executives thought audiences wouldn't understand the original concept. Originally the Matrix used the humans brains as processing power, literally robbing humanity of their brain power & their ability to think & be aware. That's why you see Neo just sitting at his desk with the monitor off just before Morpheus sends him the phone, he was just sitting there not thinking because the Matrix was using his brain power to process data. This explains why becoming conscious of the truth lets people affect the Matrix, because their brains could be used to manage the reality of the Matrix when they're unconscious rather then actually sleep.

"Oh, so he just has to decide that's who he is?" Quite the opposite - he just has to not have to decide. As soon as you're deciding, you're going against something. The act of deciding acknowledges there's a different reality to what you are deciding, thus acknowledging and creating the whole fight you vs. reality, which you will inevitably lose. What you need to do is just do the thing, without deciding or thinking whether it will work or not. Same as Neo did when he dodged those bullets. He didn't decide, nor think about it, he had no time for that. He just did it.

Remember when Neo broke the vase and the Oracle said would you have broke it if I hadn't said anything that's why Neo came back to life because Trinity didn't tell Neo what the Oracle told her falling in love with him

I remember seeing this the night it was released in theatres while the Y2K threat was on the horizon and I couldn't figure out why the Agents that came to Neo's workplace looking for him couldn't track his movements from one cubicle to the next. The Matrix is supposed to be our reality and the machines control every aspect of the Matrix, because it was created to pacify humanity into never questioning the Matrix, so how can the system that controls every aspect of the Matrix not be able to locate a threat to the entire system. In the interview room Agent Smith literally opens a folder that has EVERYTHING Neo has ever done, all the way down to common everyday chores, and somehow the system that created that universe doesn't have to ability to track an individual inside of an office building from the elevator to their cubicle? Morpheus says the agents are "Everyone and no one, they hold all the keys" meaning everything in the Matrix is controlled to the most minute detail.

As an Australian, I see him as so much more than 'just' Elrond and Agent Smith, but I still love that he's getting so much love from all over the world. My favourite movies of his, though, would have to be Proof and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert (with Guy Pearce and Terrence Stamp). I also love that his niece Samara is getting some pretty great roles too.

Can you please, please watch 'the Animatrix' next? It is an anthology of world-building shorts done in different animation styles, and its from the same writers. Not too many consider it "part" of the Matrix series, but it really does give a lot of entertaining exposition on the Matrix history, different perspectives folk have within the Matrix, and weird consequences such a universe would have. It also makes watching Matrix Reloaded a much smoother transition. Thanks for the content!

This movie holds up as a phenomenal example of setup and payoff in writing. There are SO MANY things one character says or does early in the movie that comes back and is either repeated in a new way or comes true later in the movie. The Oracle tells Neo he's not the one, that he's "waiting for something ... another life maybe", then at the end of the movie he literally dies and comes back with a new life. In his next life he IS the One. As you caught and pointed out yourself there's also the pretty quick turnaround with Cypher saying it would take a miracle and then Tank "miraculously" surviving what Cypher did to him in order to save Neo, and "when you're ready, you won't have to (dodge bullets)" -- in the middle of the movie Neo dodges bullets (mostly) showing he's powerful but as the Agent says "only human", then at the end of the movie Neo stops the bullets midair and doesn't have to dodge them because he's come into his own as "the One". And so on; there are many examples but those are a couple of the biggest standouts. Basically the entire movie is already "known" by the midpoint of the movie, it's just not clear until (usually many) repeat viewings to pick up on them.
