6:33ish: the older I get, the more acutely I feel the wish fulfillment aspect of those premises 🫠 I recently re-watched The Sorcerer’s Stone (because children) and that wistful ache watching Harry get whisked away from the Dursleys to go live in a big magical castle and whatnot was so much sharper than it was when I was a teenager

I fell asleep watching a KZfaq video and woke up to auto play on your Dahmer video (I’ve never seen the series) I paused. Read the title. Made the decision to start from the beginning. Since I just like when people dissect pop culture. It helps me see things differently or gives me clarity on some of the things I’ve never really understood. Your content is fun, informative and you are very well spoken. I can’t wait to see your channel grow and I’m looking forward to the next upload Also edit: holy fuck I was a nice guy too. I’ve definitely grown up a lot. I’m so happy I got out of that. I’m not exactly sure how or when I got out of that headspace. Maybe it was graduating highschool and getting out of the house. Maybe it was reading a fucking book. Maybe it was me becoming less worried about being desirable to women and just being myself. You’re dope. Thanks for making this content

This is honestly the first commentary video I've seen in support of Resurrections, and the fact that you didn't even need to talk about the movie itself was very interesting. Personally, I'm not a fan of Resurrections. I don't think I ever will be. But having context into how and why it was made, and how it helped Lana Wachowski with her grief gave me a respect for the film that I just didn't have before. Thanks for making this

Honestly, when he said "i used to be an incel" it actually made me trust and love him more cuz this proves he is someone how can observe their current beliefs and see how their wrong and abandone them as a result. Some people (correct or incorrect as they may be) do not have that capacity.

This is the second video I’ve seen produced by this channel where JK being a transphobe and trying to “take their rights away” has been mentioned. I see zero truth in that statement. When the entirety of a country states “a woman is anyone who says they’re a woman” and males are allowed to compete in female sports at the expense of women’s dignity and physical safety, it’s not trans people’s, but female women’s rights that are being taken away.

36:39 - 38:11 - This is wonderfully put, I'd never seen this interview before ❤ I'd add to it by saying that execs now seem to know that they don't really know what their audience wants, and they try to compensate by studying marketing research data, which seems to be the next, even worse step "forward" in ruining mainstream art. Used to be as simple as hiring an artist who has already generated success on their own to be that arbiter of taste. But now, so many of the execs are such narcissistic psychopaths that they feel that kind of relationship of trust is somehow a forfeit of power with which they are so uncomfortable they'd rather keep alienating audiences and popping the bubbles of their own products.

On the note of artists fearing misinterpretation: I get that so much, as an aspiring writer; it's an ever present fear. Heck, I scrapped a 70K+ word apocalypse novel because I was worried people would use it as some fash shit. It was gritty, violent, and even the main character was an authoritarian, but that is supposed to be bad, but I did make him pretty awesome. I mean, it ends badly for him, but you know people would focus on the first half of the book.

In like a third of the video, in the beginning of the "What's Your Point?" Section. It made me think about my (Mostly negative and critical) opinions on The Last Jedi, and how the fuel behind them has changed as I've gone into my teen years. My sentiment on TLJ has been influenced by MauLer's very long videos on it, opinions on the other side (Which I can understand at best, and be baffled at worst) and the poorly argued opinions on it that have a similar sentiment as I do. Personally I feel that TLJ is a deconstruction made by a dude who didn't even like the thing he was deconstructing, in turn seems like he didn't take the effort to obtain a greater understanding. Rian Johnson is a very skilled director, being evident with directing some Breaking Bad episodes, Looper, and Knives Out. So I understand why he was chose to direct the second movie in the sequel trilogy. The issue with it, is that every trilogy needs to have a set end goal, which the sequels did not have, this has been supported by JJ Abrams, John Boyega, and Daisy Ridley. The trilogy would've been significant better as long as it had a concise endpoint. Unfortunately that endpoint was never established before the second movie. So Rian, with his intentions on making a deconstruction, does it in the middle of a doomed trilogy, and puts an entire franchise into relevancy hell. The worst part of the deconstruction, is that it seems to come out a place of contempt for what came before it, instead of a place of understanding, or passion, as the greatest deconstructions Watchmen, Red Dead Redemption, Twin Peaks The Return, American Psycho (1991 Novel), Fight Club, Mulholland Dr., and others have done before TLJ. That's the primary issue with it, TLJ is made out of contempt and bitterness over genuine passion and interest, or a place out of internal struggle. It is made to destroy, not to understand, and the worst thing a deconstruction can do is to destroy and misunderstand, as The Boys comic did.
@meeptop
@meeptop Жыл бұрын
I find that perspective fascinating, honestly! I agree that the clear lack of direction and franchise planning by Lucasfilm really is the downfall of the trilogy as a whole. Like you said, if the trilogy had ended on a meaningful and resolute conclusion (instead of the baffling retread/backpedal that was TROS) then I think people would be much more forgiving of the sequels with time. As it stands, the best I can personally hope for is that I can reach the acceptance stage of grief rather than reappraise them. But if the prequels can be reappraised, I don't see why the sequels can't. As for The Last Jedi, for me, I've always thought that it came from a place of not only reverence for Star Wars, but from a deep understanding of mythological storytelling (mostly with everything involving Luke). It is a deconstruction of myth, which inherently involves a little tearing down, but by the end it feels like the film is fully reinforcing its power by the end. When Luke saved the last of the resistance, and later we see the kids in the stable telling stories about what Luke did, that to me clearly stated that myth is inspiring and shouldn't be destroyed. That the story of Luke Skywalker that we heard as kids, that inspired us, was important and transformative even if it wasn't "real." Fully embracing that what Star Wars means to fans is more than iconography. Again, that's just my interpretation though. My personal problems start and end with Finn and Poe's subplots feeling less emotionally impactful than the Kylo/Rey/Luke narrative, and (as you pointed out) its place in the sequel trilogy. I think as an insular piece of Star Wars deconstruction (and reconstruction) it works fairly well, minus the necessary context you need from Force Awakens. It's the middle chapter of a trilogy though, and it will always be viewed as such to one degree or another. I personally can't wait to see what Rian Johnson does with Star Wars when he hopefully returns to tell his own trilogy, unburdened by the creative limitations and expectations of the Skywalker Saga. I think that'll be the mark as to how much he truly understands and loves Star Wars. All that being said though, I can't blame you or anyone at all for disliking The Last Jedi (or the sequels in general). All I really want to advocate for is for people to think critically about why they do or don't like them, and articulate their feelings as best as they can. Which I think you did a brilliant job of!

RJ literally prolly only seen JJ Abrams's SW, said "fuck it, I hate that shit" and went with it. or sth. idk, he's a good director and I lost all my hope for Disney's SW (which tbh, made them "better"... def mainly TLJ... cuz well, FA is too nostalgia based for my likings and... I won't watch RoS ever. fuck that movie. I won't. I would, but I won't. it spits on my most loved maistream franchise and I will fucking hate nonstop. idc, Palpatine returning is literally just artistic thirst trap for people who won't accept things ending. tbh it's the same with the sequel trilogy for me, except for TLJ cuz Rian just went over the board to state that isn't Star Wars, like is, but yk, not really). ah sweet sweet schizo rambling.

It is honestly so refreshing to see someone openly admit when they were wrong before and show how and why they've grown away from that opinion. For all the alt-right pipelines out there, there is still some "reason pipelines" and perhaps a few people in real life for all of us, that can steer us into becoming better people and learning from our mistakes. Really appreciated this! You're perspective and vulnerability gives it certain depth different from the type of analysis I tend to find myself consuming. I'm deeply immersed in queer and fem perspectives and discourse-centered discussions over a lot of current media and the the reception thereof. As silly as it may seem to say so, it feels refreshing to hear well informed, introspective analysis from a guy's point of view, particularly coming from someone with a history of having been influenced or felt spoken to by the kind of ideas that formed around the franchise. That is not to be all "we never hear what men really think anymore" pickme bs, but it does add something valuable to the analysis of the meaning for something like this existing in the first place. I'm especially thankful for this honest and true to your values speech that thoseyounger people maybe heading for the wrong direction and being taken advantage of for the sake of seeking acceptance and solidarity can hopefully relate to. I also respect the way you lay bare your intentions, albeit for the unfortunate chance of wilful misunderstanding due to a topic that a lot of people feel protective and defensive about. In addition to making an effort to address those sentiments beforehand so as to gain some leverage against malicious feedback, it actually functions to make content as refined as yours more approachable too. I hope it doesn't come accross as deeming it redundant or patronizing, because that's precisely not my experience at all. It's simply just that sometimes there's worth in being blatant about what you're trying to express, not only for shielding from someone twisting your words against you, but especially for those new to this type of criticism (non-derogatory) learning the difference and possibly reacting less uncritically to similar commentary that is not trying to be defamatory to beging with. I'm way too in my head about the aspect of interpretation and intention like at least 5 meta levels above the contents of the video, I have no way of knowing whether my words are understandable at this point. So anyway, very enjoyable work!

38:33 - Good sir. I respect and often agree with your critical perspectives. That said: TL;DR: According to the bare basics we learned about writing preexisting characters in our 2nd semester of screenwriting, Luke's writing in Ep. 8 was objectively bad. It reads like it was made for a much lower brow genre, like Expendables franchise level stuff. There's plenty of people projecting onto characters, and plenty of bad attempts to assess why something felt like it was bad. But man. My professor and classmates would have had some notes if Johnson had been in our class. I don't even mean the hermit stuff Hamill was vocally opposed to. That actually tracks well with Yoda and Ben IMO. I mean the "Nah ima just kick your ass" bs at the end which was very clearly there to say, "Hey, young men, are you sick of watching the PUSSY SHIT from Ep. 6? Or sick of movies altogether bc your subconscious understanding of western story and character structures makes you able to predict things better than you could when you were a 7yo? Well check THIS gnarly shit out! HaHA!" Like when the narcissistic neighbor kid joins you in playing with your Star Wars toys and cares way more about shock and attention than being true to the movies' tones or characters, and the rest of us are forced to try and work together to make a cohesive story around constant subversions that exist strictly for their own sake. Had Luke's story been delivered as a tragic downfall, it would have worked great, and could have even been used in a fun or compelling way. Like, "Uh-oh, Luke's kind of a rage-filled bitter wild card now, what's he gonna do next???" Or, "Luke's on some dark side shit, he's fallen from grace as the embodiment of 100% Good. How's he gonna recover?? Is Rey gonna save him now that his bffs are dead???" But no, the entire Star Wars movie was saying, "This nihilistic, aggressive behavior is cool and good." I'm not saying there isn't a time and place for fighting one's antagonists. But the movie didn't take us through Luke's journey to that mentality very well at all. End rant. For now.

Matrix 1 was a movie on it's own. Sequels rehashed elements that already were copied from some of the greatest Hong Kong action movies but slower and included welcomed philosophical innuendos. For the rest the last movie just confirmed (by screaming it) that directors didn't want to propose a follow-up of their first effort.

I don't know if I buy the notion of the movie being "bad on purpose" I think there were choices made that were deliberate commentary, but it's more likely the movie is bad because nobody wanted to make it and they rushed it out as fast as possible. That's the reason why Hugo Weaving isn't in the movie, they didn't want to wait x number of months to shoot his scenes, they wanted it done and over with. Because by the logic of "Matrix 4 is bad on purpose" then is that the case for Speed Racer and Jupiter Ascending? Is their horrible writing, direction and sometimes vfx trying to make a statement of some kind? Matrix 4 was most likely never going to be good and I'm not devaluing the intent or even artistry of what the movie is saying, despite how dumb it is, it's not being untruthful.

The problem with the critique of the furor surrounding this movie is that not only did it suck, the reasons for creating art don't make up for the failings of said piece of art. So you end up with people saying it sux, and people that hear that projecting their own ideas of what 'it sux' means to that person based on the most base things like perceived gender etc. Most people that said it sucked were attacked for being every type of phobic, and that mudifies everything.

As a language teacher and translator, let me drop in my my two cents on that last note: Any word in any language has at least two meanings just within that language. When translating that one word into another language, it can translate in unexpected ways to countless possibilities (I'm not joking, "have" in English can be one of 6 possible main verbs in Japanese, not including idioms or "have" being part of a verb phrase, and in most cases you use context to parse it out, and that is still open to personal understanding before we include art where one may be trying to simultaneously include or refer to multiple meanings at once and oh god, this parenthetical is longer than the entire comment, make it stop, make it stop, this is why translation is hard and there may be ten different versions of one artistic work translated into another language and the author's input is sometimes key for determining which is the "correct" interpretation while simultaneously being irrelevant because it doesn't negate unofficial interpretations) which, yeah. It's surprising how often something meant to communicate ideas from one mind to another ends up accidentally creating completely different ideas. (BTW, while I'm leaving notes in brackets of how important it can be to get these interpretations right sometimes, you ever translate scientific research from a language with no articles or plurals, and a casual attitude towards the necessity of objects or subjects in sentences to a language that almost always requires all those things? 'Cause I have. It was research on cancer treatments. It was a god-damned nightmare. I am forever thankful that I didn't need to do this with something like Spanish where even chairs have genders, or Ukrainian where for some reason there is a different plural form for less than 5, and yet hundred and thousand can be treated as singular.)

I would hate Luke in TLJ more, if I didn't dissociate this one movie from Star Wars canon in general. I mean, I do that for EVERY Disney's SW movie, but this one has some shit, some girth, some additional stuff within it that makes it a good standalone movie. I mean, good as for pop culture standards, but well it's good (you rarely see a villain be humanized and also given a lot of chances to become good and then fucking throwing that away - Kylo is great also hot also uhhhh uhhhh). also yeah, I understand Mark Hamill's hate to what they did to Luke, but the fans? I mean yeah, but it's not Rian's fault, it's the fault of THE ENTIRE FUCKING SEQUEL TRILOGY EXISTING IN THE FIRST PLACE AND SPITTING ALL OVER LUCAS'S MAGNUM OPUS. yes, yes prequel's are shit but they're more star wars than "objectively" (whatever tf that means) better sequels and sorry for it. I mean, imagine level of acting performance done in sequels but with Lucas's vision (by that I mean, creating sth new not specifically based on nostalgia). ah yes, more MORE INSANE RAMBLINGS!!!! (I am legitimitaly insane to a point, whatever tf that means. I'm literally bipolar.) BTW SORRY IF YOU FIND ANY REACTIONARY KZfaqRS IN MY SUBSCRIPTIONS I legit don't care to go through all of that shit no I mean, I don't want to fuck my 13yo self for doing this to me.

The Wachowski’s didn’t write The Matrix to begin with they stole it from a Black Woman! This is widely known & I’m sure at this point while you did this video you came across this fact! That explains why they never wanted to do commentary cause they are FRAUDS!!!! Serves them right to have all sequels especially the last one not do as well & aren’t considered classics. Another reason why Keanu Reeves best franchise is the John Wick movies by far!

I think you overestimate a cultural impact of original film, and I agree it is HUGE. But not to such extent. Its just one film in a well suited cultural landscape. Matrix was just in the right place in the right time, no more, no less.

Ok. Peace and love. The sequel trilogy has a ton of problems and i feel like it lacks rewatch value. That’s not because of how much i love Star Wars. That’s because i don’t think it’s a good movie trilogy in general-Star Wars or not. The fight choreography is horrendous, the writing was subpar, and it was clearly a cash grab. With that said. I was 100% expecting Luke Skywalker to be a grumpy old man who had failed and was giving up. The only thing is that i couldn’t imagine him actually about to kill his nephew. That was pretty out of character. Other than that, i was just… disappointed. Disney doesn’t care. And i was stupid to think that they would

This is absolutely amazing video and I will say to answer your question of if it’s a good movie yes and no no in the way of movies being to please the audience but yes in the way of it being a platform to tell a story the author wanted unlike say Last Jedi which was in the middle of telling a story and had someone put their own interpretation which went against everything the story was telling because it’s how they saw Star Wars this isn’t really a matrix movie to me it’s a movie using the maxtrix to tell a message to people and I think that is amazing I hope you see this but if not I still want to post it

The thing about The Last of Us 2 is that its story is obnoxious and distracting, The Last of Us 1 was a cool game, enough for replaying it because everything meshed so well, and didn't try to be something that it never was, and also be so smug about it, TLOU1 was not a masterpiece eighter. TLOU2 is too smug about its themes being brave and smart, they're not, they are shallow ideas like the first one, but were not so annoying. So TLOU1 is not the reason why I don't like TLOU2, but TLOU2 is the reason I didn't buy the remake. I dunno what are the changes, but i know they just can't to let it go, and that's why they want to backpedal so hard to rewrite the history. That's so petty. oh, i just got to this part where Joel died. as much as horrific that scene was, i don't think he deserved it, but also it's not out of left field for him to die like he did in the world of tlou, that could happen to anyone. What feels so obnoxious about it, is that thrre's too much coincidences before and after makes it feel not as good of a whole story.

Edit: holy shit, I did not expect you to change how I feel about this movie. I still have major complaints, but I never gave it the props it deserved for the subtext you explained. Thank you I'm curious about your feelings regarding Jordan Peterson. The left often paint him as an alt right dog whistler etc etc but if you listen to what he's really saying it's take responsibility improve your life, learn to be comfortable being alone. And that sounds antithetical to incels. I didn't find him back when I was also in a scarily incel adjacent headspace but tactics similar to his advice were what I used to get past that phase. I guess in general I've been tending more and more to the left but I just keep bumping into left leaning creators who come off like they don't even listen to the other side and just boil down everything they say and dispose of it with a sprinkling of ists and phobes and I wanted to hear your thoughts on that.

Why not try telling me the lyrics you're refering to? because you don't even know them yourself. You just bring up RATM in conversations to prove how left leaning you are, and that's it.

I have sympathy for the Wachowskis for being backed into a corner by producers., but that doesn't change the fact that this film is a failure in the same vein as the previous matrix sequels. Making a sequel to The Matrix in the first place was a mistake.
