The Matrix Resurrections mirrors the story of the first Matrix, even concluding with nearly identical shots. But the repetition is the point: Resurrections thoroughly interrogates the original film and its legacy to show that the story has always been about love conquering all.

If that's why she made it, I respect that. Because as a continuation/culmination of the story, it did absolutely nothing for me. I also appreciate the acknowledgment that one doesn't need to be a white male to affect meaningful change in the world. But from a storytelling standpoint, and in retrospect, I would have been fine with the Wachowskis stopping after the first movie. If not that, I would have been fine with them stopping after Revolutions, if only because of the cliff-hanger ending of Reloaded. BTW, has it ever been explained how Smith passed his digital "consciousness" to a human? In the end, my biggest fear remains that it's NOT over yet.

I like how the film is a deconstruction of the modern action genre that The Matrix films helped inspire. The filmmakers understood that there is no point in making it if it's not going to be a reflection and commentary on modern times, and the need to pump out nostalgia.

@@anthonymartensen3164 maybe. I wonder how much was due to covid, and also schedule issues. They had plenty of budget (more than ever), and the first one had less budget than any, and was arguably the best, so I think it's either time constraints, or Lana saying "fuck that" and not doing it. The shaky camera really bothered me. It's a worse movie for it, but perhaps a better social statement.

Amor Vincit Omnia. This is at the center of the Wachowski's work. Including Sense8. This is what I adore about them and also why I really enjoyed this film. It was never going to be what the fans envisioned and I think it was loyal to the core of their original work. Let's not forget this is a post-Neo world. This new Matrix was never going to be as dark and edgy as the one we knew before he came. And Trinity deserved everything that happened in this installment. I'm glad she and Neo got their happy ending.

I'm going to throw this out there, but when Neo saved Trinity in reloaded, Some of the incomplete source code got copied over to Trinity. That's why in Matrix 4 the "One" requires both of them together to complete the code. *the source code gets completed at the end of revolutions when Smith infects Neo.

Brilliant!! You are one of the few that see that Neo saved Trinity in #2 just like she saved/believed/loved him in #1. Their powers/beliefs/love always supported each other. They needed each other thru all the movies - goes back to the love story/comment above. The analyst knew how much power Trinity had and that they had to be kept apart. But he doesn't yell to kill Neo, when she gets unplugged and starts getting all her powers The Analyst starts yelling to "kill her". You are very aware to see how they all overwrote each other through out the movies in code/love/ beliefs.

@@magicalmanifesting888 That´s because he then realize Trinity is just getting out of his reach, Neo has been already out then. So of course he is getting after the one he thinks has less power at the moment, knowing that when they unite he is finished. Plus he was teasing Neo about killing Trinity the whole movie, so it´s clear he has a favoritism towards Neo. Though the truth they told us in this movie is very clear that the one is actually Neo and Trinity together.

I've got into learning computer science because of the Matrix. Just like Jude, I was 13 when it came out. From the get go, I've always acknowledged being "The One" as the union of Trinity and Neo. They are two halves of the same coin and not Smith and Neo. Whenever they are together, Neo powers up. After watching the fourth installment of the Matrix 9 times ; I believe that watching Neo, Trinity never realized that she, too, is the one. Think about it, that's why in the second Matrix, Neo chooses to save Trinity instead of Zion. Them two combined creates a unity that is near to essence of an higher being. I believe that's what religion is about as well. The whole Adam and Eve story. Alone they are nothing, but together, when United, they are created in God's image. BTW, all four of these movies is heavily based on philosophy and psychology. The general public wouldn't understand the deeper meaning behind what the Wachowskis have created. I am a huge fan of these movies. The relay soo many messages, especially the newest one.

Perhaps this movie could have worked if they simply scrapped all the fight scenes and just made it about Neo finding his way back to Trinity in the new Matrix. Sort of like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I totally bought the love story in the original Matrix and that scene where she revives him (or even where he resurrects her in Reloaded) gives me chills till this day. Even The Architect pointed out that what made Neo's version of The One unique was his attachment to humanity was more specific. The Matrix had always been a love story. Anyway, whatever they were going for here didn't quite stick the landing. Not with those awful action scenes. Urgh.

There is no "One," only the Anomaly. Neo copied the Anomalies code onto Smith when he deleted him at the end of the first movie. And then he copied the Anomalies code onto Trinity when he brought her back to life at the end of the second movie. So now Neo, Trinity, and Smith all have the powers of the One. That's why Trinity was able to fly in the 4th movie. And why Smith was able to go faster than the Analysts bullet time. Neo needed time to detox, which is why he wasn't able to fly until the end of the 4th movie. I actually loved the 4th movie. I loved all the sequels. Throughout the Matrix series Neo was always saying he wasn't the One, I felt Resurrections implied that Love is the ONE (we 2 R 1) & that true power & self mastery comes from positive social bonds, but the film never fully embraced this philosophy making it explicit in the narrative. I feel this is the same failure Star Wars & many other popular stories make since the Bible. There is no One, binary thinking is false. True power & super abilities come from the unity of unique, complex individuals working together to overcome challenges. When we can overcome our egos & unite our planet then we can all fly.

Thank you for making such a in depth review of Matrix Resurrections. I have been so saddened of the negativity around this film, but feel many people just don’t see the point it was trying to make. Films like these are special due to the narrative. It’s sad these days how the amount of fight scenes or visual effects are the priority for many. I hope more people get to watch your review, and then perhaps give a bit more thought to the film, and perhaps a little insight into our own world. Thank you!

I liked the movie. Especially after the ending of the trilogy 🥺 I loved how gaslighting and manipulative Neil Patrick Harris's character was 🤓 I liked the beginning and ending but there was definitely 20-25min that could have been cut out of the middle. The info from the second trip to Io should have been all done in the first trip, the dojo fight scene needed a new backdrop, the Marovingian was unecessary, the expositional "plan" for rescuing Trinity with all the big meaningless tech words was nails on chalkboard cringe 🙄 Just needed another edit. Someone in the comments said it would have been great if Neo and Trinity found each other inside the Matrix like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I thought that was really cool 😎 But I also really like the part about how some computer programs/machines and humans started coexisting outside the Matrix. Final Thoughts: It has two characters that we love back from the dead and given a second chance, new characters that meta appreciate the original trilogy just like us fans, amazing backdrops and new lore, mostly cool themes and action, and a couple of decent villains. I'd watch it again 😉

The movie is fantastic, especially the first half of it, the only things that I didn't like were the action scenes, not all of them but the martial arts scenes were too fast and hard to watch, kinda like most modern action movies, I would've loved the more choreographed, less busy action scenes in the first movie. It's a strange movie. Many people hate it and they kind of have a point. For me at least, the storytelling felt sloppy, convoluted and messy, and the action was very hit or miss. However, I can't help feeling the movie is being horribly misunderstood, just as the previous Matrix sequels were back in the day. Every Matrix movie has very interesting things to say and the more you dig into the details, the more things come out. A part of me suspects this movie was made this way to prevent more Matrix instalments from coming. So... mission accomplished, I guess? As you can probably guess, I haven't made up my mind about this movie yet. Probably never will.

Some of us do recognize something is wrong with our brains and we want some damn help for it, up to and including medicine. Yeah, the Take’s take on that was a little bit sloppy. I would personally rather say that the state of the world and what we are made to think and believe we should be doing is making a lot of us sick, and trying to figure out and live who we truly are is being supressed, just like the Analyst is gaslighting Neo about his own experiences and truth, telling him he’s sick for it and needs correction. This doesn’t apply to everyone, of course, but the way we’re chasing after material stuff and social media and constant pressures of life has certainly made a lot of people feel awful, and instead of improving society and people’s lives, they’re just prescribed drugs.

Thanks for bringing this up. I found that they dealt mental health treatment a low blow in this movie. I've seen this theme in entertainment before in the TV show, Manifest, which also featured a character being deceived by the main villain disguised as a therapist. It's unsettling because it portrays to the general public (who probably have little experience with actual therapy) that therapists can't be trusted, that the patient was "just fine all along," and that ultimately the therapist has their own agenda and is using the patient's vulnerability. It feels like the anti-therapy cliché has been around in TV and movies for ages (the pencil scribbling on a pad of paper, *long eye roll*). It shows just how much our society still hasn't accepted therapy as a real means to getting better. They will portray characters instead confiding in a family member, a teacher, a coach, a pastor, but a professional therapist? Nah. Those therapists must have ulterior motives!

The Take’s analysis of Matrix Resurrections is better than Matrix Resurrections itself. It’s wonderful that people can find meaning in the film’s narrative, messages and themes, and it’s fascinating that conversation about Resurrections is more fulfilling than the actual film, but the lightning in a bottle that was the original Matrix is impossible to capture again (which you acknowledge). In the coming years, this film is likely to grow favorably on the fans of the original Matrix, but for today, Resurrections is inferior in every way. Resurrections deserves respect, if not adoration…in my purple-pilled opinion. You knocked it out the park again, TheTake; nicely done!

This is an interesting take, and definitely one I felt the movie was going for but didn't feel like it landed as well as this video suggests. I felt most of the movie was lampshading its own existence, without necessarily challenging or justifying its need to exist. It felt like the movie knew it had nothing to add to the Matrix narrative, yet it threw in a little commentary to seemed like it had something to say. Like many modern movies and sequels, the movie and its inspiration/message should be able to stand on its own. Otherwise, it doesn't really have enough to say to justify being made aside from a nostalgic cashgrab. Not to shame, I mean a lot of us saw it and that strategy works. But it makes for very forgettable movies. (SPOILERS) I appreciate defending and exploring a movie that gets a lot of criticism. To me, however, I feel like a movie designed to explore these themes would be infinitely more effective than trying to squish an established franchise into a story that doesn't really mesh with the originals. Not saying that a lot of these ideas couldn't be explored through The Matrix, but it didn't land for me. The movie felt like it was trying to push the no-stakes romance as the most important part of the series, when the romance was one of the least compelling things in the originals (to me at least). It basically depicted the romance as risking peace and the world having no intrinsic reason to revive Neo or Trinity. They do allude to some ethical questions around no longer trying to get people out of the Matrix, but this much more compelling plot was minimally explored. Another thing I think is worth mentioning was that it dealt with the power decrease in its protagonists by weakening its antagonists. I think having Neo wake up from the Matrix again and needing to refire his muscle memory is an interesting direction. I am not necessarily against it, but it lead to one of the greater movie sins. The antagonists seemed to be much weaker than they used to be or conveniently allied with Neo when they needed a strong fighter. Movies best pull off a power differential when they explore multiple ways people can have power (e.g. maybe Neo being just as tactful as ever and strategy replacing the martial skill he used to fight with). I thought they pulled this off fairly well when Neo was mentally battling Neil Patrick Harris's mental influence in the early to mid movie. However, when the movie returned back to combat as a measure of strength, this seemed intended to show that Neo now had an equally competent team or whatever that message was. However, when the villains used to be so powerful they could rival "the one," it makes less sense for the current team to be on equal footing. Between relying on convenient loyalty shifts and weakened antagonists, everyone looks weaker rather than stronger. It's like the Avengers holding their own against Thanos taking a hit to their powers. Though this issue has less to do with topics discussed in this video. Again, I'm not against all the movie's ideas, but things like loyalty shifts need to be baked in the oven a bit longer in order to not feel too convenient. In the movie's defense, it did up a lot of the interesting questions and ideas explored in this video. But I felt like they never ended up answering "why do these ideas matter," just pointing out that they exist. And then in moments that they do follow-through, like Trinity flying, for me these moments feel like they just weren't set up well enough and were bogged down by the rest of the movie to land as intended. To clarify, there are moments or ideas that do land, but when the movie doesn't really convey convincing/meaningful stakes, even the good parts can fall flat.

@@anthonymartensen3164 I don't disagree, and I think that could be an interesting direction. To me, it felt as though the new movie was trying to rewrite the message of the originals (conveying that the connection between Neo and Trinity has always been the driving force) and constantly compare itself to them. I think reboots and movies like this do their best when they try to stand on their own with their new direction. I didn't get that out of this movie, but we all experience films differently! I appreciate hearing your perspective :) On a side note, the main reason I felt a need to write my essay comment was because it seemed like this comment section was filled with people who completely agreed with the video or people who had not yet watched it. I wanted to describe my perspective as someone who wanted to like it but felt it didn't quite deliver its message as intended. I liked how they show a love story without grotesque nudity and without a male gaze. All the female characters have a purpose even the glamorous ones like Priyanka and Carrie Anne are fully clothed, no focus on their breasts and bums. I think Lana being trans has been a strong influence in not panning in on the body, unlike infamously fhe transforrmers movie and most other action films. The love of neo and trinity is shown with looks. Facial expression, words, and hand holding and maybe 1/2 passionate but respectful kisses and embraces. Really tasteful and beautiful. I wish other directors would do this and stop selling s£x.

I appreciate the thought behind the film. But the movie I think is visually inconsistent with the other films. It doesn’t look or feel like a Matrix movie. I agree with the core meaning of the film but using the Matrix franchise seems wrong.

It's not supposed to look like the first three. Neil Patrick Harris' character explained that in his dialogue. Remember when Neo broke down the old system in the third one. It's a reset, that means it is going to be and look different.

Thats why the ending of The Truman Show is such a masterpiece. The TRUE MAN chose despair. We dont know what happened to him after he walked through that door. He didn't know what was going to happen but he chose the unknown over the fake and the worthless. We who love cinema and art cant seem to do the same. We need to know. We need certainty. We need a false life.

considering the matrix was originally partly an analogy for being transgender, i think the clarifying of the binary is a refference to nonbinary people
