Totally awsome explanation of khatra / thumb draw / spine correlation. I've been googling several hours by now to understand why everybody says different things! Thanks a million, dude! So, if I understand corerctly, this all actually means you can buy whatever spine you like. (as long as it is not so high to damage the limbs) and then just practice. For some arrows you'll do more khatra, for some others little khatra for some arrows no khatra etc...

But for me it is priceless. It explains with solid arguments of physics, what khatra is, why it works, and even addresses its weaknesses. What Armin Hirmer, for example asks and wonders about, is all answered here. In just one video. It even answered some questions of mine, which I had for our classic European way of shooting. I liked that. One of the best explanations of what happens to the arrow and it's relation to the riser I've seen, so far. Though personally, I think that the paradox only exists up to the moment you release the string. Everything afterwards to me was just the explanation of what makes it a paradox, to begin with, and how we have learned to compensate for it throughout history in different cultures.

@bambooarchery
@bambooarchery 2 жыл бұрын
Balancing everything to work for you. Or a simpler method that I prefer is to decide on a few, then stick with it. So that you can focus on refining a smaller amount of things. For example, I pick the stiffer spine and don't worry about how much it kick off the bow. Keep the release technique constant and only focus on how to spin the bow such that it hits where I'm pointing.

Hello sir: I was practicing this evening with a better thumb release protector, and getting tighter groups but all going more to the right side than before. And i noticed a consistent slapping sound, and also, the arrow wrapping was wearing out in a thin line where it has been contacting the bow at the fletching end. Even though the spine should be okay. So i was thinking i need to do more research, (maybe something more than just adding weight to the tip) and found your video. Now i know the purpose of the katra. Seems the spine is not enough! Great intro into this kind of shooting and what is actually happening. Thank you. Randy c

You're welcomed. If khatra is done right, there's very minimal contact with the bow and the arrow pass lasts really, really long, maybe even a bow's lifetime. If you'd like to experience a really awesome release, please check out our new hybrid horn ring. I've been using it for a while and it really makes thumb draw easier to achieve consistent performance. Less fatigue, cleaner, more consistent release.

A very good video, thank you. You packed a lot of information into your presentation. I appreciate that there is not distracting background, and no attempt to prove your points by showing the techiques - this would just lead to viewers attempting to criticize someone else's shooting because it is different than theirs - but presenting them in a factual manner and letting the facts and physics speak for themselves. Unfortunately, the volume is a bit low, at times you are hard to hear (at least on my computer). However, the 'Archer's Paradox' explanation is a bit off - do not confuse or mix up the paradox with the arrow oscillation. As a point for further consideration to finetune your analysis of the impact of release on the bending of the arrow: look at the angle between the theoretical line of string travel and the arrow shaft at full draw/with ideal clean release (e.g. with mechanical aid) - upon release, the force vector of the string is not in line with the shaft, but at a slight angle, directed into the bow. This is why even with a mechanical release in a non-centershot bow, the arrow first bends into the bow in its first oscillation. The motion of the finger(s) or thumb can then exaggerate this initial motion and together with the static spine character of the arrow will result in a weak or strong oscillation of arrow during flight. - I liked your scientific approach, well done.
@bambooarchery
@bambooarchery 3 жыл бұрын
That's for the feedback. I tend to use the term interchangeably between archer's paradox and the oscillation. But anyway, yes it's true and had been tested that even a mechanical release will not produce a straight arrow on a non-centershot bow. It is pretty much the same situation as thumb draw without khatra, where the lack of initial tail movement result in difficulty to clear the bow.

Thanks for this. I now have a better understanding of how khatra works and why. It also explains why my arrows always go so far right (I'm a right-handed archer) when I use a Slavic draw. When the arrow reaches the riser it is actually curving away from it rather than around it and since the arrow is on the right side there is nothing to stop it from continuing to go right (I think). My thumb draw does not have this problem and I was looking for an explanation.
@Stakken2
@Stakken2 Жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, I have the same issue that my arrow always end up about 1meter to the right of the target (at 18m distance). I use slavic draw + slight khatra + slight string twist. Did you ever figure out why? Even if I don't do khatra + string twist the result is roughly the same. If I shoot mediteran style (three finger draw) on the other side of the bow I have the same deviation but then to the left. We've tried stiff spines and not stiff spines and everything in between. With another bow the result is the same :D also tagging @bambooarchery5889. We (my trainer at the archery club) and I can't seem to figure out what's going on. If he shoots the exact same way he seems to be able to hit the target quite fine. What could it be that I consistently have a 1 meter deviation to either the left or the right depending on which side of the bow I shoot?
@stephenhammond1745
@stephenhammond1745 Жыл бұрын
@@Stakken2 Haven't been shooting Slavic for a while now. From memory, I think I had the best results using moderate string-twist (no khatra) and, with my bow hand, resting the arrow tip between my thumb and the riser. I was only shooting about 3 meters but seem to remember getting decent results. I prefer to use thumb-draw when shooting Eastern-style since I can get more consistent results, but I do enjoy trying different styles. It also may have something to do with the way you're aiming. If you're consistently off by the same amount, try adjusting your aiming point. Hope it works out for you. Let me know.
@Stakken2
@Stakken2 Жыл бұрын
@@stephenhammond1745 Thanks Stephen. You're right, there is something wrong with my aiming, I offset a meter to the left to hit the target just fine. I'm trying to figure out what it is I'm doing 'wrong'. 😊 The interesting thing is, when I shoot without really aiming with a fixed point, there is no issue. Probably I've taught myself to auto-correct for whatever I'm doing wrong. 🤷‍♂
@stephenhammond1745
@stephenhammond1745 Жыл бұрын
@@Stakken2 I shoot instinctively, meaning I don't have a distinct point. The sight-picture is different when I shoot eastern as compared to western. It also changes from thumb to slavic draw, I think because I hold the string closer to my face in slavic than I do in thumbdraw, because my anchor point is different. All that to say that aiming point changes with style, at least for me. Glad to hear you're having some success.

So for aggressively siyahed bows with prominent syring bridges, would a manchu type release be useful, or just overkill. I get by with gentle side khatra but I get a little arrow lean to the left. I use stiff arrows. maybe ill put more spin on it or twist after listening to your advice

Super informative and clear! I have a question though. If the arrow is released 100% clean with a mechanical aid for example, the arrow will still paradox it's way around the handle right? If that's true then similar to finger release on a center cut bow, thumb draw release on a narrower handle, or near center cut shelf on the draw hand side, could require less or no khatra to achieve straight flight? Thanks!
@bambooarchery
@bambooarchery 2 ай бұрын
If release with mechanical aid, due to the lack of oscillation to kickstart the paradox, the arrow remains fairly straight as it launches. This result in the tail of the arrow smashing very hard into the arrowpass, and then as the nock leaves the string, the tail kicks hard away from the bow, causing a massive swing which the shaft then catches the air and start drifting towards the bow. I've done the test and the flight is terrible, it is not possible to get a good flight with a mechanical release, unless the bow is already centershot. For non-centershot bow, mechanical release is no-go.

Amazing information! Do you have any knowledge to share about the Japanese yumi bow and the way it is rotated?
@bambooarchery
@bambooarchery 8 ай бұрын
The yumi is very inefficient when it comes to energy transfer to the arrow. The bow torque is forceful and intentional. Some may tell you that the bow naturally want to spin, but it is half false. The bow wants to spin 180° and so does all other asiatic bows. However in kyudo they spin 270° which is actually against the nature of the bow and is achieved by extremely hard torque on the grip.
@stefanhansen5882
@stefanhansen5882 8 ай бұрын
Thanks @@bambooarchery. I don't see the bows turning 180 when you (or others) shoot with asiatic bows, but you say they all want to. Can you elaborate on that?
@stefanhansen5882
@stefanhansen5882 8 ай бұрын
@@bambooarchery And one more question: Why aim for a 270 degree turn?
@bambooarchery
@bambooarchery 8 ай бұрын
@@stefanhansen5882 if immediately upon release, you open your palm, the bow will sweep 180°, which is the fancy khatra. But this method slows you down for the next shot, so often archers keep a slight firm grip and that restricts the bow from going much too far, stopping between 45°~90°.
@bambooarchery
@bambooarchery 8 ай бұрын
@@stefanhansen5882 in kyudo, many things don't make sense. For example the slow and useless motion that makes you a sitting duck in combat. The loud twang on release that wastes a lot of energy, but it's considered a holy sound in kyudo. And the 270° that is not only totally useless, but hinders combat effectiveness.

Correct about 90% - however the armor penetration part is not. The physics logic is sound, however the practical application of arrows vs hard armor (not chain, padded, etc.) but plate armor is wrong. Arrows used as shrapnel "grenades" against hard armor was very much a thing. Tod's Workshop did an investigation which demonstrates this, and what measures were taken against this shrapnel.
@bambooarchery
@bambooarchery 4 жыл бұрын
You may want to research more on why asian arrows are deeply tanged. Without the tang, the wood arrows would break easily upon impact as demonstrated in Tod's Workshop video. Asian arrows have evolved to include the tang for improving structural strength and survivability upon hard impact. Of course it doesn't mean that it penetrates armor 100% of time, but the arrow has to survive first for any chance of success.
