This test proves everything!!!! Any one says that it Doesn’t work can get lost. And i definitely have been doing this on my channel… And no one knows how it was truly done. This maybe the way that it was done. No one knows for sure. Only thing we do know is that the featherless arrow sticks in straight. And you did this and proved it 💯 percent.

Unless you are strictly training to be historically accurate for LARPing, historical reenactment, or a history channel documentary, shoot how you like and how it works for you. If there's one thing that I've learned from Armin Hirmer, it's that you make your style of archery your own. Yes, master fundamentals, but do what works for you, not what works for someone else. Love your channel. Keep up the good work 🏹🤙🏿🤘🏿

In my opinion the real and only bulletproof test would be “ slow - motion” video. I discovered it myself recently. The problem is Distance! For example shooting from 5 meters, 8 meters or 12meters, i get different results! So my arrows were straight in the target ( or not) depending on my shooting distance. Im gonna try and film it in slo mo just to see whats happening

There are so many different styles of khatra. Forward khatra or combined with slightly sideway khatra or only sideways like the korean. It depends on your bow and your preference. Some bows are Not good with sideway and some are too long for a complete Forward Motion. And some can do all.

I don’t know what the specifics of criticism for the first video was. But I assume people are comparing your advice to The Way of Archery and Arab Archery books, is that correct assumption? The former is fully dedicated to military (45-200 pounds of draw weight + full draw) and the latter is partially military oriented as well. The thing is that your technique obviously works at your draw weight and draw length (30-45 pounds at half or 3/4 draw?) however it might lead to injury at 60+ pounds of draw weight, especially the grip style and the movement of the joints during the shot itself would be problematic with heavy hunting bow and war bow. But again, for your purpose it works just fine.

Thanks for you analysis. I agree. With super heavy war bow I would not focus on speed of shooting but I would switch to precision and endurance mode.

This is Barton, I wouldn't want to be misrepresented here so to set the record straight this is not what I showed you to do that is keeping the arm bent to such a degree but rather to double draw but not to hold the draw with a bent bow arm .....now it is true the bow arm will be bent slightly when drawing to full ....but only slightly...this slight amount of bend is plenty enough to expand on the release and Hatra ....the k is silent. I have decided to go ahead and begin posting videos here on the KZfaq and there you can see for yourself what I am describing....until then if you want to study an excellent example of Hatra and the accompanying release I would highly recommend Mihai Cozmei or Armin Hirmer, they both have different styles however they are excellent examples of a form common to each . Study Dr Murat Ozveri if you fancy a side Hatra

As long as your hitting what your shooting at, that is the correct technique. The books and manuscripts are a guidlines. Need to find a generic way to teach thousands of soldiers, a few of those soldiers may modifify that technique to make it work better for themselves. Just think of how many cultures used bow and arrow around the world, well, that is how many (and more) ways to to do the same thing. Yes, as you refine your technique, there will be cominalities with the many other techniques. I teach and coach many different sports, mainly skiing & dynamic movement, I will explain the same technique 20 different ways until there's one that connects with my client. The most important part for me is successful skill development and smiles. I don't believe Charlie is trying to do anything historically accurate, but, he's just doing his thing. By doing your thing you've found your way of doing your thing. Have fun doing your thing brother🤙

Don't let nay-sayers frustrate you. If you have a straight arrow flight and hit things, you are doing it right. As I wrote in an earlier comment, I can just suggest using all the techniques in combination, but each one in fine doses. I realized that - for me - overdoing one of the movements too much ruins my accuracy. Now I'm doing forward, torque and string twist in one flowing movement, and this works great for me. I also don't concentrate on which hand is actually doing the release, because it really feels like both are doing it. It is more like a pumping action from both hands. And BTW: since you are shooting on the right side of the bow, you will always and forever do it wrong in the eyes of some traditionalists, anyway. One key ingredient for a happy life is to know when to ignore people that are not interested in bringing you forward, but just want to drag you down to their level in order to have a better feeling about their own decisions. Keep going!

I think in turkish archery, the do this test from very very close to the target. That way they eliminate other variables like aiming o the wind. You should see a dot if the khatra works. I like your approach to this kind of thing. That being said, I shoot for historical appreciation, and I'm working my way to 100lb... For those weights I think that form wouldn't work, but I don't know.

Hey. what is your actual draw weight? You use 35 draw weight bow at 31 or 28 inches by manufacturer? However, whats your draw length? Reason I'm asking is because I own Kaya 45#@31" 48" bow. My draw distance is 27 which means its 9 pounds less, so 36#@27 of that bow. I use 400 28.5" arrows with slighlty heavier tip. I'm quite new to archery and I wonder if its too heavy or not. Ao if you use 35# bow do you actually draw it at that weight or less? I understand you use different bows with different weights etc, but question is rather what is your prefer go to draw weight? I started to apply your teachings and instantly improved on first try, shooting at 15 meters distance and had spread around 40cm without miss on target. Previously I was often missing half of arrows.

In archery there are many ways to do it right and only few to do it wrong. I am always careful with saying "right or wrong", I prefer to say "this and that works for me" as long as I shoot my own style. Only when trying to recreate a special historical archery style, I have to follow the rules given by old masters. And, yes, bareshaft tests and paper tests always show the truth.

Odds are someome did it like you. I like to sport fence with 2 swords at a time. No one does it today but it was briefly taught in the 1920-30's and largely forgotten. You probably belong to a minority of archers who shoot this way just as I belong to a minority of ambidextrous fencers.

Your shooting is fine, if not the bare shaft would be at an angle or miss, what works for you, everybodys body mechanics, bows and arrows are different, some people overthink these things, or are talking out their backside, often from reading comments, by people, who don't shoot bows or might own only one and think they are an expert, keep experimenting and enjoying your Archery.

I agree, do what works. I have a hard time believing khatra was done only one way in all history. If I wanted you to try a different Khatra method, I'd say "try this method (list of reasons one might like the method)..." Positives persuade better than negatives.

I recommend to shoot from a distance of max 2 meters. This shows with brutality if the khatra works perfectly or not. If you only see a dot in the target it worked. Anything more and it was off. Not telling that I am there yet, but getting there 😅 I doubt though that your technique works for heavy bows. Imagine pulling a +90# bow with the arm not filully extended. I can't except dor someone like Arnold 😆

Yeah, there always will be people like this, doing their own thing by the book and stick to it - even against any odds. It's like getting to '11' by adding 5 to 6, and everything else is wrong. So when you try 7 plus 4 you're obviously wrong. XD The most sophisticated 'tool' on this planet is the human mind/body and every one of us have a slightly different setup - If I may live with this silly expression :) So, in archery you have the bow and the arrow, but these are only tools that you're fine-tuning with your mind/body, really. Archery is you, the method is you, so there are like million ways to shoot.

Hello Charlie, first of all for the people who may have never shot 20 meters with a horsebbow without feathers on the arrow. Only a master with a very good technique manages with a lot of practice to have the arrows stuck straight in the target. I myself practice this for a long time and to this day have my difficulties finding the perfect balance between khatra or whatever you want to call it (Koreans, Japanese etc, use other terms) and less variables. Your experience from running and a moving technique is unique and extremely important to the entire reflex bow/hors bow society. Charlie, you are probably the best archer at running shooting while hitting...thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. You have the respect internationally of those who know how hard it is to be able to do what you can do. Thanks
