The Midsize Sedan is FINISHED! Does Anyone Even CARE?!

Famous names like Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima are all that remain of a once popular market segment. With the demise of the Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5 (and Kia Optima in name only) and Kia Stinger, joining the ranks of Chevy Malibu and Ford Fusion, not to mention the Volkswagen Passat, it seems that the midsize sedan segment has all but vanished thanks to the growing popularity of crossovers and SUVs. While we wait and see what Mazda plans to do with the 6 and wonder whether or not the Subaru Legacy will soldier on, join me for a little pontificating on the current state of midsize sedans and if the market segment will continue to whither on the vine or have any kind of renaissance. My brother and his wife just bought a brand new 2023 Camry. They love it. It's rated for 39 mpg.

I hope that you’re wrong but I have a feeling the industry is moving in that direction…slowly. My go to car for everyday use is the Toyota Camry. In fact my family owns all sedans and no suvs 👀

I had always had big sedans, but I finally bought my first hatchback (2008 Honda FIT). With how expensive gas is nowadays, a person needs to be able to use their car as a pickup. My FIT gets 36 mpg and I have hauled a 20 ton hyd. shop press in it and a Silverado transmission. Hatchbacks make the most finacial sense for me.

I think that one way to revive midsize sedans is to make them liftbacks like the Arteon

Not a bad idea, and maybe that will be possible if the only ones left are considered niche products... kind of like the Arteon is now.

And the king of all liftbacks is Skoda Superb. That will be the last sedan standing on the planet. Beats most SUV on boot space.

I'm driving my Accord until it's last breath. Regular maintenance and that thing is pretty much immortal. Seeing what Honda did to the 2023 Accord, my hope lies with Toyota I'll get a coupe (maybe GR86) before those are completely gone and their prices skyrocket making it impossible to get one. It's sad seeing Karenmobiles thiving this hard despite the fact that 99% of the owners are mainly using it for coffee runs and as a status symbol

Yeah, it’s rapidly becoming a weird segment with strange offerings. As I said, I’ve always been an Accord fan, but this new one leaves me scratching my head. If the next Camry looks as good as the Prius and they sandwich the hybrid max powertrain into it, then it’ll blow the doors off the Accord. I guess we’ll see…

My brother thought about selling their 2010 V-6 Accord with 230,000 miles, when they bought their 2023 Camry, but all the buyers aren't happy that he still has the original timing belt on it and he's too lazy to change it, so their gonna keep it as a backup, until it dies. lol

Toyota and Honda aren't going anywhere, but obviously America gave up a while ago. The Camry and Civic are the two best-selling sedans, but now they got the market all to themselves. SUVs are big ugly looking things, so somebody has to keep the sexy curves of the sedan going.

I definitely agree! But I’m afraid the sales numbers will force brands to put their sedans out to pasture, even the legends like Accord and Camry. Maybe the smaller options like the Civic will remain, but I think the full sized sedans are a dying breed. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

@@jax1079i disagree... For one Sedans have and always will be... 1. Cheaper 2. Easier to Maintain, 3. Manuverable 4. Insanely good Gas Mileage Even if SUVs are the dominant going forward, there will always, ALWAYS be a demand for smaller vehicles. How do I know? The Oil Crisis of the 70s is the perfect example. Everyone drove boxy Cadilacs and Crown Vics, and had to pay so much in gas they got rid of them and opted for Datsun's Nissan's and of course, the Toyota Corolla, of which I drive the 2018 SE Model. Sedans as a whole aren't going anywhere.

Midsize sedans are not dead, at least for me. I'm gonna zip around in my 4 cyl 2010 Camry until the wheels fall off... and I plan to get a newer one! Aerodynamic, better handling, less likely to frontover children, easy to get in and out, decent capacity for passengers and typical errands, and fuel economy are just unbeatable in the sedan design. If Toyota ever decided to make a Camry "hatchback"... X-D I've been in SUVs and crossovers, but they're oversized for what they supposedly provide. And most SUV drivers I see aren't taking them on offroad camping trips - they're typically alone, in the city, and only using them for work commutes or buying groceries. If I ever had to upsize my vehicle: hatchbacks, wagons, or vans offer way more utility for the size and performance, but I think too many urbanites are oversold on the styling and "safety" of SUVs and trucks to consider these alternatives. And nothing is more scary than seeing someone in an Escalade doing tailgates at 120+ km/hr!

I think part of the reason the mid sized cars are dying off is, today's compact car is almost as large as a mid sized car was in the 90's. So if a compact can meet all your needs, then why upgrade. And if you do upgrade, folks tend to upgrade to the SUV or pickup truck. However, as more brands drop the mid-sized cars, those who sell them, might get that market share, because not everyone wants to upgrade to a SUV. I wouldn't be surprised to see Accord and Camry still selling in 2030, but after 2035...I have my doubts.

My 20 years old Skoda Octavia (VW Golf platform) has almost the same passenger and cargo space as BMW X5 or Volvo XC60. But it was (and is) twice cheaper. Those new tiny compact SUVs don't have any chance against it.

Automakers, particularly American brands, aren’t building desirable sedans anymore. Certain Japanese models struggled in the beginning, but now they’ve been around for 30-40+ years and have constantly raised the bar each decade. They have a solid loyal customer base. It’s hard to convince someone who’s owned a Camry and an Accord (each lasting 300,000 miles) and Malibu (that lasted 125,000 miles with transmission failures) to buy another Malibu. That person is likely going to stick with their Accord or Camry. If they live in the northern Midwest they might be a Subaru loyalist. Just my 2 cents worth.

I think you're spot on, which is why all of the mainstream American sedans have died out. What I think will be interesting as we shift to hybrids, plug-ins, and EVs is whether or not people are willing to go back to sedans if they offer something beyond just improved handling. (Sadly, I don't think that's really a selling point as much as it used to be.) If I can buy an EV sedan that uses its lower profile to go another 50-100 miles, that might sway me from a small SUV, but if the difference is negligible, I'm not sure people will ever go back to sedans. The good news is that EV architectures can potentially be more flexible than ICE powertrains, which means it would cost less for manufacturers to offer variations than it does currently. I have heard it said from some friends who are physically big that they feel too squished in a sedan. As the population gets bigger from over eating, smaller cars will be less favored. Maybe this is true today. Probably just one factor, but not THE reason.

As someone who is 6’6”, I don’t think it’s that large people feel too squished but more of a factor of it’s more comfortable and convenient to get in and out of larger and taller vehicles. (Unless someone as you hinted is fat, in which case you’d feel more squished in many vehicles…) At this point, it’s kind of a chicken and egg scenario: people feel more vulnerable on the road because there are so many large trucks and SUVs… so they buy a large truck or SUV and make others feel more vulnerable… and on and on. Just as we’re partially responsible for current automotive pricing (avg price of $48k is nuts), we’re partially responsible for 6k lb Suburbans everywhere.

Nowadays people want something SUVish with a big TV on the dashboard. Here in Europe we don't like sedans too much, but we love wagons. And they're also disappearing. We're forced by taxes and restrictions to buy new EVs, but there's almost no wagons among them. Just SUVs and crossovers with a tiny trunk but with the huge screen and for the insane amount of money... USA market sets the rules...

I remember the days 60s 70s 80s Coupes were the Thing, 1997 was the Death Year a lot of 2door Coupes Died MX6 SVX 8 Series More Gone , The Sport Sedans Replaced the Sport Coupes 2000s Now SUV Replacing the Sedans,

I wonder how much of this is cyclical. I was at the DMV the other day and there were tons of 2015-2020 model sedans in the parking lot. I don’t know what they’ll upgrade to next, but certainly if the only options left are Camry and Accord and that’s what those buyers are asking for, it will have the rest questioning what to do. I mean if you were going to recommend a sedan like that to anyone it would already likely be an Accord or Camry anyway.

I think you’re right. It’ll ebb and flow, but the Camry and Accord are both so good at this point I’m not sure anyone should even try to compete in a shrinking market segment. They kind of own it, or at least, they will soon enough. And once I get another round of vehicles, we need to set up a shoot! 😉👍🏻

I just bought a new Kia k5. Love it. I would have loved to have gotten a Camry or accord, but to get them with the options and trim I want would be expensive. The k5 is a good alternative. They come loaded

I think part of the reason might be because cars are ever gowning in size. Look at the size of a Corolla and Camry from the 80's to now. The size of a Camry in 1985 is thinner and shorter than a 2023 Corolla and only 3 or 4 inches longer. The Corolla has essentially become the Camry.

@@jax1079Not to mention the current Camry's Gas Mileage is insane for its size... So being able to drive a roomy car and spend only 30 bucks at a gas pump is a huge win.

I'm from Europe and fortunately we do still have some sedans, hatchbacks and wagons to choose from. But many people seem to prefer SUVs and crossovers now, so it is probably only a question of time before the sedans disappear here too. I think you are right that the majority of car buyers are not interested in handling. They only want to sit up high, nice performance in a straight line (which they never use, looking at how slowly most people enter a freeway) a soft ride and no feeling whatsoever of what is going on with the front wheels. Sad but true for the rest of us who enjoy the driving dynamics of a great handling sedan.

Mercedes still makes the E-Class mid-sized sedan. So do BMW and Audi with their 5-Series and A6 sedans. Mazda has the Mazda6, Subaru has the Legacy, and Hyundai has the Sonata. It’s not all bad news for drivers who prefer mid-sized sedans over SUVs and crossovers.

This is why I'm driving my 07 Lincoln Town Car as long as possible. There is a joy in driving a true and proper car nothing else can provide. My mom has a new Mazda Cx9 and it is smooth, but it would be so much smoother and better if it were a car. Literally just take the same thing but lower it to proper driving height and sculpt the body a little different. Oh wait, that would make it a wagon, and for some reason we can't have those.

I'm a new driver and I've always leaned towards sedans. I've bought a used sedan and I'd like to keep it that way moving forward, SUVs just don't move my heart like sedans do, unfortunately all I see here in Europe are hatchbacks and SUVs. If possible, I'd like the sedan market to have a new boom in the coming years so that I have better chances at finding one when I buy my second car.

I agree that the midsize sedan is eventually going away because manufacturers offer so many options from compact suvs and subcompact suvs to full size suvs. Buyers want more space for their growing families and more utility and capabilities even though most of the car will be used for errands and maybe road trips and dropping the kids off at school. Also commuting to work. I considered the CR-V or Rav-4 before I purchased my Camry. I also considered the Accord. CA gas prices kept me from buying a compact SUV. Dealerships are over charging for Hybrids so I couldn't go that route either.

Yeah there’s a practicality element that’s hard to ignore. We bought our teen driver a RAV4, and it makes so much more sense than an equivalent sedan. Sad but true, I guess. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

I started preferring small suv/crossovers while running as an independent contractor for courier companies. I no longer do that full time, but I still prefer them because of the cargo space. I have a 2018 Ford Escape and I just bought a 2023 Subaru Forester Wilderness, (my first non work vehicle)

Yep. In my area all the carpet steam cleaning contractors are using the Kia Souls and get 36 mpg. That's why I ended up finally leaving my sedans and bought a Honda FIT hatchback.

@My Life Thai I'm still on the fence about Kia's. I worked at this one courier service. They had a little Kia Rio as a company car. The engine went up at 60K miles. I'll have to look at more stats about them. I am sure, however, that the Soul is perfect for carpet contractors

@@katefoyder506 My brother's 2013 Kia sorento's engine locked up at only 80,000 miles and Scotty Kilmer's customer bought a brand new 2020 kia soul and the engine burned oil at 15,000 miles. 1 qt/500 miles. :(

Hey guys, greetings from Central Europe, you know, the funny thing about your brand is, how strict they are. Station wagons were popular in America in the second half of last century. In 80s/90s MPVs begin to be a trend, and when cadillac cts won died, it was end of American Station wagon. And now, the same thing is happening. Until (I expect 2030), American MPVs, and sedans going to be dead. In the mean time, mean time, here in Europe, we've only got rid of family MPVs. Vans, like VW Multivan, or Mercedes Sprinter are still doing good, station wagons are still quite popular here, and many brands are still producing them, hatchback are still surviving, only those family MPV are gone. I wonder, how long it will take you, until some American brands will reintroduce big full-size sedan back to live 😀 Because nostalgia will going to be a thing, after 2 remaining bargain dinosaurs will be dead 😀 J

The desire for trucks and SUVs was always part of the American DNA, so I’m not sure it will really be going anywhere. We used to be all about big sedans and wagons, but the versatility of SUVs and improving economy have shifted people’s desires. I’d love to see large, comfortable sedans make a return, but I doubt it will happen.

I think we will start to see more things like the Mach-E from Ford. It’s fast and responsive but it almost looks like a sedan that sits a little taller. Americans love their big vehicles which is why the top 3 vehicles sold are all trucks. I think we will see most crossovers and SUVs become strictly hybrids or full EV since the MPG will go farther and cost way less then now which makes them more appealing to buyers

@@MyLifeThai371 Two things: first, people VASTLY overestimate their towing needs and frequency; second, assuming they don’t, they shouldn’t be buying a Lightning for that in the first place.

A problem for sedans is they sit so low even compared to a small crossover. Sedans give less view down the road when behind a larger vehicle and they are harder enter and exit.

This is somewhat true, but they offer other benefits as well. They typically handle better and are more satisfying to drive, as well as returning better fuel economy. Thanks for watching!

Opposite for me, especially with the views I have on my sides and the rear you can see if a adult or child or curb is beside you. The bounce on suvs is also annoying af

​@@jax1079Not true at all, I can look down the road just as well in a Miata as a crossover. You look around cars, not over them. You would have to be 15 feet high to look over things.

yeah.... manufacturers do aim at the US public as it's their biggest market. But in other parts of the world, sedans and small cars are still popular. So I think the Accords, Civics, Corollas and Camrys will survive and will see more generations, but maybe not in North America. As an example, here in the province of Quebec, yes, SUVs are popular, but there's still a huge demand for small cars and hatchbacks. Problem is.... decisions are based on North America as a whole and we just can't get the models wanted. So here's to Honda and Toyota continued investments in their good sedans! If they disappear from this market, at least we know it might come back at some point (remember when everybody wanted a minivan?)

That's a great point! The cyclical nature of the market is certainly worth considering, and it'll be interesting to see if some of the new EV designs (many of which are sedans) trickle down into the mainstream EVs that are probably in development. If the Lucid Air captures everyone's interest the way the Model S did, maybe they'll be a resurgence of EV sedans to coincide with the Rivians of the world. Time will tell, but right now, the mainstream midsizer's days seem to be numbered. Thanks for watching!

I think they saved the Camry with its beautiful design for Gen 8, keeping it the best selling passenger car for 20+ years. Let's hope they can do the same for the Gen 9 and maybe throw in one of those MT like they did for the Corolla and GR Supra (obviously the 86 has one).

How long will Genesis keep their three sedans? My second Genesis (traded 2022GV70.3.5) I’m loving is a 2023 G80 2.5 AWD Sport Prestige is way fine. Like you marveled at my GV70 but missed my sedan fun.

This is truer than ever. 3rd rate models like Nissan Altima are now lower in production. When it gets this bad and all thats left are Camrys, Accords and the unpopular Sonata/K5 then RIP

In my country we used to buy a Crown Victory And Caprice Without looking for other company but since the ford stop making CV And Chevrolet Bring a car from Australia 🇦🇺 And sell it as Caprice In Our Country people start buying their cars from other company like TOYOTA And Nissan so let’s be honest The Sedan Future Depends On American Market..

Then it’s dead because no one over here wants them. The Chevy SS (imported from Australia) was a MAGNIFICENT sedan, but we stupidly ignored it here. Now you can’t buy one for less than $50k used. People woke up too late. Same with the Pontiac G8 and GTO, all based on the Holden Commodore. Shame. 😓

I convinced my mom to sell her piece of shit Ford Expedition that she herself regrets buying and went for a significantly smaller VW Golf and loves it. My old man has a Tacoma mainly for the utility and their garage is devoid of any SUVs now. I feel proud Both me and my sister bitch drive Sedans so that's that. I'm glad she didn't follow her friends with their SUV craze

I think the midsized segment looking toward the future will either be Accord or Camry. These are two legendary models. I think the Altima has always been seen nothing more as the “cheap alternative” to the other two. That said, the mid-sized segment will be made up of only two very reliable models in the future.

This is criminally under-viewed. I’ve been shopping for a large sedan for a while now, and the only real option for high mileage commuting is the Avalon, which is discontinued. 😑

@@Blank00 Saw that. Would not be surprised if the name sticks around. I think what GM is doing leveraging legacy model names into new EV platforms is not a bad idea. I’m also not at all opposed to a Corvette SUV since Porsche and Lambo have had insane success (and cash infusions) doing the same, which means we continue to get new sports cars. I’d love to see a retro EV styled Malibu or a EV Nomad station wagon design. The Ultium architecture could allow for such flexibility, which would be super cool.

Sedans are now a luxury item. If you want utility you get an SUV. But if you want driving pleasure and luxury you might consider a sedan as they are a more comfortable ride then a SUV and they handle better. So you will notice most (all) luxury makers pick sedans. Sedans lose out on utility but they with with regards to comfort and luxury.

There will be some growing pains for sure. I think plug in hybrid SUVs are going to be the natural transition for many people. That’s what we’re waiting on before buying Ms JAX a new car to replace her Suburban. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Honda civic has increased in size to match previous generation of Accord. So civic is a good replacement Accord.

They are dead. Crossovers are the replacement. Just like crew cabs have replaced all the big full size cars like crown vics. If I want a rwd vehicle Im left with luxury cars(never goin back again, audi, cadillac, bmw, old jags too un reliable). Trucks are my only choice..

You're wrong about the Chevy Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, and Kia K5 because those cars aren't about to be discontinued. Those parts of the video is just misinformation.

Rumor last year was that they’re all on the chopping block. Sonata refresh was actually a big surprise. K5 and Malibu will likely die soon, though, especially the Malibu which might as well be dead. It’s only for rentals and people with no brain at this point.

​@JAX Automotive Okay but also another thing to point out, the Acura TLX is still here and the Acura Integra made a comeback as a sedan last year so while sedans are clearly dying and while that is really upsetting, you were wrong when you said that Toyota, Honda, and Nissans are the only ones left making sedans. Not to mention at least some other non-American car brands are still making sedans.

@@Freshsink950 Acura is Honda, so it’s kind of one in the same, and luxury brands operate differently: nearly all of the brands considered “luxury” still offer more than one sedan while mainstream brands can’t seem to sell a midsize sedan to save their lives. The TLX and Integra wouldn’t exist without the Accord and Civic.
