What happens if you push yourself too hard? What happens when your body tells you to stop yet, you keep going? Portia shares how self-care brought her back to health and it can help you too. Portia is passionate about promoting a holistic and inclusive approach to self-care that takes into consideration how cultural and social factors as well as experiences of discrimination based on identity markers (e.g. race, class, gender identity, sexual orientation) may trigger one's need for self-care and shape one's willingness--or reluctance---to engage in self-care practices.
Preston has been an Assistant Professor of Public Health at Cal State Los Angeles for the past three years, and will transition to Cal State Fullerton, this Fall. Her research focuses on addressing health disparities and promoting health equity through inclusive approaches to self-care at the individual and organizational level. She earned her Doctorate of Public Health from UCLA, a Masters of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and her Bachelors degree in Cultural and Social Anthropology from Stanford University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Self care according to society is that it's focused on the individual ,it reflects society's value of self reliance. It's flawed. But what self-care really is ? Self care is any practice that help to manage anxiety and stress and promote well being. Self care categories : 1. Physical self care - walking or dancing or exercising. Medical routine and dental care. 2. Psychological self care - writing journal daily for self reflection that helps to set realistic goals , better understand needs and process stressful situations. 3. Emotional self care - having compassion for oneself everyday in life. 4. Spiritual self care - connecting regularly with source of faith n hope being part of faith community and spending time in nature. 5. Relational self care - spending time with family , true friends and partner. 6. Professional self care - pursuing work that is invigorating , setting boundaries around that work and establishing mechanisms for support from peers and mentors. Also , Decrease stress Improve nutrition & physical activity regimen Shedding weight ( healthy regimen ) Self care should be a practical reality after all. Love ❤

Few watch because most avoid selfcare because, like she said, we think of it as massages and spas! Who wants to watch a video about that... especially when we're not getting them? But I work with caregivers, so you know I'm gonna pass this on to EVERYBODY! Yasss!!!

wow wow wow wow. I am a peer educator at the University of California Riverside and I was assigned a chapter of "Holistic Leadership" in my class to create a video about! The chapter pertains to the development of the whole person and my thoughts were to make self-care the objective in order to hit the major points of the chapter. You conveyed the holistic words, moral like actions, and inclusive words that I was looking for to make my presentation relevant and more significant then just putting on a face mask. thank you so much!! I wish you well and will definitely be reverting to this video in the future. :,)

Diego, your message below me away! Thank you for taking the time to share this. First of all, I'm so glad to hear that you are learning about holistic leadership in your role as a peer educator. Second, I'm so glad that my talk helped you find your way to developing what sounds like an awesome presentation! I'm devoted to continuing to share my journey, so if there is something I can address on my KZfaq channel in the future, just let me know!

Splitting self care into seven different areas has really changed the way I view myself and my life. Once I started addressing separate areas, my whole life changed. I've never worked on all seven areas at once though. I'm just starting to do that so it's inspiring to know that is possible and has such great results. Thank you!

I'm so happy to hear this!! Yes, it took me years to work up to thinking through self-care in a multidimensional and holistic manner. I always tell people its okay to focus on making changes in one or two areas that resonate with you most, while staying mindful about where you are regarding the other areas.

Thank you, Kelly!! I am so happy that you found encouragement in my journey. Continue to learn from the choices you are making and find ways to take care of yourself that fit your lifestyle. Its easy to prioritize the work over ourselves, but in the long run, we end up selling ourselves (and those we love) short.
