I don't think you should do a pairs bracket or a bracket at all. Just have objectives. For example, start the first match as an "initiative" round. Whomever wins, then goes on the offensive. You have a series of "flags" or "planets" that you all have assigned and can be taken. If the person on the offensive loses a battle, the other team goes on the offensive and can start retaking territory before invading the other team. Do something like that so each match means something.
