A quick look at the Morrigan's name, what her personal name might be, and her relationships to other deities

May I just say I found the book very very helpful. It was one of the first I read about the Morrigan. I am researching her history thoroughly as I am preparing to dedicate myself to her as my main deity. She has called me to serve her in so many ways that I can’t ignore it any longer. For some examples, I have an enormous murder of crows (Like 50-60) that fly over and around my neighbourhood 3 times a day and constantly land on my house daily, these crows come up and eat food from my hand, they respond when I call, I’ve had a Wiccan Priest who lives in Ireland very close to one of the Morrigans sacred sites contact me and tell me that she wanted him to craft me a blackthorn wood pendant for protection (This man had never met or spoken to me before), and I’ve had other similar experiences with people like my Reiki teacher (Who is a Druid) tell me she is a guide of mine who shows up to every healing she does on me and during teaching sessions other students notice her presence as well. As all this was piling on top of me I began to understand she wants me to serve her for a purpose I do not yet know. Love Light Shadows and Blessings Upon all Who Read This {MoonDancer🌙}

Thanks so much for your work. I’ve combed through so much bullshit for so long it brings such a sense of relief to find your work. I appreciate your attitude of focused scholarship, cultural (modern and traditional) awareness, and actual experience. A blessing to find.

The way I always took it is that The Morrígan is a title, most probably for a group (kind of like a music band!). Then, you have Anu, Badb and Macha as the main members. Occasionaly (like a music band, again) members leaves or are replaced. And this is why sometime Nemain (Fae) is included instead of another.

The Morrigan is a triple Goddess.

Thank you Morgan! Such a tricky subject to take on! I believe that to a certain extent, it's a matter of 'ineffable' spiritual energy dynamics, which are just experiential........but that is rather a cop out, I realize! Anyways, your scholarship is always deeply appreciated by so many (including Herself I'm sure)! Happy Lughnasadh! xo

It's in some versions of the Lebor Gabala Erenn. Which admittedly is contradictory- as Gray discusses in the index of persons in the Cath Maige Tuired the real sticking point is whether its Delbaeth son of Ogma or Delbaeth son of Neid because both are given in different places. To be fair there's a confusing number of Delbaeths running around

I have a question and I guess it related to the morrigan’s parentage. As you stated in the beginning that the name is both a personal name and a title applied to other goddesses would those other goddesses that have the title of morrigan be of the same parentage as the version of the morrigan that is stated to be the daughter of ernmas and delbaeth? If not would each of the goddesses be from different sets of parents and all develop or earn the title of morrigan? Is it something that they develop later in life or are they born with the title? Does it even matter? Do we even have the answers to all of this😂

So, Irish grammar question. If Anu is a recreation from Anann/Anand, Danu is a recreation from Danann, and Morrígu is sometimes used for the name of The Morrígan, is Morrígu also just a recreation of a given name based on "Morrígan"? Or is Morrígu actually used in some source texts? Go raibh maith agat
@MorganDaimlerfairies4 жыл бұрын
Morrigu is attested in some sources. Like the examples you give it's a grammatical variation, whereas the name has been standardized to 'Morrigan' in English because English speakers don't conjugate names.

AS an Irish speaker I have never ever heard of the fada having any connection to what you describe.We use fadas as pronunciations,which change depending on where you come from in Ireland.

Crazy thought about the perception of son as a relationship with in a tribal society, how did the ancient Irish see "ownerships" of children with in a tribe? If children belonged to the tribe it might shed light on why linage gets so interesting in the Pantheon. I've no clue, just a thought.

Is there any information of the Morrigan being known as a death Goddess prior to Her being welcomed as a War Goddess? I'm not sure, perhaps this relates more to Badb(?) thanks
@MorganDaimlerfairies4 жыл бұрын
It depends a bit on how you mean death goddess. Her name may relate to the dead or spectres, of course, so there's that. She has strong associations across Irish mythology with battle and death in battle, predicting it or memorializing it. But not explicitly with choosing who will die or guiding the dead or watching over the dead after they die.

@@MorganDaimlerfairies I'm trying to dig up the reference in lore (of course I can't find it right now :-() but it had to do with Badb stated that She ".... was in the mouths of wolves before She was in the tips of spears and the rims of shields....." So figuring that perhaps Badb/Morrigan was more dealing with the passing of souls/spirits from life into death, prior to humans ever being around. Perhaps proto-Celtic(?) Sorry, this is vague. I'll try to find a reference for what I'm talking about. Thanks Morgan
@MorganDaimlerfairies4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure but that sounds modern? The bit about shield rims and spear points refers to the Morrigan in the Cath Maige Rath afaik

@@MorganDaimlerfairies yes, this came up during a discussion about Badb, hmmmm, I just got so excited and the words flew out of my mouth before I thought. I'm going to go back to that discussion and see if I can hunt down what was said and the context. :-) thanks for video

Ok, it seems that what I did was confuse someone's personal gnosis with something else that I'm looking into. Sorry about that. I'm trying to find connections to Badb during the Proto-Indo-European era. My misunderstanding. thanks a bunch!

So, though Morrigan is not connected, that Ive heard, to being a motherly type goddess, have you heard people calling her mother alot? I heard someone calling her that and it didnt sit right with me. Thank you for you your videos!
@MorganDaimlerfairies4 жыл бұрын
Its something I've seen more in recent years. It doesn't fit her mythology, necessarily, but seems to be more a personal approach. Not my view, personally
@ConnietheVirgo4 жыл бұрын
Also, can you tell me what you know about her being called Mother of the Gods?
@MorganDaimlerfairies4 жыл бұрын
I believe that's a confusion of the Morrigan and Danu, who is also not the mother of the gods but some people choose to interpret 'Tuatha de Danann' as implying she is.

Is there anything specific you feel is inaccurate? I've been studying Irish myth & folklore for over 20 years, read & translate old and Middle Irish, have read the original sources, and strive to be as accurate as possible when discussing the material. But no one is beyond making a mistake, so if there's a specific thing you feel I'm off base on I'll certainly look into it.
