My intent is not to controvert anything in this video. Simply offering another idea that ended up working best for me after owning multiple RVs on their associated trips, state campground and RV park stays, boondocking, etc, over the years. I eagerly bought all the gear and set up my almost new car to do the "Toad" thing on a multi-state road trip. It was a manual transmission Honda Civic behind a new, enormous Class A coach in 2003. I remember reading the warning sticker attached to the the top-of-the-line, self-adjusting A-frame connecting my very nice, daily driver car to the RV which said something like, "DO NOT even consider backing up while this thing is connected." There were also the other items to hook up: bug/stone shield to protect the car's headlight lenses and windshield glass, safety chains, light harness & probably more. From the driver's seat of the Class A, my car was invisible except on intentionally tight turns to verify that the wheels were spinning and the steering was unlocked at the start of each segment of the trip. Going down the freeway, that valuable-to-me, newer car could not even be felt to reassure that it was still holding on back there in the dark behind the coach. Cameras are surely more numerous and much improved since I did this. Additionally, I travelled alone, so nobody could walk to the back of the RV to check on the car as we rolled down the highway - if there were a rear window. When I see Toads going down the road now, I grimace for them as their tires wear and are pulled across potholes and over road debris. Some Toads are covered in grime. Thieves can see anything an RV owner chooses to haul inside of them. My car even needed to have the valet key in the ignition (turned to the ACCY position) to keep the steering lock open. Know that I am a multiple RV owner for vacations (bumper pull, 5th wheel and motorhome) and also a school-trained, Class A licensed tractor/trailer operator hauling crane pieces across state lines on flatbed semi-trailers, oil tanker trailers and 53' box trailers for work. You may guess that backing up a trailer in a straight line down a narrow alley isn't a problem and is not the reason I moved away from pulling a Toad. Since this is a "Stop overspending on flat-tow stuff" video, I'm probably barking up the wrong tree. Nonetheless, the solution (for me) was a 24-foot enclosed aluminum car-hauler trailer with a 10K gross weight rating. I spent $11k for it in 2018. Stick with me here... An enclosed trailer solved the "no backing up with a towed vehicle attached" issue, precluded dirt/damage/theft and tire/drivetrain wear for my car as it gently floated down the highway on the trailer's springs, and was useful for hauling bicycles and nice-to-have campground stuff one would otherwise choose to leave at home. It also became the fast, theft-free, weatherproof overnight storage space for goodies, tools and toys at the campsites. The rear ramp door quickly transformed into a level, elevated "deck" above the snakes, spiders and mud when lowered onto some lightweight blocks which lived inside the trailer. I drilled a 1-1/2" hole in its wooden floor to pass through an HD outdoor extension cord. Along with an outlet strip, this electrified the trailer's interior for lights, a mobile workshop and an air compressor (SO handy on the road!). With the extra cargo room an enclosed trailer provides, multiple RV and campground-related annoyances went up for negotiation. I toyed with the idea of mounting my own laundry machines in the front section of the trailer beyond the car tie-downs so I could do laundry anytime. Imagine never again purchasing quarters or forwarding/folding someone else's clothing to another machine while respectfully clearing out an idle "campground washateria" machine. A canoe and tall ladder could be carried out of sight on racks suspended INSIDE the trailer's roof above my car. A small, quiet, aluminum-tank air compressor with a 100-foot hose and a tire fitting/pressure gauge that actually fit onto the RV's inside rear dual wheels was always at hand. It was used to regulate the pressure of the RV/trailer/car combo's seventeen (or more) tires anywhere there was a public 110-volt outlet within cord's length. Unrolling a long air hose makes it simple to fill every tire on your whole road train without moving the compressor. (The miserable air hose contraption outside of one casino's car wash made that $300 air compressor investment an easy decision one time when I was out in the dark after a job finished and I REALLY needed some air before heading out of the RV Park for a night of driving.) Finally, the trailer is extremely useful behind a mid-size pickup as well as for hauling/protecting an RV's Toad. It has already changed a Chevy Colorado into a tractor-trailer rig for moving furniture, transporting ATVs and snowmobiles, appliance purchases, etc. Notes: 1) Measure the overall length of your assembled "train". My final rig was a 27' Class C motorhome plus the 24' trailer carrying the car. It measured 55 feet long when connected. If your RV is longer, you'll have to make sure the attached length is both legal on the roadways and workable in the campsites. However, it seems faster and easier for me to disconnect a trailer than a Toad car if maneuverability or parked length is a constraint in the RV park. 2) Ensure that your car's lower door sill height is higher than the interior fender height of the trailer. If my Civic had been the previous Corvette Hardtop, the doors would've been too low to open above the trailer's interior wheel well fenders. I'd have had to use the Vette's window to enter/exit the car once it had been driven inside the trailer. A person could certainly screw down enough 2x8s where the car tires roll to raise the car and its door sills above the trailer's interior fenders, but that's also extra lumber weight to haul around. Hoping that this is helpful to someone considering their wider options. A car-hauler trailer isn't harder to pull or connect/disconnect than a Toad vehicle. They are fitted with tongue jacks. Like a Toad car, one doesn't even attempt to position them by hand. Laying alongside the car inside the trailer to tie down the tires might be off-putting to some, but the extra cargo capacity and security of an enclosed trailer + the elimination of wear and tear on my car outweighed the time it took to run ratchet straps through 4 wheel rims. If a Toad seems best for your situation, enjoy your travels in peace and safety.

We used to use a tow dolly. After watching We're the Russos we purchased a jeep and went with the NSA braking system using a Roadmaster tow bar that I found new on marketplace. So yes for less than $1500 for everything and having it installed makes life so much better. Takes about 5 minutes from start to finish to hook up and less to disconnect. We often times say we should have done this sooner. Been using this setup for 5 years.

We used a Ready Brute on 3 different motorhomes towing a 2 door JKS. Its a decent towbar, works OK. My biggest squawk about it is that you have to be almost perfectly aligned ti get everything to connect and lock in place correctly. My wife and I did the breakaway install, ourselves. We just upgraded our toad to a 4 door Rubicon, and since it is heavier, and we have a DP with air brakes, we went and upgraded to a Roadmaster Sterling towbar and Air Force One brake setup for the toad. Simple system with progressive braking. Not cheap, but much happier with it and super easy to connect / disconnect.

I have to say I'm pleased with mine. I have the elite II towing a 2018 Silverado 1500. Somehow on my last trip, I lost a pin that connects clevis to baseplate. Passenger side came loose while going 60mph. One side kept the truck from breaking loose from MH. Was able to pull to side of highest but unfortunately, I took out a mailbox with the side of my truck but tha tow bar is impressive!

I had the same hitch pin pop off mine this spring on the passenger side. I felt it pop as I was going up a hill and looked in my rear view mirror to see my Jeep clear over on the shoulder of the road. So thankful it didn’t go on the drivers side and potentially hit oncoming traffic on the two lane road I was on. Not sure if the hitch pin itself or the thinner cotter pin that holds the hitch pin in place and connects the clevis to the baseplate was at fault since both had been lost. I was fortunate that because of going uphill I was only traveling about 45 mph and was able to pull over before hitting anything on the shoulder of the road. I had seen a video from KZfaqr “RV Street” last year on his flat tow system and he recommended replacing all your hitch pins with lockable ones that don’t have these thinner cotter pins. I didn’t heed his advise and get them on until after this happened. I feel much safer now. I’m not knocking NSA, as I love my tow bar. But I did have to have both legs of the bar replaced due to they were not locking in place properly and I had the legs sliding in and out during stops and go’s. Not sure if that may have put extra fatigue on the hitch pin over time causing the failure. NSA was great in that they covered both legs of the tow bar under warranty for no charge. So if your tow bar acts like it isn’t locking on one leg or the other be sure to contact them right away. They will treat you right and send out replacement legs if they aren’t locking in properly. I let it go on for too long simply because I thought I was doing something wrong for them not to lock. After finally calling them to say the only way I could get them to lock was to lock them first by hand and then try and apply them to to baseplate which is nearly next to impossible unless you line up your tow vehicle perfectly straight with it’s base plate at exact equal distance from each leg of the tow bar and apply each hitch pin through the clevis. Once I shared that with NSA they knew immediately the legs of the tow bar were faulty and acted quickly to solve the issue.

Good video and seems to be a good product. One suggestion is to install the bins so they can be banged out if they’re in too tight. If you’re on unlevel ground or at a slight angle, they might be very difficult to remove due to pressure without hitting with a mallet. Tough to hit when the pin is on the inside of the tow bar.

Great video! The complete system is actually cheaper now than it was in your video. I already had a Roadmaster baseplate and tow bar so I was only looking for a braking system. The prices are outrageous on the portable systems and did not want to spend that for something that could drain the toad battery. I found the Ready Brake system separately and can use it with the Roadmaster tow bar. Saved us tons of money on the braking system and it is completely mechanical. Thanks for the review!

Brake system). I like how quick the NSA is to hook up and unhook but our brake system is way quicker to install in a different vehicle(5 minutes.) (Also, How does the breakaway system work)? I will be checking out you tube for an install video of the NSA braking system. Thank you and MJ for posting this.

There are very few cars you can flat tow most have to be standard transmission or you will destroy the transmission check your owers Manuel and if they are you will sometimes need to remove the driveshaft. Also if you stay under 3000 lbs you don't need brakes . Like Ford fiesta ,fiat 500 ,Minnie Cooper, v.w bugs but nothing all wheel drive . Plus remember all of the parts that need to turn when the wheels turn. And don't forget to unlock the steering it needs to turn when the RV turns.on some cars you need to turn on the ingnition key to do that and that can kill your battery or even hurt your cars ingnition systems including the computer. Please consult a pro. But with right set up it is better than a dolly or trailer keep up rving and be safe .I d like your videos

Izzy, This tow-bar is fantastic. I been using my Ready Brute for 12 years and been absolutely trouble free! My aluminum model has a 10,000 lbs capacity. Have the break-a-way feature and installed the brake indicator. Love the indicator it helped me show that I had a sag in the assembly, which had an affect on the surge brake mechanism. Removed the hitch drop and man the bar was really doing its job. Engaged quicker. The towed is a 1994 Suzuki Sidekick 4x4. Curb weight 2400 lbs. So works great with a light vehicle too. Why anybody that would buy a system with the robot in the towed, beats the hell out of me. Here is some thing else that you can do...I can put the towbar on the back of my Dodge Ram and the TB will function the same as if behind the RV. Don't need special hook up to the vehicle the is doing the pulling. Freak-en unreal. Notice with your Mustang: check your slack in your cable it looks a little lose.

Only if it's AWD or all wheel drive. If it's 2wd or FWD as long as the drive wheels (front wheels usually) are off the ground and not turning you are fine. But yes if it's CVT flat towing will burn up the transmission in a hurry.

I bought this unit from Amazon for $1300. Instead of the 8k rating there is a sticker stating 6k rating. That's bad. I called NSA and they told me the same tow bar being talked about in this video was downgraded from 8k to 6k because people were loading it up to the 8k and the unit failed. So, they had the initial 8k rating wrong. That said, I error on the side of caution as do many others and would not have loaded it up to 8k, but now I'm stuck with a tow bar that I can't load up to even 6k. I was advised to buy the Hercules. What a mess!

You failed to mention the "Base Plate". Our base plate for a '16 Focus was $575 plus labor. Our out the door price was $5200. Unless you do all the labor yourself you'd be hard pressed to keep it under $5k. I have the exact same system which I really like btw.

Are you disconnecting the driveshaft on that Mustang when flat towing? Simply putting the transmission in neutral will damage the transmission over time. I am considering flat towing my Crown Victoria but I am also looking into a driveshaft disconnect device. Or I will be unbolting the driveshaft at the rear axle and strapping it up out of the way.

Hello, I just found your review on the NSA tow bar system. We are in the process of buying a "new to us" Tiffin Class A. I'm reviewing my options of buying a tow dolly and towing my Prius or buying a different car to tow flat. The NSA system sure lowers the cost of towning flat. I'll call the local shop listed on NSA's website to find out what the process is. Are they still working well for you guys? Not sure if I want to buy a different car to tow or just a the dolly. I also watched your video on Liquid Springs. They sound great. I just have to decide which is better money spent, Liquid Springs or a new tow car, both about the same price. Thanks for the information. Hope Izzy is feeling doing better.

Both great systems. What is more important to you? How your motorhome drives or how you tow your car? For us the LS is by far the best upgrade we have done. Suggest you test drive a demo unit that may help you decide which route to take. Thanks for watching.

Question: your tow vehicle breaks loose and the emergency cable attached to the motorhome pulls the brake pedal on to activate the brakes. What happens when this cable breaks away from the motorhome, your towed vehicles brakes are now released and your towed vehicle is on its way. The brake buddy system and similar independent braking systems latch up when the emergency system is energized. Is there some sort of latching mechanism on the nsa system to keep the brake pedal depressed?

Ready brake is a good product, but running the braking cable under the hood to a point at the firewall that is in the correct location for tying onto the brake pedal is difficult on most vehicles. You have to make sure that you do not drill into a wiring harness, brake lines, Etc. And then you have to deal with not getting the insolation twisted around the drill bit. Then you have to make sure that the cable does not have extreme angles that would bind the cable from operate smoothly. Very time consuming

@@EndlessRVing , I found someone to install this on my Denali. But I'm concerned that the Yukon is too close to the back of the RV, and someone else even mentioned it on a picture I posted. The mechanic installing it said the mounts only bolt on one way in one place. Now, the bars were not locked in place so I might have had a few more inches to go, but the spread is definitely wider than what you're showing on the car in this video. I'm wondering if there was an accessory that attaches on to the mounts to lessen the spread of the tow bars.........

Just a heads up, I am finally nearing the completion of getting this system installed on my Yukon Denali. The reason it's taking so long is the person who was doing the installation was doing it on his off time along with other work he was doing, I needed the vehicle for half the weekends in the summer, and it turned into a nightmare to find a receptacle for the lighting cable on the Yukon end. Hopefully by the end of today or at the most by the end of the year, I'll have everything installed and ready for a test drive.
