It was the Queens Jubilee weekend here in the UK and with our engine fixed, it was time to head on our first 'longer' sail. We picked Polkeris in South Cornwall to head to due to the protection from the Easterly wind and quiet setting.
On the way, we were greeted by a pod of dolphins- we couldn't believe it! And despite a shackle holding the clew on the main sail coming off, with good friends, sea swims, fireworks and the peace that comes with waking up on anchor, it was an incredible trip.

About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.

Turn the engine off while in gear and the prop will not spin.( It doesn't have to be reverse, forward is just fine.) The reason it doesn't stop spinning when you put it in gear with the engine already stopped is that your gearbox uses hydraulic pressure developed by the engine turning in order to actually engage gear, so if the engine isn't running you can't engage gear. Just watch out when you go to start the engine next time - put the lever in neutral first so as the engine begins to start neutral will be engaged and you won't find yourself steaming over your anchor chain, other boats whatever... You two make a great team, good luck in your new adventures.

That makes a lot of sense- we always thought it was a mechanical gearbox (due to the age of the boat) but i guess because the engine is new, it has a hydraulic one instead. Will try that. Thanks Robin!

@@TeuluTribe DON'T stop a Hydraulic gearbox in gear some makes can jam in gear and you can't get them back to Neutral. Find the instructions for the gearbox and read them first. Plus the fact that the hydraulics operate the clutches in the gearbox so need hydraulic pressure to keep the clutch engaged.

To stop the flapping you can rig up two preventers for your mainsail and mizzen. They can be a line running from a winch to a stanchion base or a pad eye and to the leeward side of the boom. The sheet then is pulled on against this line so the boom stops banging. It’s just mimicking the wind pressure on the sail, You can buy expensive purpose built preventers too. I wouldn’t but look the. Up and learn what they do.

Hi guys glad to see you have found the magic that is the joy of to stop button for the engine. Every sailor I know is just the same. Guess that makes you real sailors now. As for your prop not stopping when you engage gear with the engine off it will very much depend on the gearbox you have. Some gearboxes like the TMP1200 are hydraulically operated and rely on oil pressure generated from the input drive of the engine to allow the gear selector to work. You need to find out what make and model of gearbox you have and then someone may be able to advise you. It may be that you need to fit a shaft beak if you want to stop the prop spinning while sailing. I see you have put your main sheet the right way but if you are having problems getting the sheet into the jammer then you should be able to adjust the angle of the jammer. there should be a pin through the block that allows you to alter it.

Hi John! That would make sense- looking at the manual, i think we could either have TM-93 or TM-345 which would make it hydraulic. Whats a shaft beak? 😊 will adjust the angle of the jammer- thanks for the advice!

Just a peace of advice, I bring this up because you haven't posted a video of it and feel it's very important lesson for you guys to practice. And that is "MOB" man overboard. Both of you need to practice being able to turn the boat around at the most inconvenient time ( all by yourself ) and learn an automatic response to the situation, tossing a life ring, pressing the MOB button on your charter plot or GPS if you have one, and keeping an eye on the person who fell overboard, plus practicing getting that person back onboard if they are hurt - many times people have been smacked in the head and knocked overboard when coming about and the boom bounces back. You can practice by one of you tossing a life ring overboard without telling the other and then you have to retrieve the ring all by yourself. Until you feel confident you can do that you should always be tethered, but really you should be tethered anytime you leave the cockpit. Just my 2 cents worth. Be safe and have fun.

You need to add a preventor line on the boom when sailing downwind. This Dixie’s the boom so it can’t move. Also stope an accidental jibe😊

The cleat on your mainsheet can be adjusted in two ways. The first is the angle of the cleat, which can be altered by removing a pin, rotating the cleat bracket and reinstalling the pin. The second involves removing the bracket that the cleat is on and flipping it so that the cleat is either on the top or the bottom. There are normally 3 screws or bolts that need to be remove from the centre of the block to allow that to happen. I'd suggest trying the cleat on top if the mainsheet keeps uncleating, although glad to see that the mainsheet is now the right way round! Also, when sailing dead downwind, use a preventer for the main and mizzen to stop them slapping, and if possible, pole out the genoa. You will go faster as well!

Really appreacite you showing some of the realities of a first long sail, as not everything goes to plan, and it shows the difference with experience as your friends catch up with nearly 2 hours difference between you haha! I really do like your boat a lot! The layout is pretty nice. Looking back on this video now I bet you could have gotten far better speeds, with what you know now. I was also surprised to see how heavy your boat was, at 22,000 lbs I figured you would be somewhere in the 15-18 tops! (the one i am looking at is 40,000 hahah so I have a feeling light winds will be... interesting)

Those drone shots really show the space you have availiable between the main and mizzen masts. A mizzen staysail, or even a fisherman (really a schooner's sail), would fill the gap nicely, and provide light airs drive. A hidden benefit of having more sail up in light airs is the reduction in rolling and slatting of the sails. Back in the day I've seen cruising boats rigged with double mainsheets, one to each side of the boat, so they can be tensioned against each other, as well as the boom- stops the endless slamming. Don't trust shackles, especially snap shackles, and other similar patented gizmos too much. Take a look at what the Vendee/ORMA boats use- lots of lashings, dog-bones etc. Stronger, easier to make yourself, and oh so much cheaper! Snap shackles will shake themselves open in any sort of breeze. Never use one to climb the mast on- use knots! Looked like a lovely trip. Wait til you disturb a snoozing basking shark, you'll scare the c^^^ out of each other!

We would love more sails! The bank account wouldn't love us if we bought them now but definitely in the future! Double mainsheets sound a really smart idea. We will definitely rig up a preventer next time- we kind of did at one point (just end of boom to a stanchion) but will take it to a cleat next time. Thanks so much for the advice!

Good Nz morning folks. I'm loving your channel. Your enthusiasm is infectious. I love how excited you get, with each new discovery. Dolphins never cease to amaze. No matter how many times, each time still gives you a buzz. However, the biggest buzz you can have, I think, is when a whale surfaces. In fact it surfaced twice pretty close to us. Prop spins because it had inertia from being in gear, then once in neutral it has freedom of movement continues to carry the momentum of spinning from being in gear, if you turned off in gear (never a good idea in case it could be started in gear by mistake) it would stop straight away

Loving the videos guys, keep up the great work. I used to live in Weymouth down the coast from you and spent a lot of time on the water fishing. I have a little suggestion for you. Grab yourself a few diving lures with the treble hooks on, and get something to hold your rod so you can leave it, if that's what you choose, let enough line out, and set the drag accordingly. If you go over reef, be a good chance of a sea bass, they have even caught tuna over last few years around your area 😉. Anyhow tight lines and look forward to your next adventure.

Mainsheet can be fixed by pulling the pin in the cam cleat pivot and rotating the bracket down some and putting the pin back in.

Thanks for taking us along on your sail - always lovely to see dolphins :-)! Have a look at your propshaft there may be some way to lock it and stop the prop from spinning whilst you're sailing sometimes there's a device on it, if you don't have a folding prop though it will generate more drag than letting it spin (but less noisy :-)!). Well done saving the bee :-)!

Noted the Volvo logo on the controls. Suggest they consult the manual for a recommendation as to whether the prop should spin and how the gear lever is to be set. If you need to hold the prop still a simple rolling hitch will do the job.

We think the gearbox is a Technodrive either TM-93 or TM-345 so think its not stopping because its Hydraulic! However, will look into the rolling hitch- thanks!

Have you considered using feathers or a squid jig for fishing when bobbing along at a sedate pace? If you're unsure how to use either any half decent tackle dealer would be happy to explain this to you. It's dead simple. Have fun the pair of you. David.

That ship is the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern! It is a German Navy frigate

Just been looking up exactly that same thing.... Interesting fact: That frigate helped a lady they had rescued (they saved 700 migrants in the Med back in 2017) give birth to her baby son, on board, back in 2017. What it's doing in UK waters we know not! :)

when people ask why did you buy a boat you can show them this vid, just dont mention the 10 other vids where you have your head upside down in the bilge :) - also as a pro tip, if you ever want to jump in the water, put out a long line (50m) behind the boat, its called a jesus line and can save your life if the current ends up being too strong when you get in.

We don't have either of those sails but would love to buy them one day! Upgrading our batteries soon but going lead acid again due to the price. The windlass works- we just need to upgrade our batteries so Zach pulls it in by hand haha 💛

That was awesome reversing down the creek! No propwalk? The only boats i have seen that can do that have twin canted rudders. How do you do it?

Zack and Becka, I finished watching all of your yacht videos, to date. The block and tackle between your main boom and traveler should be arranged back to the positioning that it was in when you bought the boat. As Zack has noticed, it is difficult to un-cleat the line for letting out the boom. This is because the angle needed to do so would require the line to be pulled from above the traveler at an angle steep enough to pull the line out of the cleats. Since your pulling position is not at the correct angle above the traveler, the cleat end needs to be next to the boom. The cleat for the mizzen is next to the mizzen traveler instead of the mast, because you are at the correct angle to free the line from it. I hope that you understand that long explanation, it was difficult for me to keep up..Ha.. The point is, the cleat end of the block for the main should be attached to the main; the cleat end of the mizzen should be attached to the the traveler; simply said. Cheers and Have Fun. That does make sense- thanks James 😊 We need to add a longer main sheet if we put it back how it was because on a run, the end of line is all the way at the end of the boom meaning we can't cleat it at all!

@@TeuluTribe Then if that is the case, is the cleat angle adjustable. If it is, then you might try leaving the cleated block next to the traveler, but drop the cleat until the angle is perpendicular to the deck; or perhaps lower, if possible. This may take some trial and error, until you can find a sweet spot where you can easily lock the line in and/or release it. Keep me informed. It's great to see a young couple so ambitious. Yeah just subscribed. You’re doing what I’d love to do but realistically couldn’t afford it in my time. I had this dream in the early 1980’s. No internet or KZfaq then, and no way to financially support it. Boats are expensive…. But I’ve sailed a lot of the Chesapeake bay and lower Potomac here in the USA I’m enjoying your videos as well as similarly themed KZfaq channels.

You should be able to adjust the angle of the main sheet jaws to prevent it coming undone

You typically will not see male bees. The one you saw was a female worker bee. Boy bees only live to be fed by the female workers, and to find queens for mating. They die when after mating or when the girls decide they don't want to feed them anymore. Males are pretty much only around in spring/summer/early fall.

Nice little trip there and bonus to see dolphins. Now you have the jammer on the traveller track you would probably find it easier to adjust if you remove the jammer part and turn it over so the cams are on top. It should be removable and you can also adjust the angle to best suit you. When you put engine in reverse did you depress the button? If so then you were still in neutral. If not then I’m not at all sure why the prop would still turn and that would indicate the engine is turning over as well which is highly unlikely. Do you have a whisker pole you could use to pole out the genoa when going down wind as that will help a lot and you should also rig up a preventer on the mainsail if the sea is a bit sloppy. A line from the end of the boom to a cleat on the bow usually works well. Good luck for the next trip. Andy UK

I suspect that I was responsible for pointing out the mainsheet issue, what you now have replicates the mizzen. Perhaps look at sheet jammers to lock off the main sheet. Superb photography!!

Oh cool, will look into that- thanks Andy! We didn't press the button in when going into forwards- we think its spinning because we have a hydraulic gearbox maybe. We need to get a whisker pole- its on the list and would ensure Zachs arm doesn't ache 🤣 will rig up a preventer next time, thanks! 😊

Love you sailing channel I have just binged all your videos I love your honesty in showing the reality of the sailing lifestyle. One day I hope to join you in my own boat once I get out of this "normal life". looking forwards to seeing what's in store for you guys. Have you ever considered further down the road to convert your engine to electric? if you are able to get sufficient solar/wind to supply your needs

Thanks so much! Glad you enjoy the vids- you 1000% should get out the 'normal life' and go for it- its hard work but so, so rewarding. We have thought about it but there are a lot of things we need to do before then, but maybe one day!

Putting your prop in gear only works if you have a mechanical gearbox, if you have an hydraulic box, it'll spin.

If you were really sailing down wind you should had the boom MUCH farther out than what I saw -when in doubt, let it out

Hi guys. Is it a saildrive you have, or gearbox and shaft (most likely I guess)? Any idea on the gearbox model? Strange the prop doesn't stop spinning in reverse, but the advice on correct action under sail differs by gearbox and manufacturer....also presume it's a fixed prop, not folding/feathering?

Its a gearbox and shaft- i think maybe Technodrive (hydraullic)- but thats just a guess from looking at the manual as there is also a bit about mechanical gearboxes so i am not sure! Will research more! The prop is fixed 😊

Yep... If you have to haul a lot of chain as well and your physically unable for some reason. Look up synching the anchor . Basically a length of rope a hook on the one end you can Hook or tie to the anchor chain ...then run it back to a power winch at the back of the boat.. you can hall in that length of chain using the winch...you will have to stow the chain for each synch haul but it will allow You to lift a heavy anchor and chain if you cannot risk it hand over hand.

i have not seen a hot water bottle in 45 years ,when i left the U.K. and its awful weather. I suggest you figure out how to sail to the Bahamas and you will never go back.
