After 6 months the movie that everyone hated but hadn't seen is finally here. I think the Joker was the most talked about movie of 2019, but we're gonna let them have this.

I gave this a 3/5 on Letterboxd. It's a bit heavy handed and 'on the nose' with some jokes and comments. A lot of characters are pretty shallow but I think it's more just to amp up how 1 dimensional we see people we disagree with sometimes (or it could just be bad execution) but again, Betty Gilpin kicking ass is great. If you've seen it, let me know what you think!

At least with The Hunt, it was left intact when it was put in theaters last month. Unlike the TV series version of the movie Heathers, an ill-advised, ill-conceived rehash of the movie in 10 parts. Delayed by the Parkland shootings, then the Pittsburgh synagogue shootings, the final episode involving a mass shooting was not broadcast in the United States.

To be fair, any film that deals with humans hunting humans should make you think about if it’s so different to humans hunting non-human animals. It’s all okay or it’s all wrong, no? Humans can just communicate their feelings on being hunted far better than non-human animals can, but those feelings will still be consistent.

Yes there are people who have rough lives so rough that all they have know is pain, and just being blaze about it doesn't make it less true. There are people who never actually experienced real love and connection. It's fucking baffling how a lot of you are stuck ao far your own bubble that you couldn't even imagine someone who actually has it fucking rough in life due to things they can't control that can't laugh about people making jokes about their experience. Laughter is not the best medicine to everyone, I acknowledge that a lot of people feel that way but that doesn't mean you have to discount the experience and differences in others. Honestly THIS is the biggest issue we face, everyone so in their own bubble they don't even take the time to ask WHY PEOPLE MIGHT BE MORE UPTIGHT instead of assuming you know or making them feel les just because they can much harder share in what you find funny, which is also culture.

Idk, from everything I've heard the "satire" of this movie seems extremely surface level. Like, it doesn't take a genius to say "people sure are divided, huh?" It's like the most stereotypical "enlightened centrist" way of getting the point across too.

It's not criticizing extremism, it's criticizing uninformed extremism. The satire is definitely not that deep, but it isn't focused on delivering a deep message. It's meant to be more of a cherry on top, the main fun is in how they execute a deliberately absurd premise.

That was my take when I watched it. It was very hard to suss out exactly what the movie was trying to say because there was so much going on and it was very inconsistent. It also seems to call out certain types of people for things that they aren't typically known for, and you could say that these moments were meant to be humorous juxtapositions, but they aren't executed clearly enough for the viewer to be sure if it's meant to be taken seriously or not. As far as political satire goes, I'd give it a D. Some alright jokes here and there, but the messaging was extremely muddled.

Not knowing whether or not Don was really working for Athena, not knowing if those were really jokes on the text thread and not knowing whether or not that was the correct Crystal all made for a more thought provoking experience. @Munt Conkey centrists just means you have both sides bad ideas, not that you see both sides bad ideas. The idea that the best place to be is in the center is dumb as shit especially when some of the most "divisive" arguments have to do with giving people all of their human rights and the other side saying no we shouldn't. There's no "meeting in the middle" when it comes to those topics. We didn't "meet in the middle" when it came to slavery, one side was absolutely wrong.

@Phoenix Funny So, you’re saying that it’s perfectly okay to call out your opponents but not yourselves? One side (your side) must always be exempt because they can do no wrong? You understand that’s how the left has gotten so powerful and brazen, right? Their own side refused to tell them to stop descending into lunacy because they saw the act of pointing out flaws in their own logic as somehow “shilling for their opponents,” or “not taking sides and pussing out as a centrist.” Pointing out issues and flaws on both sides doesn’t necessarily make you a centrist; it makes you an egalitarian realist who wants to actually work to change society for the better rather than a tribalist who lives off of identity politics.

@@gobalbucs wow dude, you got to stretch properly before you reach that far. I'm all for calling out my side. I do it plenty. I'm also smart enough to understand there's a difference between Politicians and the people. Democratic and Republican Politicians are the "two sides of the same coin" because they're Politicians FIRST. I have no allegiance to Democrats or White-Liberals (like the ones in Get Out). But them being crazy and corrupt doesn't change what i believe in. I'd argue that Liberals are more likely to call out their own than right-wingers, Me Too was a big testament to that as well as other things. Wrong is wrong, not just when the other team does it. That being said I stand by my original comment because centrist are still up their own ass when they think being in the middle somehow gives them a 3rd eye and they're not just taking the bad ideas from both sides. Plus, in my experience, when someone says they're moderates or Centrist, they're really just Republicans that don't want to say they're Republican

I've been curious to see this movie because the ads I've seen about it didn't really give all that much away. I actually am glad to now know that it satirizes more than just the high society vs. others angle because the whole rich vs. everyone else thing has been done before. I enjoy satire the most when it points the finger at more than just one group, so I think this movie is right up my alley and if anything I want to see it more than I did before from going off the ads alone. :D

I think the movie didn't have a wider message other than both sides suck. It may have made one or two good points but overall the movie was pretty sloppy and way too invested in how the political divide looks on twitter rather than what it can actually look like on the ground

Just finished watching the movie and it's was a fun movie overall as long as you are not expecting any ground breaking commentary from it. Betty Gilpin was great but the rest of the characters were all pretty one dimensional and most are not even on screen long enough for you to care about. Loved what they did with their best looking actors.

My friend and I got into the argument about this movie before it was cancelled last year. He didn't want to see it because it was humans hunting humans. Never mind that he enjoyed watching predators/xenomorphs/whatever hunting humans. Remove the mask to reveal a human hunting humans, it's suddenly because unacceptable. An interesting reaction.

Satire is needed now more than ever. A modern Mark Twain would be fantastic! But, in lieu of him I'll take what I can get. We live in an extremely polarized and divisive political climate; watching something that takes the piss out of extremism, group think, and those willing to behave violently in the name of political ideology, is fine with me. Maybe this film will be viewed as a warning of the depths to which people will sink when they're so utterly convinced of their moral superiority.

Ryan H Except Mark Twain was no “centrist”. He was very far to what was the equivalent of the extreme left of his time. He mocked religion, he pointed out the crimes of US imperialism, etc. If he was brought back today, like Noam Chomsky, he would be considered so extreme that he would never get even the chance to be heard in the US main stream media.
@HarryPairatestes363
@HarryPairatestes363 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaeldebellis4202 My point regarding Mark Twain had more to do with his role as a satirist generally, and our need for satirists today, as opposed to what he was satirizing and where he stood politically. Further, his criticisms of "US imperialism" and left leaning disposition would hardly result in his being silenced in modern America. Noam Chomsky has made a career doing just that, and is certainly not being denied a platform. And mocking religion in the western world-specifically Christianity-is about as mainstream as you can possibly get.

You're review was pretty spot on, I loved it, I thought it made fun of both sides, if some one was mad their being petty, what I think is so funny is that if they would have gotten the right girl everything would have worked so at the end it's really about someone that had no tie to the left or right of this dispute got put into the middle and kicked ass! Love this movie.

I was more disturbed by Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Gone With the Wind than I was by this film. The most disturbing thing about a movie is when the people making a movie appear to believe that something evil is actually acceptable or good. This film did not have that in any way that I can remember.

I think the Hunt makes a good point to liberals and makes them question their believes in a good way. However, we have to understand that not only liberal are watching the movie, the extreme right (I’m specifically talking about people who act on their belief, hurting other by oppressing minorities, being aggressive and even assaulting someone physically because of their inherent differences) could use this movie and the hypocrisy of the characters in it to justify their actions. In the end the movie just helps to create a bigger divide between people in a society that already has too much of it. So I don’t think the pros outweigh the cons.
