Awesome vid. One nitpick though at 7:44: Satoshi did not "pre-mine" 1 million coins. He mined them when the software was out and accessible to anyone. So while he was the first miner and one of the few miners in the early days of Bitcoin, that doesn't fit the definition of "pre-mine" (which means the coins exist at genesis).

Exactly. His mining was essential for the software to operate.... Miners validate transactions - without miners there is no way to validate Bitcoin transactions. In early days, Satoshi and the handful of other miners didn't mine to acquire Bitcoin, they mined so the software ran.

@TCherice

YES. This was glaringly obvious to me, even as someone who doesn’t know a damn thing about cryptocurrency or how it even works. Money has to be backed by something. That’s essentially what gives it its value, right? (Please correct if I’m wrong in my explanation.) Bitcoin needs to be ascribed some sort of value. How can it have value if nothing is backing it? Can someone explain this to me? To me, it seems like a no brainer that his personal stash was not so much of a personal stash but, rather, the reserve. Having that untouchable reserve is what gives bitcoins their value, right? Also, can someone explain to me further what mechanism gives bitcoin its value at all? Our real money is back by gold. What backs bitcoin? What gives it its value? This whole thing is entirely lost on me so I’m just trying to keep up. Also, is bitcoin backed by the US dollar or, rather, any dollar at all? For example: bitcoin is worth any given amount in US dollars - US dollars are worth any given amount in gold. Is that how that goes? Or, is this an entirely different concept?
@yegorgribenuke6853
@yegorgribenuke6853 4 жыл бұрын
I dont know about Bitcoin, but US dollars are backed up by its military forces. I think Bitcoin is worth anything in the first place because banks saw this safe system and decided to support them by giving people opportunity to cash in and out. This is speculation, keep that in mind.

i just realized he doesnt necessarily have to be of british decent, rather european in general, because here (im german based) moost kids start learning english age 9 or 10.the british english standard (BES) is what is taught not just in GER but other countries as well. (which makes sense because of proximity) In addition his writing style is very formal, formated according to apa or mla, which are the two common formatting possibilities taught in universities in germany and most likely other european counrties as well. also, if we know which apa or mla version he used it would be possible to determin when he acquired those skillsand thus make it easier to determine his age. I dont know if other countries in europe have preferred usage of either system,but at the two german universities I studied at they preferred MLA for BES over apa .... idk justpopped into my mind while watching

I like the history. I've always had a few theories. 1) Why mine 1 million? Why not have a round number like 20 million BTC? We assume he set it to 21 million without knowing why. He could have planned to mine and dump a large amount to verify everything worked without having to start over. 2) Did he only mine 1 million? Who's to say he didn't mine with another rig, seeing as he went out of the way to maintain his privacy? The "loss" of 1 million BTC raises the value of the remaining BTC we don't know he has. 3) Patience. He had the foresight and inclination to hide his identity and was pushing for encryption. Who's to say he's not waiting for the devs to write in anonymity before accessing any BTC that could be tied to him? It has been found that some privacy features can be added to BTC with a "simple" soft fork. The only thing better than being a billionaire is being a billionaire in secret. 4) You wrote off the idea of Satoshi hiding for his safety pretty quickly. He may not face legal troubles (although enabling the skirting of sanctions is something I have no doubt US would attempt to prosecute just to send a message), but think of the possible shift of power all crypto currencies offer, and think of those who would love to punish someone who potentially took their power away.

From everything that has been covered thus far, I see a lot of behavior reflecting a person who is highly moral and maybe fairly neurotic as well. My guess is that he may have started bitcoin with very good intentions and a goal to protect against abuse of power. When bitcoin began to be utilized by criminals, that may have generated shame, anxiety, and guilt. Nakamoto may have perceived his bitcoins as blood money and abandoned it for that reason.

Anna Banana no. Initially he mined the bitcoins with the plan of earning from his work. But after the criminal element came in the money was contaminated and he couldn’t touch it. It became blood money

Why wouldn't he sell off his bitcoin though knowing that the price would drop if he did so, and only continue to rise if he didn't? He's helping the criminals right now by not selling, assuming he still has access to the keys.
