He wanted to return home... he already won a ring before wanting out of San Antonio, so he isn't ring chasing like Paul George is. He never wanted to go to Toronto in the first place, but was professional about it and got another ring and Finals MVP out of it.

_It’s embarrassing if you see from the perspective of a Clippers fan, but from the perspectives of Kawhi and Paul George it’s really not embarrassing because they both got to play in their hometown at the pro level plus Kawhi already had rings from the Spurs and Raptors prior to this stint._

Embiid is not nearly as injury prone as Kawhi. PG will be asked to be the third option with Maxey instead of the second next to kawhi and the east is way weaker and easier than the west.
